My Dear Parishioners

I could not have been more pleased with the way we opened our church for public worship this past weekend I am truly blessed to carry on my ministry here with such a dedicated staff Doug Cadarette has been diligent in sanitizing the church and designating the seating so that we can safely socially distant Terry Renaud and Teri Rawson were throughout front and center taking care of the multitude of details required for instance printing the personal participation pamphlets (PPP) setting up the downstairs hall and providing for the Mass being televised there All in case we needed it for the over flow We are in good shape here at St Rochrsquos

We are also slowly creating the ldquonew normalrdquo We would be fooling ourselves considering all that we have been through that our way of life after Covid-19 would be identical to life before this pandemic What are the choices that we will have to make What have we become aware of in our lives that perhaps before we took for granted Or perhaps be-cause of the pace of life we never gave much thought to before

In talking to people and of course the number of people Irsquove had a chance to share conversation with has been limited talk about a deeper awareness of their relationships with family friends parishioners and neighbors but also significantly their relationship with God There is I feel a new awareness of our radical dependence on God ldquoFor it is in being uncertain and not in control that we find true faithrdquo If we have true faith then we simply want to do the will of God It is simple and there is beauty and genius in simplicity but simple and easy are not the same

This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost the powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Mary and the Apostles It was after the coming of the Holy Spirit that they understood clearly what direction their lives needed to take With the help of the indwelling Spirit they were able to make the right decisions I know that many have developed a deeper prayer life during the quarantine This gives us the ability to hear God speaking to me personally and become aware of His will for me and how he sets the new goals for my life a singleness of purpose

This singleness of purpose will help save you from wasting your life in shallow and superficial activity that means almost nothing to anyone When you have singleness of purpose everything else is embraced or discarded according to whether or not it moves you in the direction of your goal If you have this singleness of purpose decision making becomes much easier We can ask ourselves ldquoWhat is Godrsquos will for this momentrdquo

I suggest as we go about creating the new normal we make use of scripture One of my favorite passages from the Bible affirms my belief that the will of God is not as much of a mystery as we make it out to be It comes from the book of Micah ldquoYou have been told what is good and what Yahweh wants of you Only this that you live justly love tenderly and walk humbly with your Godrdquo (Micah 68)

Could this passage and the Holy Spirit be our guide in creating he ldquonew normalrdquo

Let us continue to pray for and love one another

Holy Spirit Memory

The Holy Spirit reminds us he reminds us of all that Jesus said He is the living memory of the Church and when he reminds us he helps us understand the words of the Lord

This remembrance in the Spirit and by virtue of the Spirit is an essential aspect of Christrsquos presence within us and within his Church The Spirit of truth and charity reminds us of all that Christ said and helps us enter ever more fully into the meaning of his words We all have this experience one moment in any situation there is an idea and then another connects with a passage from Scripture It is the Spirit who leads us to take this path the path of the living memory of the Church And he asks us for a response the more generous our re-sponse the more Jesusrsquo words become life within us becoming attitudes choices actions testimony In essence the Spirit reminds us of the commandment of love and calls us to live it

A Christian without memory is not a true Christian but only halfway there a man or woman a prisoner of the moment who doesnrsquot know how to treasure his or her history doesnrsquot know how to read it and live it as salvation history With the help of the Holy Spirit however we are able to interpret interior inspirations and life events in light of Jesusrsquo words And thus within us grows the knowledge of memory knowledge of the heart which is a gift of the Spirit May the Holy Spirit rekindle the Christian memory within all of us And there that day with the apostles was Our Lady of Memory who from the beginning meditated on all those things in her heart Mary our Mother was there May she help us on this path of memory mdashExcerpted from Walking with Jesus A Way Forward for the Church by Pope Francis

The Church of Saint Roch Oxford MA PENTECOST SUNDAY May 31 2020

Fr Roy

PENTECOST SUNDAY

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful

And kindle in them the fire of your love

Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created

And you will renew the face of the earth

Lord

by the light of the Holy Spirit

you have taught the hearts of your faithful

In the same Spirit

help us to relish what is right

and always rejoice in your consolation

We ask this through Christ our Lord

Amen
