God in all things

The Spaces Between

Fire by Judy Brown

What makes a fire burn is space between the logs, a breathing space.

Too much of a good thing, too many logs packed in too tight can douse the flames

almost as surely as a pail of water would.

So building fires requires attention to the spaces in between, as much as to the wood.

When we are able to build open spaces in the same way we have learned to pile on

the logs, then we can come to see how it is fuel, and absence of the fuel together, that

make fire possible.

We only need to lay a log lightly from time to time.

A fire grows simply because the space is there, with openings in which the flame that

knows just how it wants to burn can find its way.

I recently attended a conference, which was mostly about well-being and

resilience for a busy and time poor age. Our theme was ‘Keep the Fires

Burning’. The poem by Judy Brown speaks simply and eloquently of that need

to find space in our lives, space to breathe. Space to find peace and joy and

meaning in our otherwise frantic lives. We were encouraged to ensure that we

give ourselves some space whenever and wherever we can. Not just finding

space, but using those spaces in ways that enhance our well-being. Those spaces

for me are; exercise, prayer and daily devotion, enough sleep, good nutrition,

socialising with friends, quality time with my wife and kids, regular church

attendance and a need to laugh (just a few things to attend to). I find that when

those things are missing or out of balance, my fire sputters and smokes and I’m

no good to me or anyone else.

How are the spaces in your life and lives of your children?

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not

even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves

to a quiet place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in

a boat to a solitary place. Mark 6: 31-32

IB Learners strive to be Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective IB Learner Profile

On the first two days of term, the staff

took part in a PYP in school workshop

on “Inquiry Learning”. As a school we

are committed to Inquiry learning as we

believe students thrive and learn best

when learning is relevant, has real life

applications, engages the learner with

questions and requires the student to

take responsibility. It is the process

initiated by the teacher or student that

moves the student from their current

level of understanding to a new and

deeper level of understanding.

Over the holidays I was able to read some of Kath Murdoch’s new book ‘The Power of

Inquiry.” Kath Murdoch is an expert on Inquiry and her new book is a ‘go to’ for anyone

that wants to understand more about Inquiry Learning.

Kath’s book and our professional development inspired me to do a unit on Inquiry in the

Resource Centre with the Year 2-5’s. It is important that we teach children how to inquire

and what inquiry looks like as some children are not naturally curious or wanting to solve

problems.

At the moment we are in the midst of coming up with our own essential agreement for

Inquiry, looking at various models of the Inquiry cycle and designing our own and defining

the term ‘inquiry’ in a way that we can all understand.

Later on in the term and into next term, the children will use this knowledge to complete

a ‘Passion Project’ - an inquiry into an area that they are passionate about. They are so

excited about starting iTime (inquiry Time) in the RC and having the chance to inquire into

an area of choice. Stay tuned for more information!

Entertainment Books 2016/2017

The 2016/17 Entertainment Book is $65 per book and, again, is full of great restaurants,

entertainment, accommodation and the list goes on—or you may like to have a digital

copy on your phone. Books are available NOW at the school office.

The Entertainment Book is a great GIFT IDEA. Ask your friends, relatives, work

colleagues, neighbours etc etc. If you have a 2015/16 Entertainment Book, this will run out

on 1 June 2016. When you buy your new book, you can use it straight away. Olive Fairclough 0414794704 or Liz Laynes 0417874632

Quality Schools Survey Thanks to everyone who completed the

recent Quality Schools survey. This has now closed

and we wait for the results.

School Council will consider the report and will

share with our families in due course.

Welcome Last Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome

Annabelle M to Mrs Derrington’s Year 1 class and

Madeleine M to Mrs Low’s and Mrs Fox’s Year 3

Peters and we hope they are already feeling very

much at home here in our community.

Working Bee

THANK YOU to the families who were able to

come along to last Saturday’s working bee. We

very much appreciate your commitment to our

school and sincerely value the work you do at these

working bees.

Parking Control

City of Mitcham has forwarded to us some

information regarding their enforcement of parking

restrictions around schools and kindergartens.

To provide for student safety around

roadways at school drop off and pick

up times, any breaches of the

Australian Road Rules observed by

compliance officers may result in the

issue of an expiation notice.

School Musical Dates

2016

Our school musical is set to return once again this

year.

The dates for the Musical are to be Tuesday 6

September and Thursday 8 September (Term

3, week 7). These dates are different from what

some may have been told previously.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by

this. In Art this term the year 4/5 classrooms are

inquiring into recycled and upcycled sculptures.

Students are planning their designs based around

materials that they can bring into school or could

possibly be collected from our school families. If

you have any recycled materials such as plastic

bottles, bottle tops etc that you could spare, the

students would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Ms Lauran Clayton

Can you help? The Year 2 and 3 class are beginning a unit of

inquiry on Art (Art can express ideas, values and

beliefs). We are keen to hear from any artists who

would like to come and share their artwork and

skills with our classes. Art comprises visual arts,

music, drama and dance.

Petria, Belinda and Abby (Rooms 9 and 10).

SPLOSHC News

Wow, this term is flying by! We have been busy

introducing new foods to our snack range, a

homework group and activities for the children.

In line with NAIDOC week we will be doing dot

paintings and ATSI flag painting.

Sandwiches and chicken wings have been big hits

so far, with the kids requesting these again and

again.

We have almost finalised our vacation care

program which we are really thrilled with. There

will be some old favourites in our program, as

well as some new exciting incursions and

excursions. Vacation care program will be out

towards the end of this term.

