FROM FATHER RANING
A man and wife, both 60 years old, were celebrating their 35,h anniversary. During the
party, a fairy appeared and offered each of them a wish. Now all her life, the wife had
longed for a trip around the world. So the fairy waved her wand, and poof, the wife had a
ticket in her hand for a world cruise! Next it was the husband’s turn. He’d been faithful for
35 years, but now he revealed his inmost desire, “I want a wife 30 years younger than me!”
he said.
“Granted,” said the fairy who waved her wand. And suddenly the husband was 90!
His deepest desire defined what he became! It always does in the end!
In Sunday’s first reading, when Joshua challenged the Israelites to make the defining
choice about whom they’d follow, they chose the Lord, and so they shaped the whole rest
of their lives. And when Jesus asked Peter to choose, he chose Jesus: “To whom shall 1 go,
Lord?” In doing that Peter set his course from that spot all the way to his grave many years
later. His “yes” defined and shaped the rest of his life.
How many of us have really chosen the Lord as the definer and shaper of our lives? There’s
one way to find out. Track the pattern of your choices. Day in, day out, what do you usually
choose, and how do you go about choosing it? As you make your decisions, what do your
secret inner conversations sound like? Recall all that hi-speed chatter inside your head?!
First Reading: Joshua and the people renewed their commitment to God.
What can I do today to renew my commitment to God?
Second Reading: Paul encourages us to live in love, creating the kind of community that
God wants.
What loving thing can I do to help build God’s community?
Gospel: Many people left Jesus because his message and lifestyle were too hard.
What parts of Jesus’ message are hard for me to follow?
HOLY HOUR for VOCATIONS Saturday 5.00-6.00pm Many of us fear people in
authority as authority can
be used rightly or wrongly.
As Christians we are called
to see power as service.
We shall all be judged on
love.
MOMENTS OF MERCY I want you to become like
a knight experienced in
battle, who can give orders
to others amid the
exploding shells. In the
same way, My child, you
should know how to
master yourself amid the
greatest difficulties and let
nothing drive you away
from me, not even your
falls (Diary 1823)

RETIRED AND SICK CLERGY The Clergy Support Foundation of the Diocese of
Parramatta assists in meeting the needs of the
retired and sick priests of the Diocese. The
Bishop’s Collection for Retired and Sick Clergy,
is held on Father’s Day each year to support the

target with donations totalling $205,000 and the
Foundation thanks you for this contribution. This
year the appeal in the Diocese will be held on the
weekend of September 1-2.
A third collection will be held on this weekend at
each Mass. Special envelopes will be available
and all donations over $2 are tax deductible. If you
wish to claim a tax deduction, please tick the box
and write your details clearly on the envelope.
