Presider The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Presider Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. First Reading: Isaiah 45:1-7

1Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him and the gates shall not be closed: 2“I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. 5I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, 6so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. 7I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the Lord do all these things.”

People Thanks be to God.

Psalm of the Day Psalm 96:1-9,10-13

Refrain: Ascribe to the Lord honor and power.

1 Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth.

2 Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; *proclaim the good news

of his salvation from day to day.

3 Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all

peoples.

4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; *he is more to

be feared than all gods.

5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the

Lord who made the heavens.

6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the

power and the splendor of his sanctuary!

Page 5: St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost ......2020/10/18  · St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II Sunday, October

7 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the

Lord honor and power.

8 Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; * bring offerings

and come into his courts.

9 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth

tremble before him.

10 Tell it out among the nations: “The Lord is King! * he has

made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge

the peoples with equity.”

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea

thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is

therein.

12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the

Lord when he comes, * when he comes to judge the earth.

13 He will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with

his truth.

Refrain: Ascribe to the Lord honor and power. The Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. 2We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly 3remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. 6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, 7so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.

Page 6: St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost ......2020/10/18  · St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II Sunday, October

8For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. 9For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. 16So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” 21They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Homily Deacon Corby Zeren

The Nicene Creed BCP p. 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

God of mercy, we pray for all in any kind of need or trouble: For those whose lives are closely linked with ours, and those connected to us as part of the human family. For refugees and prisoners; for the sick and suffering, the lonely and despairing; for those facing violence; for all held down by prejudice or injustice. Awaken in us compassion and humility of spirit, as we seek and serve Christ in all persons. Add your prayers, silently or aloud. God of mercy, People Hear our prayers for all who are in need. God of grace, we pray for those who have died: For the faithful in every generation who have worked for justice; for prophets who called us to racial reconciliation; for martyrs who died because of hatred; and for all the communion of saints. Make us faithful to your call to proclaim your Good News, by word and example, and bring us at last into the glorious company of the saints in light. Add your prayers, silently or aloud. God of grace, People Hear our prayers for those who have died.

Presider Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart [and especially the hearts of the people of this land], that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

Eucharistic Prayer A

Presider The Lord be with you.

People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever say this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus S130 Holy, holy, holy

Page 12: St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost ......2020/10/18  · St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II Sunday, October

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the

God and Father of all.

Page 13: St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost ......2020/10/18  · St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 20th Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II Sunday, October

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Presider and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

The Lord’s Prayer BCP p. 346

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Instructed Eucharist Many of our members have expressed a desire for some sort of real-time worship teaching or commentary which would shed light on the various elements of the service. Such a teaching service is often known as an “instructed eucharist.” Next Sunday, October 25, 2020, we will have one service at 10:30 AM, where members will worship and learn about, "Why Episcopalians do what they do, when they celebrate the Eucharist." In order to be successful in achieving our goals, we must begin by focusing on the most basic act that a citizen can perform-VOTING. How many of you have access or know about early voting? Who needs a ride to the poll on Nov. 3? Do you know of anyone who needs help with voting? What questions do you have or what information do you need? Let your church help you or someone else! If we don’t get participation during the evening sessions, we will then cancel the evening Bible Study and just have the Tuesday noon sessions or we will go back to our regular scheduled day, which was on Wednesday's at noon. The new scheduled day is because many members have shared that Wednesday Afternoons & Evenings didn’t work, so we are trying something new.

In 2016, the Presidential race was decided by 22,000 votes. The voter turnout in Milwaukee dropped by about 40,000 votes from the 2012 to the 2016 election. Wisconsin’s April 7th primary election was a debacle proving that a free and fair 2020 election needs active citizen involvement. Just 30 minutes twice a week will do wonders for your mental and physical well-being. A Prayer for Those Affected by the Coronavirus O God of compassion, giver of life and health, we pray your healing mercies upon all who are in any way affected by the outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Comfort and sustain those who have been

stricken; relieve their pain, and restore to them your gifts of gladness and strength. Grant to all in authority the courage to make wise

decisions that are essential for the common good, and strengthen them to lead institutions that care for those whom they serve. Watch over all first responders and those in the medical professions whose duty it is to care for the sick; guard them from all danger, and keep

them safe in the knowledge that is through their sacrifice and service that the health of the whole community is promoted.

Mercifully accept these our prayers, O God of all comfort, and our only help in time of need. Amen. -The Rt. Rev. Eugene Sutton