Keep your booking forms coming in, casual

bookings welcomed. If you need to contact

SPLOSHC please ring 0450 499 550.

we are asking that unless needed to support frail

grandparents, parents do not attend next

Friday. We thank you for understanding with

this.

Please note—additional car parking will be

available for our visitors across the road at the

Blackwood Football Oval.

We look forward to what is always a special day

on our school calendar and thank you in advance

for your contribution to our morning tea (see

P&F news on page 2 of today's newsletter).

The Annual General Meeting of the school was

held last Sunday immediately following our

regular worship service. The agenda included

reports from the Chairperson of School Council

and the Principal, and acceptance of the audited

financial statements for the year ended 31

December 2015.

School AGM Lost Property Two of our students have reported the following

lost items recently:

Brand new (un-named as yet) Size 10 Sports

Jacket—left in Hall on Tuesday

Small opal cross (from chain).

If you find either of these items, please kindly

return to the school office.

School Enrolment Policy A reminder that our School enrolment policy states: “Where a student is to be withdrawn from the school,

parents are required to give the Principal one term’s notice, in writing, before the withdrawal date, otherwise

parents will be liable for an additional term’s fees”. If you would ever like to discuss your child/ren’s future

enrolment situation, please contact the Principal.

Asthma Policy Current recommendations from the Asthma

Council advised that:

Infection control guidelines indicate that spacers and

masks should be used by one person only.

Therefore the use of non-disposable spacers and

masks cannot be used between students. We have

purchased alternative disposable spacers.

The issuing of school supply disposable spacers is

unlikely as students with asthma have their ventolin

and spacer in their own backpack or stored in the

first aid room. However, if students require ventolin

administration and do not have their own spacer

and mask, the school disposable spacers will be used

and parents invoiced the replacement cost.

Students are encouraged to have their own reliever

medication and spacer kept either in their backpacks

or in the first aid room.

Medication Administration If your child requires analgesics whilst at

school..

Analgesics and other medications which can be

purchased over the counter without a prescription

(eg panadol) must be prescribed by a doctor if

school staff members are asked to supervise

administration. It is a requirement that the doctor

completes a Medication authority form. These

medications should also be provided on an ‘as

needs’ basis and kept on school premises only for

the duration of requirement.

The required Medication authority form is available

on the St Peters school website (found under Parent

Information / Forms).

Student self administration of ventolin whilst

at school…

Older students can often, on the advice of the

parent/guardian and doctor, carry and manage their

own medication. If your child is able to self

administer their medication please ensure that the

front office has a copy of the asthma plan with

parental or doctor consent that self administration

is appropriate.

It is important that:

the medication is in the original pharmacy-labelled

container;

your child is advised to report to the supervising

teacher if their medication is ineffective or requires

repeated use; and

the medication is stored where younger students are

not able to gain access.

Information on medication administration…

Other than medications for the treatment of asthma

or anaphylaxis; medications should only be stored at

school for the period of time specified for use. This

ensures the medication is medically warranted. All

medications provided must be prescribed by a

health professional. The instructions must match

those on the pharmacy label of the container.

For your information regarding storage of

medication at school…

Safe storage of medication requires as a minimum

standard that the medication is:

Prescribed by a doctor.

Provided by the parent or guardian.

Delivered to front reception as a daily supply (or

week’s supply at the most, except in long-term

continuous care arrangements eg asthma, anaphylaxis).

This might require you to organize a second labelled

container from the pharmacy for safe storage at home.

Provided with written instructions from the parent,

guardian or doctor. These must match those printed

on the product packaging.

Library News LIBRARY BOOKS and READERS

REQUIRING REPAIR Parents—please note: If students have any school

books that are in need of repair please do not

attempt it yourselves. We prefer to repair them in

the library to aid in their longevity. For example:

sticky tape not only can damages the pages when

being removed but over time goes yellow and can

impede any future repair.

The Book Fair is on its way to St Peters next week and, therefore, we

are not sending home Issue 4 catalogues

for the Book Club.

If there are any families who are unable to

come in to the Book Fair, please email

Sharon at

[email protected]

and she will send home a catalogue.

The BOOK FAIR OPENING DAYS are

Thursday 9 June to Tuesday 14 June.

It will be open before and after school each day with

extended opening hours during Grandparents’ Day.

SEE YOU THERE!!

Thank you to all from the ALWS! A donation of $660.60 was recently forwarded to

ALWS, raised from Term 4 2015 and Term 1 2016

Chapel offerings. The offering from Term 4 2015

has been allocated to where it is needed most –

South Sudan, and the Term 1 donations to the East

Africa Hunger Appeal. Thank you all for your

support of the ALWS’ very important work.

St Peters Out of School Hours Sport News

Term 2/3 OSH Sport Fees The following fees will be applied to family’s school fees account.

Netball - $50 per player

Basketball - $15 per player (for the use of the school supplied basketball tops).

If you have already paid the once off fee of $25 for Basketball (in Term 1) PLEASE ensure that Sharon is

notified at the above email address.

OSH Sport Housekeeping We understand that there will always be late nominations for Out of School Hours Sport. However,

parents must come through the correct channels. Please ensure you speak to or email Sharon, even if

you speak to the coach ([email protected]).

We need to take in to consideration that:

Some teams may be at their player limit.

Some associations may have age restrictions.

We miss out on the opportunity of nominating more than one team per sport or age group

(more players means greater opportunity).

This leads to less game time for everyone on the team.

If you feel that there is action to be taken regarding any issues, even team numbers, please speak to your

coach and Sharon before taking any action. If further action is to be taken, we will discuss as an OSH

Sport Committee and get back to you as soon as possible.
