Acts rz:r-u / z Timothy 4:6-8, r7-r8 I Matthew 16:13-19

What was it like in the years after the crucifixion?

What was it like to talk about an experience and a relationship unlike anything

ever encountered?

What was it like to go to jail for preaching what you described as Good News

even though it seemed foolish to many of the People who were listening?

Paul saw it in terms of a race whose finish line was heaven and for which he

was willing to spend his last ounce of energy'

Peter saw that once he acknowledged who Jesus was, he had no choice but to

proclaim the truth of his heart. He knew Jesus was the Messiah because he saw

it in the look of those who were healed, fed, and restored at Christ's hand. He

experienced it in the love Christ gave him even after he denied him' He saw it in

the faces of those he healed in Christ's name and who eagerly came to baptism

and the outpouring of the SPirit'

What is it like now? How do we know Jesus is the Messiah in our hearts? And

how has that made a difference in our Iives? ls this relationship so unlike any

other that we are willing to be poured out, to spend our energy, to proclaim the

Good News even though it may seem foolish?

That's an uncomfortable question for many Catholics. For many of us, religion

and faith are private matters, and sometimesthat helps us avoid arguments or

endless debate. But the compelling story of our redemption begs to be told, if

hot in words, than in lives transformed. This is our story and our race to be run-f u ll out to the verY last.

d e ar PAD Rf,

I haue a Latina jiend who is planning her daughter's quinceafiera.

It's as if she's planning a wedding. Please explain.

Quinceofiera (keen-seh-ah-NYAlR-ah) is Spanish for"fifteen-year-old girl." It's also the word used for the LatinAmerican celebration of a girl's entrance into youngadulthood on her fifteenth birthday. Some people compare it to an American Sweet 16 parq, but because a religious ceremony is part of the celebrationit's actually more like a thirteen-year-old girl's bat mitzvahin the Jewish tradition.A quinceafiera usually begins with a rite called the Order forthe Blessing on the Fifteenth Birthday (Bendici6n al cumplir

quince aiios), which can take place within or outside Mass.

A parry that resembles a wedding reception follows, so youmake a good comparison when you say your friend seems

to be planning a wedding. A quinceafiera can also be like awedding celebration in that some weddings get out ofhand and become more of a production tha;n a celebrationof love. That's not to say that parties aren't important. It'simportant to celebrate a wedding and to celebrate it well.In the same way, it's important in some cultures tocelebrate a girl's fifteenth birthday. Your friend wants togive thanks to God for the life of her daughter, and thatsurely is a wonderful thing to celebrate.
