From the Pastor’s Desk

Not only is the coronavirus a serious health crisis, it has brought about economic hardship as well. Please know that our Parish Outreach office is open from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, should you be in need of food or other services. For the safety of all concerned, we will be serving people outside the rectory. Please call our office ahead of your visit at 631-265-2668 and speak through our intercom system at the side door of the rectory. Food items will be brought out to your car. If you are in the position to donate food, please bring donations to the Parish Outreach office between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Please use our intercom system and we will pick up donations at the side door. During the summer months, food pantry donations typically decline. Please keep us in mind during the summer. Contributions of fresh produce from your gardens are also welcome.

Thank you for your generosity during these difficult times.

We are Here to Help!

One of the challenging parts of sailing is making sure the sails are trimmed properly. Too much sail in a storm or strong wind can cause the boat to heel over too much and be almost impossible to steer. Reefing the sails means reducing the area of sail that is up. Less sail in a strong wind will keep the boat at the proper heel and move the boat well through the waves. Today we once again have the privilege and joy of coming into our home port for safety and the provisions we need to continue to weather the storms caused by the coronavirus and the protests. Our home port is the haven of our parish church where once again we can be refreshed, energized, and nourished by the Eucharistic presence of Jesus at Mass. For three months we have been forced to stay away from gathering publicly as the family of St. Patrick’s to be fed by Jesus at Mass. How good it is to come to the refuge and strength that only our faith brings us at our family meal. As we read in Psalm 46:2: God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress.” There is only one source of life-giving peace and security in our lives, and that is the gift of God’s life and love in Jesus. He weathered the storms of rejection, injustice, mockery, and abandonment with faith, hope, and love. Jesus could not be defeated, deterred, or defamed. Even before His Resurrection He had risen above all that is evil and now shares His Risen life with us. We are challenged to rise above fear, disappointment, anger, sarcasm, and doubt. Today is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. He is the food, love, and strength we truly need to not only weather the storms of life, but to live peacefully and hopefully every day. In today’s Gospel Jesus proclaims: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." (John 6:51) How blessed we are to have Him come into our very bodies, into the very being of who we are. There is

no greater nourishment and no greater love. Every day I am blessed to receive Jesus in the Eucharist and to spend time in His presence in the Blessed Sacrament. My prayer is always: “You are so good to me!” Today is truly special because we can come together to experience the presence of Jesus. Eucharist is a Greek word that means thanksgiving. How good it is to give thanks to God and to receive the love only He can give us. Truly this is a Eucharistic Day, the Thanksgiving Day of days. I offer the concluding prayers from the ritual of Benediction for your reflection and prayer:

THE DIVINE PRAISES

Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name.

Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man. Blessed be the name of Jesus.

Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart. Blessed be His Most Precious Blood.

Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar.

Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.

Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption.

Blessed be God in His angels and in His saints

Pray for our Military

Welcome Back! As we come back to Mass for the first time in three months, it is a good time to remember the very first Mass in our church on November 15, 2003. We had a brand new pastor (Fr. Walden) and our former pastor, Bishop Paul Walsh, ordained a bishop just a few months before, came to bless our new church. Welcome back to our church!

Page 6: St. Patrick R.C. Church · 2020-06-14 · St. Patrick R.C. Church 280 East Main Street, Smithtown, New York 11787 “Christ with us. Christ before us. Christ behind us.” June 14,

Gracious God, we are your people embraced by your love. We thank you for your presence with us throughout all time. Create us anew. Liberate us from that which keeps us from you. Enable us to recreate our world and restore justice. Heal us from every form of sin and violence. Transform us to live your Word more profoundly. Reconcile us so enemies become friends. Awaken us to the sacred; nurture our relationships; enliven our parishes; reunite our families. Fill us with joy to celebrate the fullness of life. Empower us to be a community of love growing in your likeness. Amen.

Please continue to say the following prayers each day as we seek God’s guidance, strength and courage

We are a People of Prayer

Thank you Father for the gift of life. Thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus. May my gratitude inspire and sustain me in doing everything I can to respect the lives of all people and to do all in my power to end abortion and everything else that harms, abuses, or threatens human life. Give me the courage and strength to live in your image each day. Amen.

