St. Peter’s Junior High
A flip book is a book with a series of pictures that vary gradually from one page to the next, so that when the pages are turned rapidly, the pictures appear to animate by simulating motion or some other change.

These flipbooks are awesome, but take more time than we have. Feel free to borrow ideas and simplify or shorten them for your project.
Step 1: Make the Blank Flipbook ◦ Ms. Noseworthy has made one for you (lucky you!)
Step 2: Create a storyboard
Using the worksheet provided, draw the characters and background at the beginning, middle and end of your story/ action.
TIP: Keep it simple! You only have a few frames to tell your story!
Check out this link to see a storyboard and it’s animation.

Step 3: Fill in your flip book
- Starting with your back page, draw your characters (and background if you wish). Turning the next page, make slight changes to your character using the image behind as a guide.
How to Fill in a Simple Flipbook
Action has a clear beginning, middle and end.
Animation is smooth ◦ The characters/ objects should not jump around the
page.
Backgrounds are consistent
Animation has at least one coloured item throughout
Has a clear title page: ◦ Title
◦ Your name
◦ Fully coloured
Start at the back. You can trace from the previous frame that way.
Leave about an inch from the staples blank- you won’t see this area when you are flipping!
Use a mechanical pencil OR keep your pencil very sharp!!
Draw in your background or stationary items first
Only make slight movements from frame to frame
To make a character look like they are moving, add little movement lines behind the character/ object in the direction it is going.
Changing the size of the character will give the idea of someone getting closer or further away.
Moving the background (clouds, waves, floor tiles) in the opposite direction of your character will make it look like you it is moving.
Step 4: Flip and ENJOY!
- Write your title on the cover, along with your full
name.
- Colour your cover
- Now you may add tape over your staples if you wish. Ask me for assistance if you need it.
