S W SAINT JOSEPH

HUSBAND OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY March 19

The story of the Israelites’ grumbling and threatened revolt, and of God’s response in our reading from Exodus today, grapples with difficulties of the life of faith. Those who place their lives in the hands of God, as Israel did by following Moses into the desert, may soon face troubling and fearful moments. Sometimes we lose what we think we need, or somehow find it difficult to get what we really need. In our busy lives, it’s easy to gradually forget God’s presence and action among us. Moses’ prayer to God and God’s compassionate response of providing water resolve the situation. Perhaps it was Moses’ admirable honesty in his dialogue with God that made a difference. Moses “cried out to the Lord” and he didn’t know how God might respond. Honestly expressing our needs in prayer is essential to the life of faith. Waiting in openness to God’s response is equally important. WATER FOR OTHERS. The story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman, like the passage from Exodus, speaks of tired and thirsty people. Jesus is tired and thirsty from his journey. The Samaritan woman is not only tired of the difficult chore of obtaining water, but is thirsty for something more. Jesus presents himself as living water for her, able to satisfy a deeper thirst in her heart. Through his patience and compassion, he opens a new wellspring of God’s sustenance for her. How might we, like Jesus, be water for others in our thirsty world? We can take some cues from Jesus here. Jesus crossed boundaries of gender, ethnicity, and religious division. Jesus began in vulnerability, in need of hospitality from a stranger. His was a non-threatening, compassionate presence. Jesus did not begin by speaking about himself or God, but entered into ordinary conversation with her. He first attended to her practical realities and concerns, which led to deeper dialogue. Perhaps we have opportunities to follow Jesus’ example. T ’ R : Ex 17:3–7; Ps 95:1–2, 6–7, 8–9; Rom 5:1–2, 5–8; Jn 4:5–42 [5-–15, 19b–26, 39a, 40–42] Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Be aware of poison dangers in the home

More than 90% of all poisonings happen in homes. Parents should know the top risks for children (especially children who still put things in their mouths!) and work to eradicate them. Lead poisoning is high on the list, especially for older homes with lead paint or dust. Button batteries are small and shiny and lurk in many toys and electronics that litter our homes. Swallowing these can be deadly for children. The same is true of household cleaners like laundry or dishwasher detergent pods. For more information, visit https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/safety-topics/other-poisons.

Joseph, someone once joked, was indeed the perfect husband: the only major character in Jesus’ story who never utters a word! But the Gospel recounts and the liturgy celebrates his silent witness of faith-filled deeds: “With a husband’s love he cherished Mary, the Virgin Mother of God; with

fatherly care he watched over Jesus” (Preface of Saint Joseph, Sacramentary). Catholic devotion, therefore, hails him as patron-protector of the universal Church. Some cultures set a festive “Saint Joseph’s Table,” welcoming the poor and strangers to feast with family and friends. Tradition keeps today as the anniversary of his death, which we presume was peaceful, with Jesus and Mary present. Thus, Catholics invoke Joseph as Patron of a Happy Death. Descended from David’s house, which God finished “building” through Joseph’s provision of a home for Mary and Jesus, he was, fittingly, a carpenter by trade; thus, patron of workers. Spring, nature’s rebirth, begins between his feast and Annunciation (March 25), appropriately, since Joseph’s silent obedience and Mary’s “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) usher in humanity’s spiritual rebirth. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S S

P D W . Let us show proper reverence for the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament by remembering to dress respectfully. Going to mass is a special occasion, not just any ordinary event. During the current situation with the Coronavirus outbreak, LA Archdiocese mandated the following rules to all parishes: Those who are ill are not obliged to attend Mass and should stay home to recover. The use of the cup for Holy Communion should be suspended. Holy Communion is only to be given in the species of the consecrated bread. It is recommended that the faithful receive Communion on the hand. The faithful should be encouraged to refrain from shaking hands at the “sign of peace” and to refrain from holding hands at “the Lord's Prayer.” Remove holy water from fonts not attached to a filtration system. We pray for the health & recovery of all who are ill and not with us today.

Thank you for your generous service in our Archdiocese. All priests, employees and volunteers are required to complete re-certification training in a Safe Environment program every four years. Please drop off a copy of your current certificate to the Office; if your certificate had expired, it is your obligation to find the soonest scheduled class to take it and comply with this utmost urgent matter. We are under very strict scrutiny to comply with the archdiocesan policies adopted under the Charter for the Protection of Minors established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and its annual compliance audit.

Classes are offered continually at various parishes on a rotating basis

(visit www.virtusonline.org).

Fr.
