Brothers and sisters, on the last three Sundays that remain in the 2019 liturgical year, we will hear how Jesus is reaching Jerusalem on his journey to give his life for us all. His final death on the cross will be on the feast of Christ the King, on the last Sunday of November. As part of his journey to the cross, today Jesus speaks about the resurrec on of the just, the innocent, those who do the will of God. Jesus enters into a controversy with the Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrec on of the dead. The constant problem of life is death. The life of man remains ambiguous, unless man finds an answer to death. Jesus himself will face his Passion with the confidence that his Father will not abandon him in the tomb. God will raise him up on the third day. We celebrate this death and resurrec on every Sunday as we celebrate the Mass. We celebrate that God does not abandon us in our sins, but forgives us and gives us new life in Christ. This new life in Christ may give us the key for eternal life where death has no more power over us. The first reading speaks about the resurrec on of the just to emphasize the words of Jesus in the gospel. The reign of An ochus Epiphanes brought a systema c persecu on of the Jewish faith. Greek culture threatened the faith of the Jews. Seven brothers with their mother remain faithful to the laws of God and are ready to die before breaking God’s law. This en re family makes a profession of faith in front of their execu oners saying, “You are depriving us of this present life, but the king of the world will raise us up to live forever.” They proclaim the resurrec on of the just in the midst of their sufferings and death. Both the second book of Maccabees and the book of Daniel show the community’s belief in the resurrec on of the just in the midst of persecu on. These readings intend to give us hope and faith so that we may not fear struggles, persecu ons, or death for the sake of our faith. The words of the en re family and the words of Jesus point us to the resurrec on because we o en fear death. We not only will face our physical death one day, but we may also face the death of our spirit every me we do not want to suffer for our faith. For this reason, we need the strength and courage that comes from the Holy Spirit to stand firm with our faith when wicked people and cultures try to erase the law of God from us. If we are truly faithful to the laws of God, then, sooner or later, some people will try to make us abandon our faith so that we may follow their ways, which may not be in accord with the will of God.

Ever wonder what happens to the “recyclables” that don’t make the cut at the Shady Grove Recycling Center? The answer is that they are loaded into steel waste containers and delivered by railroad to the Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility. Every day, 1,800 tons of solid waste is incinerated there by the Covanta Energy Company to provide electric power for Montgomery County’s use. The system is remarkable to behold. The St. Rose Eco-Ac on Team is offering a firsthand witness to the process in all its fiery wonder - don’t miss it! To join the carpool, contact Pat Cuff, [email protected]
