    Dear Parishioners,

Pope Francis has instituted this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time as the Sunday of the Word of God. Pope Francis invites all Catholics to make the Scriptures part of their everyday lives. In his apostolic Letter “Aperuit Illis”, he said that “The Bible cannot be just the heritage of some, much less a collection of books for the benefit of a privileged few. It belongs above all to those called to hear its message and to recognize themselves in its words... The Bible is the book of the Lord’s people, who, in listening to it, move from dispersion and division towards unity. The word of God unites believers and makes them one people.” Pope Francis continues to say that “without the Lord who opens our minds, it is impossible to understand the Scriptures in depth. Yet the contrary is equally true: without the Scriptures, the events of the mission of Jesus and of his Church in this world would remain incomprehensible. Hence, Saint Jerome could rightly claim: “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.”

The Letter to the Hebrews says “Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern the reflections and thoughts of the heart,” (4:12) Therefore for the word of God to be “living and effective” it needs to be read at home and integrated into our life as it is not as a human word but as it is the Word of God.

But how is the Word of God to become “living and effective” in our homes, in our families, in our professional and social relationships? Begin to break open God’s Word in your home by dedicating some family time each week for a brief reading of a Scripture passage, perhaps the Sunday Gospel. Given the hectic and stressed pace of life and our typically overworked schedules, making family time for the Bible reminds us of the need to put God first. Take the advantage that this pandemic has imposed on us to stay at our homes and acknowledge that as you gather around the table of God’s Word, it will enrich and strengthen the experience of the family as a “domestic Church.”

Choose a comfortable and quiet place in the home, away from the distractions of television and ringing telephones. Begin by praying to the Holy Spirit asking for his guidance, then read the passage aloud, and then allow some time for the family to reflect on and share its meaning together. Try to respond to this question as you share your thoughts: What this passage of the Scripture is telling your life here and now?

This time dedicated to reading puts your family into living communication with God. Remind everyone gathered that this family activity brings them to a living encounter with Christ, who is present as the Word among them. Finally, conclude by saying together a thanksgiving prayer or the Our Father. In Jesus and Mary,

    Queridos Feligreses,

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION OF UNBORN BABIES 2021 "A nation which murders its children is a nation without a future." Pope St. John Paul II The St. Stephen Parish Respect Life Ministry is once again sponsoring its Spiritual Adoption Program. Taking part in the program is easy, and all parishioners are invited to join us in this rewarding and worthwhile campaign. All that is required is to pledge to pray daily for 9 months for a child who is in danger of abortion. While the "spiritually adopted child" may remain unknown to us, he / she is known to God. Adoptive parents are encouraged to name their child to make their daily prayers more personal. Interested parishioners can register online via our Parish website http://www.ststephendp.org beginning now through Sunday 1/31/21. All registrants will take the Oath of Spiritual Adoption during any of the Masses on the weekend of January 30 at 5:00pm or January 31 at 9:00am, 12:00 noon and 5:00pm. Registrants who cannot come in person to attend any of these Masses can take their Oath if they attend the livestreaming of the 9:00am or 12:00 noon Mass. The daily prayer for the spiritually adoptive children shall continue for 9 months ending on the weekend of October 23-24, 2021.