Lord, the plight of our brothers and sisters is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare their lives to grant them patience and courage to continue their witness of Christian values with trust and hope. Lord, peace is the foundation of life; Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy. Amen.

The symbol to the right (the Arabic letter “N” for Nazarene) is being used to mark Christians in Iraq for persecution.

CONFESSIONS Our Saturday afternoon confession times, from

3:45 to 4:45 PM, have resumed but the location has changed in order to

observe social distancing protocols Please go to the St. Patrick Youth (old church) front entrance, seen at right. Greeters will be there to point the way to where confessions are being heard.

Please wear a face mask.

I ask you: have you ever thought that every time we go to the confessional, there is joy and celebration in heaven? Have you ever thought about that? It is beautiful … and fills us with great hope, because there is no sin to which we have stooped from which, by the grace of God, we cannot rise up again. There is no person who is beyond recovery, no one is beyond recovery. Because God never ceases to want what is good for us, even when we sin. - Pope Francis

Rosary Walk There is much to pray for in our country right now and on Thursday, June 4th, parishioners gathered at St. Patrick’s to pray in front of an Our Lady of Guadalupe image. They then took to the streets of Smithtown to pray for our community. The walk concluded with prayers at Planned Parenthood.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre is here to serve those in need. As Covid-19 attacks our island, as a faith community we are fighting back – implementing New York State’s emergency guidelines as our ministries continue serving vulnerable neighbors across Long Island.

Our ministries are responding to the crisis in incredible ways:

• Providing enhanced and expanded homecare services to those who were cared for in congregate day care programs which are now closed;

• Expanding our Meals-On-Wheels programs;

• Providing shopping services to those who are most vulnerable to the Pandemic;

• Assisting the underserved to get much needed internet service so that children can continue their education and parents can work from home.

• Keeping the outreach operations at our parishes strong for existing and new families who are struggling in their respective communities;

If you or a family member is in need of assistance, please contact Catholic Charities helpline at (516) 733-7045.

A gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps to support programs that bring love and care to those who are in need. Your support to the Appeal will help to ensure that our shared vision for Dramatic Missionary Growth in our Diocese will have a firm financial foundation.

Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone’s life. Thank you!

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” Then the righteous will answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

Let Us Pray Together

The world is in need of prayer and we ask all in out parish to unite in prayer, even though we are physically separated. At certain times during the day, Fr. Walden is inviting all those are able to join him in prayer: At 12:00 noon: Say an Our Father and this prayer that comes after it at Mass: Deliver us, Lord we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus

Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. At 3:00 PM: Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. This is a very simple and beautiful prayer using the rosary as a guide. The link below provides information on how to do this. At 7:30 PM: Pray the rosary for all suffering from the coronavirus and for those who are heroically caring for them. See the link below for information about the Mysteries of the Rosary. Fr. Walden will follow this program until the threat is over. How good and easy it is to pray together for our own needs and the needs of all the people of our nation and our world at this time.

Giving Made Easier Churches now routinely offer online giving for church donations. There are many reasons for this. Fewer people are using cash and checks. Mass attendance at your home parish is usually interrupted by vacations, business trips, illness, snow storms, etc. And many people find it easier (and greener) to not have to deal with church envelopes.

St. Patrick’s offers several forms of online giving:

(1) Faith Direct: Signing up for Faith Direct allows you to indicate a weekly contribution amount that is automatically withdrawn from your account. Just go to faithdirect.net or download the Faith Direct app from the App Store. Our Parish code is NY51.

(2) Our website: You can contribute at any time by going to our website: stpatricksmithtown.org. Just click the “Donate” button at the top right.

(3) Our Parish App: In addition to its many other features, the OneParish App has a donation page that allows quick and easy one-time or recurring donations. You can download the One Parish App at the App Store.

(4) Our newest electronic giving option is “Text to Give a program set up by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Just send a text message to 516-271-3338. In the message, type 155parishstpatrick - you will receive a message back with a link that you can use to make a donation.

A Prayer for Our Time

Jesus said to the Twelve: "Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father."

1. Jesus says even the hairs on our heads are counted. How does this intimate care for us by God affect you?

2. Jesus tells us to not be afraid of those who can harm us in this world. What makes you afraid?

3. Talk about a time when you overcame your fear.

God knows all about us. What are some of the things God knows about you that others may not?

