Please contact Teri Dwyer to register and plan to attend the class while awaiting the birth or adoption of your child. Sacrament of Matrimony: In accord with the regulations of the Archdiocese of Washington, couples must contact a priest and begin preparation at least six months prior to the wedding. Parish registration and active participation for the minimum of three months is required before preparation may begin. Living together before marriage is sinful and harmful to the future marriage. Couples who are living together will be asked to live separately during the preparation time. What does it mean to be an active Catholic? Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, have children baptized, or serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter stating they are parishioners and active, practicing Catholics. To receive such a letter, one must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to a stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. We encourage all parishioners to become active in one of the parish organizations. In a community as large as St. Raphael, one means of verifying participation is through the regular use of parish offertory envelopes. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish, or are unable to contribute at this time, please at least note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your continued participation, and you will not be noted as "inactive" on our parish roster. 1513 Dunster Road ♦ Rockville, Maryland 20854 JANUARY 6, 2019 Parish Office Hours Monday-Friday: 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Parish Phone 301-762-2143 Parish Fax 301-762-0719 Website www.straphaels.org Weekend Masses: Saturday: 5:00 PM Sunday: 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30AM, 1:00PM (español), 6:00PM (youth) Weekday Masses: Monday thru Friday: 6:30 and 9:00AM Saturday: 9:00 AM Penance: Tuesday: 7:00 - 7:30 PM and Saturday: 3:45 - 4:30 PM Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament: Tuesday: 6:45 PM Thursday: 9:30 AM Benediction: Tuesday, following novena 7:45 PM Thursday, 7:15PM Miraculous Medal Novena: Tuesday, 7:30PM Divine Mercy Chaplet: Tuesday, following Novena Thursday, 7:00PM St. Raphael in Gingerbread

Attention: High-schoolers, young and older adults alike this film is for you!

An exceptional film, The Sexual Revolution: 50 Years since Humanae Vitae will be shown in the church on January 17.

Arrive by 7:15 PM for the film to start at 7:30 PM. Father Tom Morrow, author and our Priest in Residence and Therese Rodriguez, R.N., Certified NFP Instructor will also be present to encourage dialogue. The new documentary, Sexual Revolution 50 Years Since Humanae Vitae, seeks to examine the effects of the free-love experiment of the last century set against the backdrop of Paul VI's groundbreaking encyclical, Humanae Vitae about love, sex, and marriage. Seven years in the making, this beautiful documentary closely examines the history of the parallel developments of the Pill and modern Natural Family Planning (NFP) by telling the little known story of the founding doctors – Dr. Gregory Goodwin Pincus and Drs. John & Evelyn Billings - all of whom were once colleagues. This inspiring and illuminating Documentary contains expert commentary by Archbishops

Charles J. Chaput (Philadelphia) and Anthony Fisher (Melbourne); Fr. Tad Pacholczyk and

Sr. Hannah, MC; and Drs. Peter Kreeft, Robert P. George, Helen Alvaré and Marguerite

Duane, MD plus many more; and Christopher West, Abby Johnson, Steven Mosher, to name

only a few.

“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good

government.” ~Thomas Jefferson

Did you know? January is Respect for Life Month? As a Faith Community, let us lift up in prayer every human being’s awesome responsibility to protect Life from conception to natural death. Pray to end abortions in your backyard! Sadly, Carhart is still practicing in this New Year. Join other concerned pro-lifers for the weekly prayer vigil every Monday morning from 9 to 11 AM. We pray to end late-term abortions performed by Leroy Carhart against innocent unborn life in Bethesda. Meet on the public sidewalk north of the Wildwood Shopping Center (in front of the Sun Trust Bank) on Old Georgetown Road. Visit www.prayfor bethesda.com for more information and parking instructions. Dick Retta (301-538-2500) and Missy Smith (202-288-4984) are the points of contact. Making sense of Bioethics: According to Father Tad Pacholczyk, author of a column called Making Sense of Bioethics that appears in diocesan newspapers across the country: “Bioethics is the study of the ethical concerns arising from advances in biology and medicine. Its task

