Staff Development Priorities for the Year During 2008 staff were particularly involved in the development of priorities relating to improving pedagogical practice with the teaching of Mathematics. Teaching staff increased their understanding of the scriptural background to the Religious Education units. Extensive inservice in First Steps- Writing was undertaken by all teaching staff. While maintaining a focus on the major areas of development staff have continued to review the reporting processes occurring at the school. This has led to much reflection on their understanding of reporting. From this, all teaching staff continue to examine their teaching practices and beliefs in light of this reflection. A focus on fair and equitable teaching practices to meet the needs of children with special needs and disabilities occurred. Use of Information Curriculum Learning Technologies in curriculum activities continued during 2008. As a result, some staff continued to assist others to make further use of various technologies in their teaching practice. Social Climate of the School Throughout the year continued attention was given to promoting the social climate of the school. Each term school staff implemented a Pastoral Care day with the students. Teachers were involved in working with students from a variety of year levels. These days allowed students and teachers from differing year levels to interact in an enjoyable manner while carrying out curriculum-based activities. These activities addressed many of the values education concepts. Additionally, each term a ‘Skills and Talent Show’ took place where children volunteered to share their God-given talents with the rest of the school which enriched the social and cultural life of the school. Students were also able to share with others their out-of-school activities. Throughout the school the pastoral care climate of caring for one another attempted to instill the Gospel values of Christ emphasizing justice, truth, and respect, thus promoting the mission of this Catholic school. Staff, students and parents worked within a climate of trust and respect to build common goals. This contributed to enriching on the social climate of the school while promoting inclusion and celebrating diversity. Monday morning assembly continued to include prayer, school pledge, school song and national anthem. Fortnightly assemblies on a Monday afternoon provided opportunities for the school to

Page 3: ST OLIVER PLUNKETT SCHOOL...component of the Health and Physical Education syllabus), E.L.F. (Early Literacy Foundations) and Multi-Lit programs, and regular Pastoral Care initiatives

celebrate prayer together and promoted the values of the school. Parents were always welcome to attend these prayer times. The Parents and Friends Association, the association of all parents, arranged social discos and barbecues, carried out fundraising on a regular basis, and supported local community events. Each term, one social event was organized. Two cake stalls were held outside the parish churches to promote the parish-school connection. At the end of the year support by the parent body of the Christmas Concert and BBQ was highly evident. Strategies for involving parents in their child’s education Parents were encouraged to be involved in their child’s schooling. Activities which promoted this involvement, but was not limited to: parent information evenings, participation in some excursions, class reading helpers, general classroom helpers, library assistance, computer assistance, support of swimming lessons (in lower school), class social events, tuckshop helpers, and assistance with motor program activities in the lower school. School Reflection on student performance in Literacy and Numeracy While many of this school’s results indicate that the school is performing above the State Average in many areas it must be remembered that this testing is just one more assessment activity which contributes to the complete picture of assessing and reporting processes at the school. It complements the constant assessment practices occurring. As such, all teaching staff review the results and examine any trends which may highlight areas needing additional attention in the teaching and learning activities throughout the school. In reading these results one needs to be mindful of the significant number of special needs students at the school who also participate in this testing regime. Additionally there is an ever-increasing number of students at the school who are further supported with their learning. Students in Queensland in 2008 had received 12 months less formal education than students in other States in Years 3, 5 and 7. In time this anomaly will be removed due to the introduction of the Preparatory Year which will bring students in Queensland into line with those from other States.
