Pentecost

Come Holy Spirit!

“And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” – John 20:22-23

This weekend the church celebrates the great feast of Pentecost. We celebrate this feast fi y days a er Easter, hence the name. We read the account in the Acts of the Apostles of how the Holy Spirit came to rest on the disciples and empowered them to go forth and spread the Good News. We read of tongues of fire res ng upon the disciples, there being a noise like a strong wind, and people hearing their words in their na ve tongues.

In today’s Gospel from St. John, Jesus says that He would send an advocate, or paraclete, to watch and guide His disciples. This became a reality for them and remains with us to this day. It is the gi of the Holy Spirit. Some refer to this day as the birthday of the Church. Some churches celebrate by having bap sms and confirma ons on this day. Parishes might release doves or pigeons symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Many parishioners dress in red in unity with the fire of the Spirit.

Through the Holy Spirit the apostles were empowered and had the spiritual tools to go out to all na ons proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that Peter bap zed 3000 people that day. This tradi on con nues 2000 years later. Despite the many challenges and hardships Chris ans have faced over the centuries, the Church con nues to grow. Through their bap sm, all Chris ans are called by Christ to proclaim Jesus Christ as savior and invite

others into a rela onship with Him.

In our diocese, our mission and vision is to Courageously Live the Gospel. Our radio sta on, Spirit FM, encourages you to Live with Spirit. It’s not always easy, but if we open our heart to allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in all we say and do, those fears will turn to courageous boldness. Have the courage to open your heart to the Holy Spirit today.

Make An Impact Tax-Free You’ve worked hard and saved diligently—re rement is your chance to enjoy it. Many people also use their re rement years to give back. One easy way is to make a gi to St. Scholas ca Catholic Church or The Annual Pastoral Appeal directly from an IRA, saving you income tax on the money and allowing you to see the difference you’re making today.

In past years, maybe you made a gi to St. Scholas ca Catholic Church or The Annual Pastoral Appeal from the distribu on you’ve received from your IRA. At the me, you paid income tax on the distribu on and then took a charitable deduc on when you itemized your taxes the following year.

A Simpler Way To Support St. Scholas ca Catholic Church or The Annual Pastoral Appeal If you’re 70 1⁄2 or older, you can use the IRA charitable rollover (some mes called the qualified charitable distribu on or QCD) to make a tax-free gi to St. Scholas ca Catholic Church or The Annual Pastoral Appeal from your IRA. You can transfer any amount up to $100,000 directly to St. Scholas ca Catholic Church or The Annual Pastoral Appeal without paying income tax on the distribu on. An added bonus: You’ll have the sa sfac on of seeing your gi in ac on during your life me.

Not 70 1⁄2 Yet? You can s ll support our mission with your IRA. Simply name St. Scholas ca Catholic Church or The Annual Pastoral Appeal as a beneficiary of your account, and we’ll receive the funds, or the por on you designate, a er your life me. All it takes is comple ng a simple change-of-beneficiary form. Contact the administrator of your re rement plan for yours or download one from your provider’s website.

The months of May and June are when the Knights of Columbus and the Parish Culture of Life Ministry conduct their Baby Bo le Drive to help support the Pregnancy and Family Life Center of Citrus County. During this Pandemic, the Pregnancy and Family Life Center has con nued to provide food, clothing and diapers, in addi on to other services to needy families in Citrus County. With the Covid variants, recent increase in Covid infec ons and the fact that many parishioners are s ll worshiping at home, the Knights of Columbus and the Parish Culture of Life Ministry is asking for dona ons to be sent in by mail again this year, rather than the tradi onal distribu on of baby bo les for collec ons. Remember the Pregnancy and Family Life Center exists solely on dona ons and grants and last year with your generous support we were able to donate $4,506.

Please take a minute and mail your contribu on to:

Choose one of the following ac vi es as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings: • Gather as a family this week to celebrate Pentecost.

• Some mes we need help and guidance to live as Jesus taught us. For your family prayer this week, pray for the gi and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Use this prayer: Come Holy Spirit! Fill our hearts with the power of your love.

• Talk about each of the gi s of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence and wonder and awe in God's presence. How do you see these gi s at work in your family?

It’s that me of year! Time to register your children in grades K - 8 for the 2021-2022 Year of Faith Forma on.

This past year due to COVID 19 families have been doing Faith Forma on at home. For 2021-2022 we will offer the following two choices for Faith Forma on:

Online: Each week the children will view the Weekly Faith Forma on Video on YouTube, complete the Pflaum Gospel Weekly Lessons and Online Assessments at home.

In-Person: The young people will be grouped into four Faith Forma on Levels according to their grades in school. In their group, they will complete the Pflaum Gospel Weekly Lesson with their catechist.

With either track, we invite parents to par cipate as much as possible. There are many benefits to par cipa ng in your child’s faith forma on, such as enriching your own faith and allowing your children to see that knowledge of faith ma ers is important to you. If children see their parents engaged in faith ma ers they will be more engaged with their faith. We ENCOURAGE all faith forma on families to a end weekly Mass together. Within the celebra on of the Eucharist, we find the source of our faith and can make sense of what we learn in faith forma on programs. The Mass is the perfect prayer where we pray together as a community of faith.

When you register your children, you will select the track you would to par cipate in. We are expec ng the COVID situa on to improve as we move through the summer and do not expect to make any changes to this plan. The program fees are $40 for the first child, $70 for two children, and $90 for three or more children. You can pay online, mail, or drop off a check at the parish office. Registra on is online. Just click the link on our website: www.stscholas ca.org, type this link into your browser: h ps://forms.gle/hinzJkyzzt22D9T28, call or email the office, and have the link sent to you. (kbrasseur@stscholas ca.org)

Prepara on for the Sacraments of First Reconcilia on/First Holy Communion (2nd graders or older) and Confirma on (8th graders) are separate programs outside of regular Faith Forma on. For a child to begin prepara on for one of these Sacraments they must have completed at least the year of Faith Forma on before beginning Sacrament Prepara on. Informa on for Sacrament Prepara on will come out in the early fall.

FEAST OF FAITH Liturgy: Work of the Spirit The Spirit of God who hovered over the waters at the dawn of crea on—the Holy Spirit who descended upon the disciples at Pentecost in ever-changing forms in the sound of a mighty wind or tongues of flame—hovers also over our celebra on of the liturgy, giving it life, making it real. It is the Spirit of God who draws us, gathering us together, Sunday a er Sunday. It is the Spirit of God who called loudly to the inspired writers of the scriptures and who con nues to whisper to us, revealing ever-new facets of God’s word, gran ng insight just when we need it. It is by the Spirit’s power that, when Christ’s words are u ered by the priest, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. And it is surely the Spirit who inspires us—that is, breathes in us—when, sent forth from the assembly, we seek ways to serve our brothers and sisters, to allow the gospel to come to life in the world. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.—Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