involves distinguishing between morally appropriate and inappropriate uses of biotechnology and medicine.” There are ethicists in academia and the media who do not agree with his position on these issues. However, Catholic Bioethics is derived from the teaching of the Church. Hence it is very important that we as faithful Catholics understand these arguments so that we can live our lives according to the faith. Stay tuned to all notices that will appear under this column every week in January. They will provide a brief summary of the bioethical abortion-related arguments as found in the National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC). Sign-up for transportation to the March for Life: You can sign-up for this year’s Annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. by visiting the church’s website’s homepage for the sign-up genius link. Boarding the bus will occur immediately after the 9:00 AM Mass on Friday, January 18 and will depart the church promptly at 10:00 AM. Wear warm clothing, bring a water bottle, bag lunch and your $5.00 required fee for the driver’s tip. If you do not have access to a computer, call Sandy Shamburek at 240-864-2514 before 12 noon on January 17, 2019.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Home Blessing on Epiphany The feast of Epiphany is the traditional time for blessing your home. Please take a moment to find the “Blessing of the Home and Household on Epiphany” at www.usccb.org. Then, gather family members to pray this special Christmastime blessing on your loved ones and your home.

A Family Prayer for the New Year

God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that

you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another.

As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the

past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. (© Loyola Press; used with permission; all rights reserved)

Religious Education Classes Resume Today SRRE classes resume today. Our next break will be January 20-22, Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday week. Find the complete calendar at https://www.straphaels.org/religious-education (scroll down) or contact the SRRE office for a print version. The SRRE Parent Handbook is available on the sidebar at www.straphaels.org/religious-education.

Preparation for Sacraments The St. Raphael Religious Education (SRRE) office oversees and coordinates sacrament preparation for all children ages 7-18. This includes Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, and Eucharist. Please contact Mary Beaudoin for information.

If your child attends a Catholic school (other than SRS) and is in grade 2, 7 or 8, please complete the Catholic School Sacrament Registration form (Eucharist or Confirmation) and return it to the St. Raphael Religious Education office this week. Download the form from the Religious Education page of St. Raphael website or contact us to request a copy. Thanks!

First Reconciliation and First Eucharist First Reconciliation will be celebrated on Tuesday evening, January 22, and Saturday morning, January 26. Families can choose either time. Children in grades 3 and up are invited to Confession Practice on Sunday, January 6, for 20-30 minutes, between 11:00 a.m.-1:00 PM in Room 7. Confession practice will be offered during class for children in grade 2.

Families with children (grades 2, 3, and 4) are completing all of God's Gift Reconciliation. First Communion candidates in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 are completing all of Reconciliation: Pardon and Peace. Completed workbooks are due on the day of First Reconciliation. Be sure to memorize the Act of Contrition:

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen

Those who missed the Listening Rite are invited to download the rite from the Religious Education webpage, complete the rite at home, then come to the RE office to receive a special gift.

Confirmation Student Reminders Confirmation I students are working on their Confirmation Service Projects. The focus of these projects is the Corporal Works of Mercy (to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to shelter the homeless, to visit the sick, to visit the imprisoned, and to bury the dead) and the Spiritual Works of Mercy (to instruct the ignorant, to counsel the doubtful, to admonish sinners, to bear wrongs patiently, to forgive offences willingly, to comfort the afflicted, and to pray for the living and the dead).

Confirmation II students should have turned in their sponsor certificates, saint projects, and Confirmation service reflection papers. All students have participated or will be participating in a Confirmation retreat. We look forward to Confirmation Masses with Bishop Fisher on Saturday, May 4, or Saturday, May 11, 2019.

Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World

In his apostolic letter Gaudete et Exsultate (in English, Rejoice and Be Glad), Pope Francis reminds us that we are all called to become saints. This week: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The Gospel invites us to peer into the depths of our heart, to see where we find our security in life. Usually the rich feel secure in their wealth, and think that, if that wealth is threatened, the whole meaning of their earthly life can collapse. Jesus himself tells us this in the parable of the rich fool: he speaks of a man who was sure of himself, yet foolish, for it did not dawn on him that he might die that very day. (Luke 12:16-21) [#67]

Prayer Intention for January

Young People and the Example of Mary: That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Our children’s religion curriculum includes the following standard on Ecumenism: Understand and participate in the call of the Church to be a sign of unity in the world through knowledge of and collaboration with other Catholic (Eastern), Orthodox, and Christian churches. Every year the week of January 18-25 is set aside as a time to pray and work toward unity among all Christians. This is what Jesus prayed for at the Last Supper (John 17:20-24). It is also a time for us to learn about other Christians through dialogue and friendship.
