A Message from Father Andrie

St. Therese, pray for us!

Doing Something New
When I was younger, my father, brother and I took a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. This was before
the birth of GPS, so I was in charge of the paper map. I sat in the back seat announcing the approximate distance for
each city. In my mind, I was “preparing the way” for my father as he drove the car.
California Highway 1 is the major state highway that runs along the Pacific coastline. We took this route be-
cause of the scenic mountain and ocean views. Unfortunately, it is a winding road and gave me carsickness. Part way into the trip, I
pleaded, “Dad, I think you need to pull over. I’m going to throw up.” He didn’t make it in !me. …That poor map.
We are given the theme of a highway in today’s first reading from Baruch and our gospel from Luke. Baruch, Jeremiah’s
scribe, lived during what was probably the most disastrous !me in Israel’s history. The Babylonians swept through Jerusalem, de-
stroyed their Temple, and carried off the best and brightest Jewish people as slaves to Babylon. It was like September 11 !mes hun-
dred.
Their whole world was turned upside down. In their minds, God abandoned them. The promises He made to the patriarchs,
Moses, and David appeared broken forever. When all seemed lost, Baruch exclaims, “Up, Jerusalem! Stand upon the heights; look to
the east and see your children gathered from the east and the west at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that they are remembered by
God.”
“What’s that Baruch,” you say? “God will level the mountains and fill in the gorges as He brings His people home?” Baruch
announces a “glimmer of hope” by telling the Jewish people that God is going to “pave the way” or “build a highway” and lead His peo-
ple back home in joy. Baruch, then, reminds the people “Put your trust in God because He is about to do something new!”
Fast-forward roughly 500 years. While the Jewish people were not physically exiled as in Isaiah and Baruch’s day, they were in
spiritual exile because of widespread poli!cal and religious corrup!on. Like lost sheep, they were in need of consola!on and hope.
In this light, John enters the scene where we hear that he is in the Judean desert at the Jordan River. Providen!ally, this is
where God brought the Israelites into the Promised Land a'er wandering in the desert for 40 years. In other words, we have a new
exodus on our hands. Quo!ng Isaiah 40:3-5, John essen!ally proclaims, “Get ready! God is about to do something new!” Despite the
challenging !mes, John proclaims that they are about to see the salva!on of God.
As in Baruch and John’s day, we too, can become discouraged because of our distressing !mes. Even a cursory glance at the
news headlines can cause us to despair. There are plenty of headlines about depressing news in the world and disheartening corrup-
!on in the Church.
In light of such news, we may wonder, “Is God napping? Has He forgo#en us? Why does He allow such things to happen?
Why doesn’t He take ac!on?” Today’s beau!ful readings remind us that God has not forgo#en us and is ready to do something new.
With God, there is always newness! In short, be encouraged and stay close to Him!
As we move deeper into Advent, receive John’s message and open your hearts. Ask God to do something new in your life,
family, and in the Church. Maintain hope and ask for God’s help as you take ac!on to bring Christ to your families, school, work, and
our parish.
As we wait pa!ently for our baby King, may
today’s readings give you great encouragement that
while Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and
forever (Heb. 13:8), He is always doing something
new!
“Goldy, we’re lost!” “Don’t be silly. We’re fine!”
(Seriously Jesus, where are we? Lead us home, Lord!)

Our Parish Penance Service is Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7:00 pm. We will have seven visi!ng priests that will hear confessions
that evening.
Pope St. John Paul II once said in a homily, “Confession is an act of honesty and courage – an act of entrus!ng ourselves,
beyond sin, to the mercy of a loving and forgiving God.”
I some!mes call confession the Sacrament of Honesty. It is an encounter with Christ where we are honest with Him and
ourselves. And in doing so, we experience God’s forgiveness and love. If it has been awhile, do not be afraid. God is good
and wants to forgive you!

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I know that the teachers all enjoyed some down !me with family and friends
and came back ready to tackle these next weeks before Christmas.
One week we con!nued our work with our Community Helpers unit. We focused on their clothing. We talked about what specific
community helpers wear and why they wear what they do. We also talked about special clothes that we might wear at different
!mes. We worked on rhyming, number recogni!on, beginning sounds, and fine motor skills. We are also doing a lot of prac!cing for
our Christmas program coming up on December 18. Ms. Ca!e's Owls will visit Mr. Miller in the gymnasium and we will all visit Ms.
Lara in the music room.

A Prayerful, Magical Catholic Family Advent & Christmas
Advent can be a !me to build magical memories for your children, even without Christmas
par!es, decora!ons and lights because it has its own beau!ful symbols and tradi!ons. Here are
some ideas for how you can establish Catholic family tradi!ons and spiritual prac!ces related
to Advent and Christmas. Don’t feel like you need to do them all – at least not at first!
SHOP MORE MINDFULLY – Focus your gi' shopping on the people, not the things, and try not
to get caught up in the rush to make things “perfect.” Take !me to enjoy the season and savor
the prepara!ons. Put aside at least a small amount of your gi' spending for items to be
donated to the poor. Above all, try to see Advent as a special !me to prepare for Christmas, not
to celebrate it yet.
ADVENT WREATH – Purchase or make a simple evergreen wreath and
four candles, tradi!onally three purple and one pink (lit on the third
week) or, you can use four white or four purple candles. Decorate the
wreath with purple and blue ribbons or small ornaments. Stars are
especially good. Place it in the middle of your table. Beginning on the
Saturday night before the First Sunday of Advent, dim the lights and light
the first purple candle, using the prayer found below. Then, light that
candle every evening at dinner!me, adding another candle each Saturday night un!l all four
are lit. Be sure to eat by candlelight. Your children will love this because it makes Advent meals
special. Older children can take turns ligh!ng the candles. Pray around the wreath each night
for the needs of your family, neighborhood and the world before blessing your food.
JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM – Some!me in the early weeks of December, set up your family
Na!vity scene, but start with just the empty stable with the empty
manger in it. Put the figures of Mary, Joseph and the donkey on the
other side of the room, and move them closer to the stable each
evening, having them “arrive” just before Christmas Eve. Children
can take turns moving the figures. If you use real straw in your
stable, you can have each child add a s!ck of straw every day as
well. (some families have them add straw for every good deed they
do.) On Christmas Eve, as the sun goes down, add the baby Jesus
figure to the manger, then the angels and shepherds. Be sure not
to add the Three Kings just yet – they are s!ll on their way!
LIGHT THE ADVENT WREATH In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit …
Come Lord Jesus, be our light! Grant us eyes to recognize you as we wait and watch for you in
the world around us.
PRAY Lord, you call us to be watchful because we do not know what tomorrow may bring.
We pray that we may be ready to answer your call without delay and help one another along
the way. Amen.

Tree projects! This is delivery week for everything we collected and packaged.

On Saturday, October 27, 28 women made a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our

dedicated to Our Lady

her appearance on the

enjoyed a wonderful

Shrine's origin through a guided tour. With prayer and fellowship, we encoun-
