A letter from our Pastor...

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” (Luke 4:42-43)

As we emerge from the pandemic, we give thanks for the many ways that the Lord has sustained us, and we pray that the Lord will bring consolation and healing to those who have suffered loss. We hear many saying that they want things to return to normal; to put things back the way they were. But Jesus was always on the move, and so we are always called to move forward. We may want to hold on to the way things have always been, but the Spirit is always calling us to look beyond ourselves, and to see new opportunities to share the love of God and to expand the communion of the People of God.

As we now hope to put the pandemic behind us, we look forward to the challenges of Renew My Church. In one way, Renew My Church in our archdiocese is certainly a response to declining mass attendance, and declining numbers of vocations to priesthood. But it is, above all, a call to live the vision of the Second Vatican Council: “The Church, embracing sinners in her bosom, is at the same time holy and always in need of being purified, and incessantly pursues the path of repentance and renewal.” At St. Raymond, we want to embrace the path of renewal, not simply resign ourselves to decline.

We can no longer sit back and be confident that the faith will be handed on from generation to generation simply through family inheritance. Younger generations are now challenged in ways that are different from previous generations. They are challenged by scandals of abuse of power and division in Church leadership, by science offering increasing insight into the way the world works, by social media changing the way we relate to one another. They must choose to be Catholic Christians amid those challenges. They must see the light of the gospel in a convincing way, by coming into relationship with people in community, who show them that knowing Jesus truly gives deeper meaning to life.

Pope Francis has been calling us to embrace our identity as missionary disciples of Jesus. He is reminding us that the Second Vatican Council affirmed that the Church is missionary by nature, since we share in the image of God who is Trinity; a communion of persons constantly going out of themselves in love. Mission is not something that some select people in the Church do; mission is who we are as People of God, sent out to be the Body of Christ in the world.

Discipleship means following Jesus; literally “walking behind” him, adopting a way of life and a way of

looking at the world formed by the revelation that is centered in the Sacred Scriptures. Discipleship means

making a choice to orient our life around our relationship with Jesus and to live by his power. Missionary

discipleship means being a disciple who invites others to come to know and to share in the wisdom and

peace that the Christian life offers us. Missionary disciples do not keep their faith private. They are

concerned to share with others, as a spiritual friend, how their participation in the community of the People of God makes their life meaningful. Missionary disciples do not simply serve in some ministry or function

within the parish, with those who are already there. Missionary disciples share hope by telling others about the way that God has guided them. They share love by accompanying others in bearing their burdens and

empowering others to seek new life.

...Continued

Pope Francis encourages us: “I dream of a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world, rather than for self-preservation.” Fruitful renewal will only take place as we allow the Lord to guide us through prayer. So let us unite as a community in prayer. For the next year, we will pray this prayer for renewal to conclude our intercessions each week.

Lord Jesus, you came into the world to bring new life.

Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us.

Enable us to imagine our future boldly, to discern your direction wisely,

to embrace the greater good generously, to remain united in the bond of peace,

so that we may hand on your gifts to future generations.

I encourage each of you to include St. Raymond parish and the renewal process in your daily prayers.

Peace Be With You,

Fr. Scott Hebden, Pastor

Join us this weekend to visit with Fr. Scott, Fr. Gilbert and Fr. Rodlin and other staff members. We look forward to visiting with you in the

open air in front of the church!

The RCIA -- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults -- is a process of companioning people as they come to greater faith. It is de-signed for men and women who:

● have never been baptized

● were baptized in another Christian denomination and are con-sidering becoming Catholic

● were baptized Catholic but have never received Eucharist or Confirmation

If you would like more information, or if you wish to join with others who are exploring the Catholic faith, please call or e-mail Deacon David Babczak (847-253-8600, [email protected]). Our meetings are held on Monday evenings beginning in mid-Seeptember. St. Raymond’s Parish is a wonderful faith community with a strong tradition of warmth, inclusiveness and outreach to those who are hurting. We find strength, love and support in this parish and we invite others who might be searching for a faith community to consider joining us.
