Stuffed Cabbage Dinner at Hungarian Social Club March 19

th celebrating Freedom Day!

Elizabeth Sverha Zambo was born in 1899 in Hungary. For 55 years she lived in Ashford, Connecticut and served the community. Her desserts were sought after at St. Phillips Ladies Guild Bake Sales, but her homemade STUFFED CABBAGE was legendary. Elizabeth Zambo was the wife of a Joseph Zambo, who was a Connecticut state legislator in 1956 when the Hungarians revolted

against the former Soviet Union. He helped refugees settle in Ashford and crafted legislation to build Route 89 from Ashford to Willimantic. Mrs. Zambo was interviewed for the St. Phillip jubilee, and referred to Father William Dunn as "the People's Priest". Prior to moving to Ashford, Mrs. Zambo lived in New York. Her City experiences and culinary talents were different from many refugees settling in Ashford. A trained musician, she also played the piano for musical performances. By special permission of the Zambo-Makray family, this year, Elizabeth Zambo's mouth-watering STUFFED CABBAGE Recipe will be used. This famous Zambo Stuffed Cabbage recipe was thought to be lost by local residents because it had disappeared from community dinners held at St. Phillips, Ashford Seniors, and the Hungarian Social Club! According to her grandchildren, the secret is in the base and special blend of exquisite paprika and European spices known only to those who watched and learned directly from her how to prepare this authentic Hungarian cabbage, filled with rice, ground meats, and cooked in a special beef base tomato sauce. Because "Grandma Zambo" lived in Hungary her recipe is "direct from Europe" and considered a cultural treasure in Ashford. Due to labor involved and cost Stuffed Cabbage is only prepared once per year! DO NOT MISS OUT! This important fundraiser allows the Hungarian Social Club of Ashford to continue! Tickets include delicious Hungarian Pastries for dessert, vegetable, hearty bread, salad, and a generous appetizer table, coffee, tea, and byob setup. Enjoy Hungarian music while you dine and reconnect with old friends and neighbors. This year’s Special Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage will be the Best you have tasted in years! Please call Jim at 429-9576 to reserve your $20 ticket for this Only Once per Year Stuffed Cabbage event! Sunday March 19th starting at Noon at 314 Ashford Center Road (rt 44) at the Hungarian Social Club.

On Ash Wednesday we officially begin the season of Lent. This is a six-week period when the whole Church focuses on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. During these weeks we are invited to

think about what Jesus said and did, and to reflect on their meaning in our lives and our world today. We move together during Lent toward Holy Week, when Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead. The celebration of Easter Sunday and beyond, allows us to fully experience Jesus as our

Risen Savior. Let us together approach this Lenten Season with an

“Attitude of Gratitude” for the unconditional love of God that we receive every day. Let us acknowledge the amazing gift of

Jesus the Son who took on human form to be our example. Let us recognize all the “gifts” that come into our lives every day in very ordinary ways.

With gratitude and our eyes on Jesus, try to spend more time at prayer, more

time talking to God and listening to God.

With gratitude and our eyes on Jesus, try to be more aware of the needs of others,

and to share time, talents and resources with the poor, the hungry, and the homeless.

With gratitude and our eyes on Jesus,

try to grow stronger as people of faith by learning to say no to our weakness

and our failings, and by sometimes even saying no

to the things we enjoy.

With our eyes on Jesus, we journey through Lent trying to understand and accept what God has in store for us with a grateful heart.

A heart that is open to recognizing and accepting all the wonders of the universe as well as all that Jesus did for US in becoming our example.

For even as he died, Jesus gave himself over to whatever God wanted of him. We pray for all of you this Lenten Season.

That you may be able to give yourself over to God as Jesus did-knowing in faith That God will continue to fill your life with moments that fill your heart and life with gratitude.

God’s blessings and peace…Andrea, Liza, Marianne and Mary-Jo
