St. Vincent de Paul Donations Dear Parishioners, As you might think, donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society have been down quite a bit since Mass-es were suspended because of the virus. Our availa-ble funds are pretty low. Fortunately, we have not had a large volume of requests lately. However, we expect that to change if the utility companies start disconnecting service due to overdue accounts. With many people out of work we expect our requests will increase soon. The St. Louis Council oversees 144 Conferences like ours and has sent us a number of vouchers for food from Schnucks to distribute to our Neighbors in Need as we call them. However, we expect to get a large volume of requests for help with rent and utili-ties. If you would like to help you can send a check made out to St. Richard to the parish office and attach a note that it is for SVDP. These can be mailed in or dropped off in the black box which is located on the wall to the left of the main entrance to the Parish Life Center. As always, thanks for your support of our Neighbors in Need.

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, or Corpus Christi. As Catholics, we know that the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian Life. When we attend Mass and proceed toward the front of the church to receive communion, we should be deliberate in our under-standing that this is the Body and Blood of Christ that we are receiving. This year’s observance of Corpus Christi is unique, in that we are reminded of this amaz-ing gift that we as a Church have been given as Christ, and that we should never take it for granted. This spring we had almost ten weeks where we weren't able to gather together in person for Mass and to receive the sacrament, and so this point is fresh in our hearts. Speaking of the Body of Christ in a different way, I wanted to share two pieces of exciting news with you all regarding us as the Body of Christ, the Church. You may have seen in the news earlier this week that Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of our Arch-bishop here in St. Louis, Archbishop Carlson. We are very thankful for Archbishop Carlson’s eleven years shepherding our Archdiocese, and his fifty years as a priest! I am also very grateful for Archbishop Carlson’s great support of ministering to the Deaf com-munity, and his decision last year to restart Catholic Deaf Ministry (CDM) here in the Archdiocese. Our new Archbishop-elect is Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski, who is currently the Bishop of Springfield, MA, and a native of Baltimore, MD. Welcome Archbishop-elect Rozanski! Please see the Archdiocesan website for more information. The other bit of good news is that at the beginning of last week, Archbishop Carlson appointed me as Pastor of St. Richard Parish. As you know, I’ve been here at St. Richard as the Parochial Administrator for the past year, and now I’m very excited and humbled by Arch-bishop Carlson appointing me to this role. I will also still remain Director of Catholic Deaf Ministry for the Archdiocese. The Installation Mass for me here at St. Richard will take place this summer, and I’ll share more information with you all later. Thank you for welcoming me this past year into the parish family here at St. Richard, and I’m looking forward to being your shepherd for years to come. St. Richard, pray for us! Fr. Kavanagh

“The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the Body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf”. 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 The unifying motif of this year’s readings for today is God’s gift of living, life-giving Bread. Prefigured in the manna, which not only nourished individuals but defined Israel as a community under God’s spe-cial care, Jesus, the living bread, bestows on us—individually and as a community—eternal life that, in John’s perspective, begins here and is fulfilled hereafter. This “already/not yet” theme is alluded to by the Communion invitation’s reference to Revela-tion’s vision of the kingdom-feast: “Happy are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9) once slain who lives forev-er. For St. Paul, the eucharistic bread and cup are both signs of what the community is called to be and source of the community’s strength to live that ideal. As we partake of this gift, we become one with Christ in reality. But there is more. We also be-come one with each other. As we all partake of the mystery, we are united in flesh and spirit—in the Holy Spirit—with each other as well. As Paul says, “Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf”. (1 Corinthians 10:17). Today we celebrate this won-derful gift. Even though we do not fully understand it, we believe and accept it with joy. We are one with Christ and one with each other. We too be-come the Body of Christ in the world.
