Prior to this invitation, we hear of Jesus proclaiming his joy at the fact that the Father has revealed the mysteries of the Kingdom to ‘mere children’ while hiding these realities from the ‘learned and clever’ [11:25]. This proclamation came about due to the fact that Jesus encountered many doubtful and obstinate people who refused to accept the very core of what he was placing before them – the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven through the many good works (miracles) shown by Jesus. It becomes the realm of the ‘little ones’ to be able to receive, accept and live by the reality of the Kingdom’s mystery. This proclamation paves the way for today’s Gospel passage [Matthew 13: 1-23] the parable of the sower, which speaks of the many different soils that led to either full growth of the seed or to its expiration. The Gospel picks up the theme of the acceptance of the reality and message of the Kingdom of Heaven. It tries to answer some important questions: why do so many people fail to listen to and comprehend the word of God? Why does Jesus seem to not be successful in conveying to the people the notion of the Kingdom of Heaven? Why does the word of God not produce abundant fruit more readily? We are made aware of the immense power of God’s word. Isaiah in our First Reading [55:10-11] notes that just as the rain renews and refreshes nature, so too the word of God has its place within the story of humankind. We learn that the word of God is as creative and productive as the rain – that it has the power to affirm, to give life and to generate salvation. God however wishes to respect our human freedom. Our human assent to God’s word is part of the process of unleashing its potential creativity and power. Without our contribution, there would be no fruitfulness. Today’s Gospel which forms the third teaching section of Matthew’s Gospel, asks us to consider some of the conditions in which we receive God’s word. The seed which is the word of God, falls on four types of soils: can fall on the side of the road where it is eaten by the birds. This describes a situation where one hears but fails to understand the word; the second condition is that of the seed falling on rocky soil – a condition where there is no depth of commitment to the word and so its impact withers; the third condition – that of the seed falling among thorns – describes a situation where other concerns and situations can distract us from allowing the word to affect our lives; and finally, we have the condition where the seed falls on rich soil – a condition where the presence of God’s word is understood and where it bears significant fruit. The parable’s scenario expresses how the word of God is received: from no fruition to partial acceptance through to full bearing of fruit. The Gospel Parables always invite the listener to place themselves within their context and scenario of the story being told. As we meditate on the significance of today’s parable we are challenged to realise that we are not the sower but the various different soils within the story. We are asked to see if we are in a position where we can listen to, receive and comprehend the word of God. We can only do this if we ‘unclutter’ our lives from all that can distract us and prevent us from listening and responding to God’s word. In other words, to live as the ‘little ones’ and not like the ‘learned and clever’ who were mentioned in last week’s Gospel. May the Lord free us from all that impedes the creative power of his word in our lives and our world. From the Dean’s Desk

Dear Friends in Christ,

Last week’s Gospel [Matthew 11:28-30] centred on the welcoming invitation that Jesus gives to all people who are struggling with

life’s many issues and who are seeking solace and refreshment along the spiritual journey. Prior to this invitation, we hear of Jesus

proclaiming his joy at the fact that the Father has revealed the mysteries of the Kingdom to ‘mere children’ while hiding these

realities from the ‘learned and clever’ [11:25]. This proclamation came about due to the fact that Jesus encountered many doubtful

and obstinate people who refused to accept the very core of what he was placing before them – the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven through

the many good works (miracles) shown by Jesus. It becomes the realm of the ‘little ones’ to be able to receive, accept and live by the reality of the

Kingdom’s mystery. This proclamation paves the way for today’s Gospel passage [Matthew 13: 1-23] the parable of the sower, which speaks of the

many different soils that led to either full growth of the seed or to its expiration.

The Gospel picks up the theme of the acceptance of the reality and message of the Kingdom of Heaven. It tries to answer some important questions:

why do so many people fail to listen to and comprehend the word of God? Why does Jesus seem to not be successful in conveying to the

people the notion of the Kingdom of Heaven? Why does the word of God not produce abundant fruit more readily?

We are made aware of the immense power of God’s word. Isaiah in our First Reading [55:10-11] notes that just as the rain renews and refreshes nature,

so too the word of God has its place within the story of humankind. We learn that the word of God is as creative and productive as the rain – that it has

the power to affirm, to give life and to generate salvation. God however wishes to respect our human freedom. Our human assent to God’s word is

part of the process of unleashing its potential creativity and power. Without our contribution, there would be no fruitfulness.

Today’s Gospel which forms the third teaching section of Matthew’s Gospel, asks us to consider some of the conditions in which we receive God’s

word. The seed which is the word of God, falls on four types of soils:

• can fall on the side of the road where it is eaten by the birds. This describes a situation where one hears but fails to understand the

word;

• the second condition is that of the seed falling on rocky soil – a condition where there is no depth of commitment to the word and

so its impact withers;

• the third condition – that of the seed falling among thorns – describes a situation where other concerns and situations can distract

us from allowing the word to affect our lives;

• and finally, we have the condition where the seed falls on rich soil – a condition where the presence of God’s word is understood

and where it bears significant fruit.

The parable’s scenario expresses how the word of God is received: from no fruition to partial acceptance through to full bearing of fruit.

The Gospel Parables always invite the listener to place themselves within their context and scenario of the story being told. As we meditate on the

significance of today’s parable we are challenged to realise that we are not the sower but the various different soils within the story. We are asked to see

if we are in a position where we can listen to, receive and comprehend the word of God. We can only do this if we

‘unclutter’ our lives from all that can distract us and prevent us from listening and responding to God’s word. In

other words, to live as the ‘little ones’ and not like the ‘learned and clever’ who were mentioned in last week’s

Gospel. May the Lord free us from all that impedes the creative power of his word in our lives and our world.

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to personally thank you for your support of Light

Up St Pat’s. The team’s focus was on ‘evangelisation’ and I

think they made great in-roads in this ministry. I know this

was a huge team effort but I would like to thank Chris Lee as he

was the instigator behind this event. His commitment had no

boundaries and has taken this Parish to a new level. Of course

the core team was a great support and played a major role in

the success of this event. God bless.