Wake me up Lord, so that the evil of racism finds no home within me.

Keep watch over my heart Lord, and remove from me any barriers to your grace,

that may oppress and offend my brothers and sisters. Fill my spirit Lord, so that I may give

services of justice and peace. Clear my mind Lord, and use it for your glory.

And finally, remind us Lord that you said, "blessed are the peacemakers,

for they shall be called children of God." Amen.

Do everything with the greatest possible calm and serenity and out of the greatest, purest and holiest love of Jesus and Mary. - Fr. Jacques Philippe

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

A Prayer for Persons Suffering from the Coronavirus

Merciful God, hear our fervent prayer for all who suffer from the coronavirus.

May those who are infected receive the proper treatment and the

comfort of your healing presence. May their caregivers, families and neighbors be shielded from the onslaught of the virus.

Give solace to those who grieve the loss of loved ones.

Protect and guide those who strive to find a cure, that their work may conquer the disease and restore

communities to wholeness and health. Help us to rise above fear. We ask all this

through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, and in the name of your Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Persecution of Churches Continues in America

Prohibiting the reception of Holy Communion was one con-dition for churches to reopen according to a May 26 Execu-tive Order in Howard County, Maryland. "There shall be no consumption of food or beverage of any kind ... including as part of a religious service," the order stated. "If singing takes place, only the choir or religious leaders may sing." (1) This order coincided with statements from Dr. Anthony Fauci who recommended churches should stop distributing communion. "I think for the time being, you just gotta fore-stall that," Fauci said. (2)

Days later, the Maryland county reversed this Executive Order. "For the Catholic community, the reception of Com-munion is central to our faith lives and to our public wor-ship." (3) “We are pleased to hear that Howard county will be lifting restrictions on faith institutions ...." said the Arch-diocese of Baltimore. (4) A family of 12 in Virginia, has filed a First Amendment law-suit against Virginia Governor Northam over his COVID-19 Executive Order barring residents from freely assembling for religious worship and forbidding public gatherings of more than 10 people. The Center for American Liberty (CAL) is representing the family in its case against the restriction - which, in addition to stopping them from frequenting secular establishments as a group, bars them from "going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Holy Communion), and praying on their private property with their priest and other believers." (5) “The Executive Orders wrongly and unconstitutionally clas-sify the exercise of religion as non-essential," said a CAL attorney. "Governor Northam's restrictions on religious ex-pression are overly broad, discriminatory, and unconstitu-tional. Our plaintiffs have been blessed with 10 chil-dren. (This Order) discriminates against them because of the size of their family - ... while smaller families do not face such a prohibition." (6)

Catholic Bishops Designate Religious Freedom Week - June 22-29:

"To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other. Our allegiances are distinct, but they need not be contradictory, and should instead be complimentary. That is the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work together with fellow citizens for the common good of all who live in this land. That is the vision of our founding and the Constitution, which guaran-tees citizens of all religious faiths the right to contribute to our common life together."

The most deadly poison of our time is indifference. And this happens although the praise of God should know no limits. Let us strive, therefore, to praise him to the greatest extent of our powers. - St. Maximillian Kolbe

PARENTS, BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THESE OFFERINGS FROM FORMED

Pass It On is a series of presentations for parents who want to equip their children well for their life’s journey. Through 15 presentations, the authors, speakers, and experts in their respective fields offer their wisdom and experience to encourage and challenge parents as they wrestle with what they should be putting into their children’s backpacks. Each episode is filled with practical suggestions and helpful insights for moms and dads who want to hand on the faith to their children. These presentations are perfect for individuals to watch and listen to for daily encouragement. They are also great for couples who want to grow in clarity and unity as they embrace their parenting role together. Each presentation can stand on its own with very little preparation. The Pass It On series can easily be used by moms or parent groups, in home or parish settings. A downloadable discussion guide for the series is available. Each presentation is about 20 minutes in length.

Matt Fradd, a best-selling Catholic author, presents new data to show how the changes in the types and accessibility of pornography being promoted today make it far more dangerous and harmful than ever before. Matt draws from a wealth of experience to guide parents in taking decisive action to protect their children, and he empowers adults with specific wording to effectively address this sensitive topic with children of all ages before they encounter pornography or after they've been exposed to it.
