Sea Sunday: Today is Sea Sunday, when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Without them we would not have most of the items we buy in the shops. Today’s retiring collection is for Stella Maris, (Apostleship of the Sea), the Church’s official maritime welfare agency. It supports seafarers both practically and spiritually. This collection is vital to enable it to continue its work. To donate online, and for more information please visit www.apostleshipofthesea.org.uk.

Wedding: Congratulations to Chloe Hope and Oliver Beart who were married in St Peter’s yesterday.

Baptism: Welcome to the family of the church Aaron Iwaniak and Karoly Ignacz baptised this weekend.

Prinknash Abbey Events: Saturday July 20th Fr Martin will be continuing the series of talks on the History of the Church in the meeting room at the Prinknash cafe at 10:30 am with "The Rise of Islam and its effects on the Church in the 7th Century". Also on Saturday July 20th, from 2.00pm – 4.00pm, the exploring faith group session in the meeting room with Fr Martin and Dr Sarah Richards will be "Exploring Islam". Saturday 27th July will be a retreat day of "praying with a focus on the beauty in nature", a peaceful day starting with Mass in the Abbey chapel at 9.30am and then moving to the meeting room at 10.15am, with plenty of time to enjoy the monastery walled garden in the afternoon. All welcome.

Church Car Park: When using the church car park for weekend masses can we ask parishioners to fill the parking bays first before parking down the middle, and when parking in the middle to do so in a way that enables cars to park in two rows. Please also be aware that the opening onto London Road is for exit left only.

Little Church: Today is the last Sunday for Little Church for the summer. It will resume again in September. We extend our sincere thanks to the Little Church leaders and helpers.

Year of Prayer - 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time ‘Who is my neighbour?’ asks a doctor of the Law in his attempt to clarify exactly what is being asked of him when the law speaks of loving God and neighbour. Jesus recognises his narrow concern and responds by recounting an incident of rural violence. We know the story well. It teaches clearly that love is the core and meaning of life and there are no limits. The lawyer’s question concerns the genuineness and depth of our love. How far will we go? Are their limits to our love? Do we only love when it is convenient or does our love for our neighbour take us out of our comfort zone? The neighbour in the story is a Samaritan, despised by the Jews for apparently having little concern for morality or for religion. Yet, he is the one who stops when he sees someone in need and responds with compassion and kindness. If there are parallels for us today I might want to ask myself how I would respond if my neighbour happened to be a refugee struggling across dangerous seas to reach safety or a drug addict on the street or someone from a different faith or culture who does things differently to me? Following the Gospel is not an easy option. It can challenge the very heart of who we are. Today, let us pray for an open and generous heart which is ready and willing to respond to anyone who might need our help this week.

Next Weekend: Sunday 21st of July – 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Genesis: 18:1-10 Colossians 1:24-28 Luke 10:38-42
