Chinese New Year Celebration

On Sunday, February 11, 2018 our Parish will celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is a way of appreciating and sharing the beauty of different cultures. The event will start with the 12 noon multi-language Mass in the Basilica of Regina Pacis. The Holy Mass will end with the veneration of the ancestors according to the Chinese Catholic tradition. It is an opportunity to pray for the souls of all the departed, including those who are not Chinese. The celebration will continue in the Pre-K Gym with an entertainment program and refreshments. All are invited.

El día Domingo, 11 de Febrero del 2018, nuestra Parroquia estará celebrando el Año Nuevo Chino. Es una manera de apreciar y compartir la belleza de las diferentes culturas. Este evento iniciará con una Misa en varios idiomas a las 12:00 PM en La Basílica de Regina Pacis. La Santa Misa terminará con una oración de los Ancestros de acuerdo a La Tradición Católica China. Es una oportunidad para orar por las almas de todos los difuntos, incluyendo a aquellos que no son de descendencia China. La celebración continuará en El Gimnasio con un programa de entretenimiento y refrigerio. ¡Todos están invitados! Domenica 11 febbraio 2018, la nostra parrocchia celebra il capodanno cinese. A conclusione della Santa Messa ci sara’ il rito della preghiera per gli antenati, secondo la tradizione cattolica cinese. E’ una opportunita’ per pregare per tutte le anime dei defunti, anche quelle di coloro che non sono cinesi. La celebrazione continuera’ nel Pre-K Gym con un programma di intrattenimento e un rinfresco. Tutti sono invitati.

The ritual honoring of ancestors by Chinese Catholics was officially permitted by Pope Pius XII in 1939. This ritual is expressively Catholic and should not be confused with the practices of Buddhism or other Asian folk religions. The essential part of the Ancestral Veneration Ritual is the presentation of incense, flowers, wine and fruits followed by three bows of the head before a tablet engraved in honor of the ancestors. Incense represents prayers. In offering incense, our Chinese Catholics pray that their prayers and wishes for their ancestors rise like incense all the way to heaven, where they hope their ancestors are enjoying the heavenly bliss.

Flowers express love. Although the ancestors and their descendants are separated like heaven is separated from earth, our Chinese Catholics’ affection for their ancestors has not been interrupted. They express their love through flowers and they hope that their ancestors are pleased with them. Fruits signify achievements. Our Chinese Catholics recall their ancestors’ merits in cultivating and educating later generations; they cherish the memory of their ancestors in their material and spiritual contribution to humanity’s cultures and traditions; and they praise their ancestors’ achievements in virtues, words and deeds. Wine symbolizes life. Just as Jesus turns wine into His Blood and we use wine at a banquet to wish people good health, our Chinese Catholics present wine to their ancestors to wish them eternal life in heaven.

午十二点举行。在弥撒即将结束之前，中国教友以自己的传统文化

习俗敬拜天主及自己的祖先，同时也是一个机会为已故的灵魂祈

祷，也包括各种肤色，种族，语言的灵魂。 新年联欢会在圣堂隔

壁幼稚园的体育室内举行，有不同文化的饮食，也有丰富多彩的节

From the Pastor’s Desk…

LENT is right around the corner. Are you ready?

On February 14th (Ash Wednesday) we begin the holy season of Lent. It is a time of serious reflection, prayer, fasting, charity, and sacrifice. Contrary to popular belief it is a time of JOY not sadness, because we are getting ready for the great feast of Easter. We do our “penances” with joy because we know that they are changing us and making us better Christians. Traditionally, people would “give up something” in Lent as a sacrifice. However, the things which were often given up did nothing to make us stronger in our commitment to Christ. No chocolate, no ice cream, no drinking, etc. were all “NO THINGS”. Along with these there need to be “YES THINGS”. Here are some suggestions of what things reflect the true meaning and practice of Lent:

• PRAY MORE—You don’t have to be in church to pray. The Our Father or Hail Mary can be recited in the car, in the subway, while walking, etc. But committing yourself to praying these prayers EACH DAY will give you even a few minutes of time with your mind on God.

• CONFESSION– we have 40 days in Lent. A priest can hear a confession anywhere, in any place, at any time. How long can you really go on without asking for God’s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance or asking for His help with sins that are difficult to conquer. Confession is not for saints. It is for people who are struggling. Jesus said: “...those who say they have no sin are liars”.

• MEDITATION—this is simply the act of putting yourself in a quiet place and being quiet. Sooner or later the Holy Spirit will help you to see God’s presence in your life. We have a beautiful opportunity for quiet meditation every FRIDAY from 9am to 7pm in St. Joseph Chapel. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar and people visit to pray in silence. It is beautiful and peaceful. Why not commit yourself to a 15 minute visit every Friday in Lent.

