In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-December were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A fa-mous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to De-cember 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift giving, of hospitali-ty in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a peni-tential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most.

First Reading — From Bethlehem-Ephrathah shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel (Micah 5:1-4a). Psalm — Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved (Psalm 80). Second Reading — We have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Christ once for all (Hebrews 10:5-10). Gospel — Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken by the Lord would be fulfilled (Luke 1:39-45).

Throughout our lives, we retain the language and hab-its of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an under-ground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pro-nouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith.

CATHOLIC HERALD

MESSAGE FROM BISHOP SOTO

DIOCESE OF SACRAMENTO

Have you ever considered working for the Diocese of Sacramento? It is a place where you are able to grow your faith while serving the ministry and mission of the Bishop of Sacramento. As Catholics we believe that all persons are called by God to contribute to the sanctifica-tion and transformation of the world by fulfilling their own particular duties in the spirit of the Gospel an Christian discipleship. To apply for a position, please email a short cover letter, resume, and application to [email protected] Posi-tions are open until filled. For more information and complete job descriptions, visit www.scd.org/employment. Thank you!

Message from Bishop Soto…… Tuesday, January 22nd 2019 marks the 46th anniver-sary of the lamentable 1973 U.S. Supreme Court Deci-sion, Roe v Wade. In prayerful observance I designate January 22 2019 as a Diocesan Day of Reparation. I ask the clergy and laity to join me in cooperating with God’s redeeming grace in these ways: Jan. 19./20: clergy are asked to pray and preach for a merciful end to abortion and a revived promotion of the gospel of life, and encourage all to observe the January 22 Diocesan Day of Reparation. Jan 22: all are asked to observe this Day of Repara-tion through fasting, prayer, penance and works of mer-cy. Helping at food distribution enters, visiting the sick or imprisoned and assisting at shelters for women and families in need. For those able to fast it is recommend-ed that they limit themselves to one full meal. Those choosing to abstain may refrain from eating meat or anything normally consumed as part of their daily rou-tine. Jan 22/23: all are invited to attend the 12:10pm Ca-thedral Mass. Jan. 26: all are encouraged to participate in the Walk for Life West Coast in San Francisco. More information about schedules, speakers, travel and related events can be found at www.walkforlifewc.com. May our prayers, acts of penance, public witness and works of charity on these days help restore a culture of life to our country so marred by the Court decision of Roe v Wade. May the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary bring us into fuller communion with the merciful mission of our Lord Jesus Christ. Bishop Jaime Soto

ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL MINISTRY

CHRIST THE KING RETREAT CENTER

PILGRIMAGE WITH FR. JOYLE

This year’s Flu season is expected to be one of the worst ever and its still not to late to get a flu shot! The best defense against the flu is a shot. Everyone over the age of 6 months should get a shot. For patients with asthma or other lung conditions this flu is one more problem for the lungs to cope with. Patients with diabe-tes already have a damaged immune response so are more susceptible to flu. Breathing can easily and quick-ly be compromised.

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR MASSES

The St. Michael the Archangel Ministry needs more min-isters to join us, especially those of you who are bi-lingual. This ministry is created and commissioned to maintain a prayerful-worshiping campus in a safe environment for our parishioners and our community. You will have the oppor-tunity to actively lead and support St. Paul’s Emergency Plan. This plan includes, but not limited to; fire safety, evacuation plan, active shooter awareness and general safety at St. Paul. If you have the following professional background we ask you to share your God given talents and align with this ministry: Law enforcement, military, safety, security, education, le-gal, medical, social services, psychiatry, love for our fellow men and women. We invite all to join us. Interested? Please call Dale Yamamoto (916)257-3323 or the parish office.

The Camp Fire in Butte County has proven one of the most destructive fires in state history. The loss of the city of Paradise has claimed most of the schools and many students will be unable to return and finish their school year in Paradise. We have open seats in our Catholic elementary and high schools in the Northern Sacramento Valley and would like to make them available to these displaced Paradise students. Tuition will be waived for these stu-dents for the remainder of the school year. We ask your help in supporting these families. Dona-tions are needed for such things as uniforms, school ma-terials, hot lunches, field trips etc. Any surplus will be used for future support for the affected families and Catholic schools of the region. “Behold I Make All things new” New Year’s Eve Retreat—Dec 31—Jan 1st. Christ the King Retreat Center 6520 Van Maren Lane, Citrus Ht.s As 2018 draws to a close we must not forget that the most important resolutions we can have are in regard to our faith. In the mystery of His Incarnation, God the Son comes to die. God takes all that is ugly and old and rotten in this world and draws it into his self. Here death dies. Here the old gives way to the new. Here hope is reborn. We must remember that Christ has the power to transform us completely from the inside out.

NAVIDAD

(Is 9, 5)

SEGUNDA COLECTA
