MARCH 10 20191ST SUNDAY OF LENT

v No we did not host an ice sculpture contest for Catholic Schools Week

On the evening of January 30 an emergency call came in from our firesprinkler system The fire department and police department responded Fortunately there was no fire but a busted sprinkler water line Tracey one of our custodians was on the scene within a couple of minutes and shut down the water mains in the church basement

The sprinkler pipe fitting that burst was in the ceiling in the north vestibule to the commons area This vestibule is outside of the main part of the building and exposed to the north winds and cold temps We do have a heater in the ceiling but with a solid ceiling not enough heat made it into the ceiling and to the pipes Damage although seemingly significant at first turned out to be relatively minor Water was contained to the carpets north of the baptismal font in the commons and a small 3rsquo or so patch in the church

The carpet in the vestibule was soaked and significant water poured over the steps and onto the sidewalk to the north The water in the carpets was extracted by machines and we had air movers on them within 2 hours of the incident In the basement water continually fell from the insulation-wrapped duct work The duct work is perforated every so many feet allowing water to drain out The insulation is a glass-based anti-microbial treated insulation so everything was designed to dry out without issue Our custodial staff Eric Tracey amp Joe worked extremely hard in -25deg to -15deg temps removing several inches of ice from the doors to the street to be ready for Saturday Mass Kudos to those three

v It is official Our Area Catholic Community (ACC) consists of St Maryrsquos Osakis amp Belle River Bishop Kettler released a letter this past week which was linked in our email blast this past Thursday (To sign up for our email blasts simply contact the parish office or visit our website)

Fr Steve Rita Winters Mary Jane Reif and I along with Fr David Petron and 3 representatives each from Osakis and Belle River will make up our ACC Area Planning Council Over the next 9 months we will be meeting getting to know one another gathering information and working together to ultimately create an implementation plan that is specific to our ACC Pretty much no other details are known at this point I guess that will be our job to work through

I am looking forward to collaborating and working together to better serve as disciples in our lakes area communities and beyond

With gratitude Todd Wentworth

JESUS IS TEMPTED IN THE DESERTThe story of Jesus being tempted in the desert is familiar to Christians because it is read from the pulpit every year on the First Sunday of Lent Jesus leaves the crowds to go into the desert to fast from food and to pray for forty days At the end of this period Jesus is tempted by the devil to use his power for self-gratification and personal gain

Most folks will tell you it takes practice to say no to temptation Consider Adam and Eve when they lived in paradise They never had to practice saying no because they had everything they wanted The first time they were tempted they failed the test

In this reading we find Jesus in the desert tempted three times by the devil He was physically weak hungry and thirsty and still he did not give in to temptation He said no not out of some superhuman power but from good old-fashioned willpower Since Jesus is fully human we can presume this was not his first encounter with temptation Jesus had spent a lifetime building up his willpower by saying no to the easy way out no to having fun at the expense of others no to putting his needs or wants first

How can we practice saying no to temptation One way is by flexing the muscle of self-denial Self-denial or what we used to call ldquogiving stuff uprdquo has been a part of Christian discipleship since Jesus walked with the first apostles ldquoGo sell your possessions and give the money to the poorrdquo (Matthew 1921) Lent may be the traditional time to practice self-denial but it doesnrsquot have to be the only time You can practice saying no to your sweet tooth or the urge to buy one more thing on eBay You can choose to drink water as your only beverage for a few days You can even skip a couple of meals one day to experience what it feels like to go to bed hungry

By practicing self-denial once in a while we learn self-discipline an important virtue for Christians Often learning how to say no to small temptations can be very helpful when we find ourselves facing larger ones

Decide as a household on something you can give up for the next week candy soda potato chips Have water at meals or try fasting between lunch and dinner Take the money you save and give it to the poor

Giving up potato chips or chocolate can take a great amount of willpower Giving up complaining about your boss work or mother-in-law can take even more Who or what is your favorite topic of complaint Write it down and then see if you can get through the next two weeks without mentioning it to anyone else Bringing Home the Gospel Parent Reflections on the Sunday Gospels bull Copyright copy 2007 2018 Judith Dunlap Published by the Pastoral Center PastoralCentercom All rights reserved Scripture passages have been taken from the New Revised Standard Version Bible copyright copy1989 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA and used by permission All rights reserved

HE WILL NEVER LET YOU FALL

Have you ever participated in various trust exercises where you have to place your faith in others around you Maybe it was falling backwards with your eyes closed while the personrsquos voice speaking to you seemed to drift further away Maybe it was jumping from a height into peoplersquos arms that didnrsquot seem strong enough to catch you These activities were supposed to show you the meaning of trust and help grow that trust in you for your comrades Sometimes it worked Other times some prankster would actually let you fall and then you learned to trust no one So much for building up our ability to trust

Trust is important especially in our relationship with Jesus He calls us all the time and asks for us to trust However because of doubt or a desire to follow our own will we choose to disregard his request After objecting to Jesusrsquo request to lower his net into the water Peter was humbled when he caught so many fish that the net began to tear Peter was a fisherman by trade Surely he knew what the catch was probably going to be that day But Jesus asked him to follow his will Peter wanted to follow his own Peter realized that his trust from then on should be in the Lord

Do you sometimes think your generosity will bear little fruit Do you wonder if your surrender to God in stewardship living really amounts to much at all Trust in Jesus the one who calls you to this life His word is truth and he would never let you fall
