Fr. Kirks Message July 12, 2020 It’s been about a year since I arrived at St. Thomas Aquinas to take up my new assignment as your pastor. I find myself this week reflecting on the past year and thinking about the future. Last September Bishop Barron came to preside at my Mass of Installation, and two weeks later the St. Thomas community gathered for a pot-luck luncheon to welcome me. I was both humbled and grateful for the warm welcome you all gave me. In October we celebrated Halloween with a family friendly event that included ‘trunk-or-treating’ in the safety of our parking lot and food, fun and games in the Aquinas Center. In November we were joined by the entire student body and staff of Villanova Preparatory School to celebrate the Feast of All Saints, and we remembered our faithful departed with a time-honored celebration of the Feast of All Souls. December brought the Advent and Christmas seasons, and in January we again pooled our resources to celebrate a community meal to officially mark the end or our 100-year anniversary as a par-ish. In February both our kids and catechists traveled to Anaheim for the Religious Education Congress, and Villanova Prep again joined us for a combined liturgy, this time for our celebration of Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the holy season of Lent. Lenten soup suppers returned with enthusiastic participation from the community. We celebrated an evening Penance Service at the beginning of March, and preparations were well under way for both our annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner dance and the Parish Festival when the Covid 19 Virus took over our lives and our schedules. The church was closed for public worship and we here on the parish staff scrambled to implement live-streamed Masses as quickly as possible. We celebrated Holy Week and the Easter Triduum virtually. Even now with the church reopened to the public we are facing the daily challenge of operating within the constraints of protocols that are intended to keep everyone safe, but that many find are distracting us from our traditional way of worshiping. Through it all I have encoun-tered a wonderful sense of support and community from you all, and I have been made to feel welcome. To say it’s been an unusual year is certainly an understatement. For my part, I am so impressed at this community’s response to the recent adversity we’ve all experienced that I can’t help but feel excited to think about what we will be able to accomplish together when the temporary limitations we’re experienc-ing now begin to lift! God’s peace, Fr. Kirk

GOD’S WORD FOR CHILDERN

Prayer for Doctors and Nurses

O merciful Father, who have wonderfully

fashioned man in your own image, and have made his body to be a temple of the Holy

Spirit, sanctify, we pray you, our doctors and nurses and all those whom you have called to study and practice the arts of healing the sick

and the prevention of disease and pain. Strengthen them in body and soul, and bless

their work, that they may give comfort to those for whose salvation your Son became Man,

lived on this earth, healed the sick, and suffered and died on the Cross. Amen.
