3 November 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians, Congratulations to our pupils who will be receiving first communion at St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday. May
God's love and blessings be with you on this auspicious day and remain with you always. Of all seven
sacraments, the Holy Eucharist, or Holy Communion, is the most important to Catholicism. Best wishes to our
Senior Primary Choir who will be performing at this special occasion. All parents are welcome to attend. The
Mass should end at 10h45, if you opt to fetch your child after the service.
Please note that the Primary- and High Schools will dismiss at 12h00 on Friday, 10 November 2017 due to the
Remembrance Day proceedings taking place that day. This does not affect the Crèche.
This section is more important for Crèche parents to read, but actually applies to all. May I please ask that no
children be dropped off at school before 7 o’clock in the morning. The Crèche staff officially start at 7, and
the rest of the staff only arrive from 7 onwards. Our security staff have a general responsibility to keep our
campus safe, but they are not allowed to abandon their posts to look after any specific child. That’s not what
they were trained to do. Should anything happen at that moment, they would either compromise the safety
of the rest of the pupils by looking after your child, or your child’s safety might be at risk as the security staff is
not attending to their actual duties. On the days that school staff do arrive early, it is usually to prepare the
class for a specific task or to tidy up, etc. before everyone arrives. I would really appreciate your
understanding and cooperation in this regard.
May I please ask that you return your completed stationery and text book orders as soon as possible in order
for your packs to be prepared accurately and on time. There is an approximate 3- to 4-week waiting period
from date of order to delivery. The official cut-off date for orders was 1 November 2017. Late orders may result
in text book and stationery packs not being delivered on time due to the closure of many of the big suppliers
over the Festive Season. The prices, as indicated on the order forms, are only valid until 1 December this year.
All orders submitted after that date will only be processed in January 2018, so they may be subject to annual
increases by the suppliers. Please make sure that your order is correct as we may not return any text books to
our supplier.
If you have not yet registered for the My School reward card, please do so. The school receives a small
percentage from all related transactions. The success of the programme therefore depends on the number
of times you swipe your card. You can register online, or get a card at your local Woolworths store. It’s quick
and easy! Please select ‘St Patricks College – Kimberley’ as your beneficiary. It is free of charge, with no hidden
costs. The income generated from this initiative for the year thus far, totals R5294.23. It is not a lot of money,
but it doesn’t cost us anything to grow this amount.

On a positive note, I was reminded this week to daily choose JOY. It is easier said than done. When you are
having a good day, and your heart seems to explode with happiness, it is easy to feel joyful. But what about
the other days… when nothing seems to go your way, when everything is falling apart. We have all been
there. On those days, joy doesn’t seem to happen naturally. On a day like that one should choose to count
your God-given blessings rather than focus on your circumstances. Someone once said: "Joy is the settled
assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is
going to be all right, and the determined choice to praise God in all things." Let’s all remember Philippians 4:4
in the coming week: Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
Have a joyful weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Jacques Tredoux
Executive Head
The memory verse for next week is:
CARE FOR MY PEERS PROJECT
For many of us, buying sanitary pads is as easy as buying
bread, but this is not the case for millions of girls and women
in South Africa. They are at a permanent disadvantage. These
ladies are forced to stay at home as they are unable to afford
this basic necessity.
One of our Grade 10 pupils, Dineo Molgate, was shocked to
hear how many girls in poorer communities miss school, even
exams, when they have their periods because their parents
cannot afford to purchase sanitary towels.
She started an initiative called ‘Care for my peers’. Up till now
she has used her own pocket money to buy supplies and she
waits for special offers at chain stores to get better value for
money. With exams coming up, she says it is even more
important to help these girls. They should be focusing on their
studies and not have to worry about trying to avoid potentially embarrassing situations.
To assist Dineo in her efforts, the school has created a collection point for any sanitary products at
Mrs Francis’ office (Admin building). If you are able to assist with even one pack, please do so. You
will make a positive difference in someone’s life.
SENIOR PRIMARY CHOIR
The Senior Phase Choir has been requested to perform at St Mary’s
Cathedral for the morning service on Sunday, 5 November 2017.
Some of our pupils will be taking their First Communion at this service,
and therefore it is very fitting that the choir be there to participate
and add to this special service.
All choir members are required to:
Meet Mrs Solomon at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 08h30.
Be neat and tidy. The full summer school uniform must be worn, including a blazer.
The service should end between 10h30 and 11h00.
Life is a song - sing it. Life is a game - play it. Life is a challenge - meet it. Life is
a dream - realize it. Life is a sacrifice - offer it. Life is love - enjoy it. Sai Baba
