A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World
Letter from the Pastor
Well, we’ve gotten through Easter. We’re finished with Lent and all of the Holy Week. We’ve been
through the valley of Jesus’ death on the cross and through the peaks of Jesus rising from the dead and
coming out of the tomb. All the ups and downs of Lent have concluded, and now we begin to get into the
summer season. Like after Christmas, there is kind of this sense of “now what?” that permeates the church.
Speaking from a pastor’s perspective, there’s kind of this hangover feeling. We went through Jesus’
victory over the grave to this liturgical season where not much happens. The high holy days are behind us for
a while and there isn’t much excitement to look forward to. At least not in the Christmas and Easter sense of
excitement.
But there is some work that can be done here. The upside about not having all of these big
celebrations is that we can start to take care of little things that may have fallen by the wayside. There is
work to be done in our spiritual lives and in the church. While it seems like we’re entering somewhat of a
boring time where nothing really happens, it’s a great time to work on these little things. After all, the work
of God isn’t always flashy and it isn’t always a big production. Sometimes it’s the little things—helping
someone in need, taking time to engage in a new spiritual practice, or even just carving out time to read the
Bible—that can all be options in this “barren liturgical season”.
We’ve talked about it in service before—we can’t always be at the fever pitch. Sometimes we need to
have a bit of a rest or to work on the smaller, less visible pieces, which is not less important. Indeed, it seems
that if we don’t take care of these smaller things, the big things may fall apart on us.
So, as we approach this season, let’s try to keep in mind the idea that while it seems there’s not much
to look forward to, let’s take the time to work on the smaller things. There is still plenty we can do and a lot
to be excited about. We have the ability to continue God’s work, even in times that don’t seem to be
particularly holy. So, as we go into this season, when the holy days are few and far between, let us look for
places where we can still do the will of God; let us look for things we tend to overlook but can now work on.
See you in the pews,
Pastor Jeff

SPRING CLEANING
In lieu of scheduling a designated workday,
there will be a list of much needed cleaning jobs
posted in the lobby for members to do at a
convenient time for them. With so many
scheduled events this Spring/Summer, a
scheduled day is not possible. We’re hoping all is
finished before the bicentennial celebration.
As you complete a job, please mark it off the list.

Saturday, June 3, 2017 • Entrees of Steak or Chicken
• Theatrical Entertainment
• $25 per Person
• Silent Auction
• Lots of Laughs—Fun for All!
Entertainment by: “Die Laughing Dinner Theater”
Theme—Murder Mystery
“CSI Marthasville”
Prepare to be Fingerprinted! Billionaire Seymour Butz is the victim of a homicide. Minnie Butz, the widow, has
followed his last request to have an “After Party” with family and friends. Some
of the Forensic Evidence was compromised at the lab, so CSI Gil Gristle arrives
to recreate the crime scene. Will the evidence show the killer to be Jim Shorts,
the Health Club employee, Eggfoo Young, the cook at his favorite restaurant, or
his lawyer Sue MeDry? Maybe the Butz Family wanted him dead so they could
inherit all his billions: Both Grandson Payne “Indie” Butz and Granny Fanny Butz
had their reasons to “twerk” Seymour into an early grave. Perhaps Minnie Butz
will get pinched for the murder? Follow CSI Gristle as he questions the guests,
gathers DNA samples and swabs for laughs to find the killer. • Reservations are required—sign up in the lobby for your choice of entrée.
• We are accepting donated items for the silent auction—please have them to the church
during the week before.
• Set-up workday will be Friday, June 2nd—time to be determined.
• Contact Diane Freese, Marigene Kersten, or Cindy Buescher with questions.
The steak dinner committee wishes to thank you in advance for your support. Proceeds will benefit the Parsonage Renovation/Building Fund, pending on Congregational Vote.

HELP WITH BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION NEEDED
Cathie Schoppenhorst and I are co-chairs of the Marthasville Bicentennial
Committee. There are some big events coming up in which help is needed. The first is
the Marthasville to Peers on the Katy Trail event on May 21, 2017. The second
is a historical walk through St. Paul’s Cemetery on May 28, 2017.
The biggest event, for which the most help is needed, is the Heritage Festival Bicentennial Celebration on June 17-18, 2017. Here are just a few areas in which
help is needed for this event: help setting up and putting away; moving tables and chairs;
guiding vendors to their assigned work areas; parking; working in the soda trailer;
hosting visitors to the Grabs house; supervising a pedal tractor pull; furnishing and
driving a golf cart; and many other jobs to be done.
If you would be willing to help make the bicentennial celebration a huge success by
volunteering to work in one of the areas, please call me at 433-5474. Thank you.
