10 Commandments
The 10 Commandments are not suggestions Thousands of years ago on Mount Sinai, the people
of God were given a set of rules to live by through Moses; these were known as the 10 Commandments.
It was a small enough number that people could easi-ly remember them. They were short and to the point; people did not need to be schol-
ars to understand them. God also gifted His people with free will. They could choose to
heed or not heed the rules. It seems pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? Live by the
rules and attain everlasting life. Disregard the rules and endanger personal salvation.
Yet God understands that we are human & often im-perfect in our actions. In His infinite mercy, He pro-vides us with the sacrament of Reconciliation for
those times we don’t meet our goal of living the Ten Commandments. Repentance allows us to continue
down the right path even if we take detours. So why do we not accept our sinfulness, repent, and
move forward? Why do we make excuses like blam-ing infidelity on alcohol or lying to a loved
one to avoid blame? We need to get back to taking ownership of our actions, not looking for loopholes. Jesus said, “Let your
‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes’, and your ‘No’ mean ‘No’.” We’re either following the Ten
Commandments or we’re not. If we’re not, reconciliation can get us back on track—
but only if we accept our own sinfulness and stop trying to excuse it away. If you were given $10 to
name the commandments in order, could you?
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26th.
It is time to collect last year’s blessed palms for making ashes. Please bring them next weekend to Mass with you. There will be a

Stewardship Moment - February 16 - 6th Sunday Ordinary Time
“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes & Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” -Matt. 5:20
Thoughts on the gospel to help us think as stewards: The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law &
they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday & then gossiping about a fellow parishioner in the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.