• ACTS OF CHARITY AND KINDNESS—We have 40 days. Commit yourself to perform 40 acts of charity, i.e., 40 phone calls to people you know could use some friendship; write a letter to some soldiers on the battlefield (we will mail them for you); write a supportive letter to a seminary student offering him prayers (we will mail them); have your children do these with you so they can learn.

• THE CROSS—Do you have a crucifix in your house? If not, buy a simple one and put it where it can be seen easily. (A crucifix is a plain cross with the figure of the body of Christ affixed to it.) In Lent we reflect on Christ’s suffering for our salvation.

• HELP THE POOR—learn about them. Go to Catholic Relief Services online and see where the Catholic Church is working. Donate to them. Pray for them. Sacrifice for them. Get personally involved. St. Francis said “...it is in giving that WE receive”. The powerful oceans are made up of many single rain drops.

We will continue to talk about Lent in the coming weeks. We really want it to mean something for each of you and your children. Let us know what you are doing. Your ideas can be helpful and encouraging to others. Msgr. Ronald T. Marino

The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed each day at 11:30 AM for adoration and prayer. Monday through Thursday at 7:30 PM guest speakers will share reflections.

Friday evening at 7:30 PM a special Mass will be celebrated to close the 40 Hours Devotion. We encourage all our Parish groups and each individual to set aside some time during this

special Lenten devotion with the Blessed Sacrament to pray for vocations. Sign-up sheets will be available to reserve your time.

The Holy Father speaks… Nowadays listening is becoming more and more difficult, immersed as we are in a society full of noise, overstimulated and bombarded by information. The outer noise that sometimes prevails in our cities and our neighborhoods is often accompanied by our interior dispersion and confusion. This prevents us from pausing and enjoying the taste of contemplation, reflecting serenely on the events of our lives, going about our work with confidence in God’s loving plan, and making a fruitful discernment.

What can I do as a

Parishioner to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life?

Offer friendship to priests and religious.

Whether it be sharing a meal, taking a walk, or simply having a conversation after mass, make an effort to share friendship with priests and religious. Healthy friendships will foster awareness, communication and respect for the lifestyle and needs of each person. Feelings of happiness and satisfaction will be the sure result!

Come Home And Experience God's Love For You Again

Wednesday, February 14th is Ash Wednesday -- the beginning of the

Holy Season of Lent. Upper Basilica Mass in English will be at 7:30am and 8:30am. Mass in Spanish will be at 7:30pm. Blessed ashes will be imposed during Masses following the Gospel and will continue throughout the day until 7:00pm. Our Priests will be available to hear confessions all day until 9:00pm.

VOCATION RETREAT WITH BISHOP DIMARZIO

In this Year of Vocation, young men are invited to encounter Jesus Christ on the diocese’s

annual Vocation Retreat with Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. The weekend retreat will be held at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, March 2-4.

It is open to men who are high school seniors and older. Attendees will meet with and hear inspiring talks from Bishop DiMarzio and several seminarians,

have an opportunity to reflect on their own vocations and spend time with God. Also part of the three-day program: Mass, communal and private prayer, eucharistic adoration,

interaction with the seminarians and presentations designed to help participants discern whether God may be calling them to the priesthood.

Beatitudes: Jesus’ Vision for Our Lives The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1–10) offer meaning and direction for all of us; they articulate the vision of Jesus Christ. Through the Beatitudes, Jesus calls us to be peace-loving, merciful, clean of heart, and meek. By living the Beatitudes, we learn what it takes to be truly happy and live the values of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Beatitudes turn the values of the world upside down. The world sets up the rich to be first; Jesus puts the poor on top of the world. The world tells us to seek happiness at all costs; Jesus saw happiness in mourning. The world values power over others; Jesus praised the meek. The world encourages self-fulfillment; Jesus told us to work for justice. The world says that the merciless succeed; Jesus proclaimed blessed the merciful. The world announces, Go for the gold! Jesus taught us to keep our hearts pure. The world honors the winners of wars; Jesus celebrated the peacemakers. The world sees the persecuted as losers; Jesus declared them the winners. What are some ways that we can develop the Beatitudes in our own lives? First, we can rest assured that the Holy Spirit is already at work within us, drawing us toward God and inspiring our desire to be a Beatitudes-type of person. Second, pay attention to the people you know who model a particular beatitude. Think of ways you can live these qualities in your own life. Finally, talk with God in prayer. Ask him to help you develop the Beatitudes in your mind, heart, and actions.
