Holy Apostle
Philip was part of
the initial twelve
followers of
Christ. Just like
Peter and
Andrew, he was
born and raised
along the Sea of
Galilee. He accepted the call of Christ and
immediately began to follow him (John 1:43).
After Christ’s Ascension and Pentecost, he began
to travel with great zeal into Asia and Greece. On
several occasions, he was nearly killed for his
words against false preachers but was saved
rather miraculously. He traveled often with his
own sister Marianna & the Apostles John &
Bartholomew, up until the time when he was
finally captured and tortured by the enraged
pagans. After killing a popular creature (a snake)
by way of prayer, a creature that was the subject
of the worship of the people, he was crucified
upside-down on a tree. When the earth opened up
and swallowed the persecutors, the people rushed
the rescue Philip and those tortured with him, but
Philip had already breathed his last. It was in the
year 86 AD that Philip gave up his life for the
Lord. His relics were later sent to Rome.
O Holy Apostle, Pray to God for us!
THE NATIVITY FAST BEGINS TOMORROW! Let us hunger for the spiritual food: The birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ approaches! As we
prepare ourselves for the Nativity, an increase in our life of prayer and meditation is
necessary. May we do everything necessary to increase our gratitude, our love, and our
dedication to the care of one another. Without these things, we cannot begin to hope for the
strength and faithfulness we need in order to carry the light of Christ in the world. Faithful are
instructed to abstain from certain foods as much as able, including meat, and to go lighter on
our feasting in general. Those who are able to fast from more than meat are encouraged to do
so and should see Fr. William to discuss options. We do this in order to remind us of the greater need we have
for the spiritual food that is given to us by God, from attending Church services especially but also in the tireless
service of one another, in daily prayer, and in the reading of scripture.
TODAYS ANNOUNCEMENTS

why not place an order for some delicious mixes, rubs

A REMINDER THAT CONFESSIONS ARE AVAILABLE
Fr. William will be available for confessions before and after Vespers services on Saturdays, up
until a half hour before Liturgy on Sundays, and by appointment throughout the week. Let us
begin to shine in spirit once again, being made free of the weight and stain of our own faults!
“Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” (Luke 5:12)
If you are thinking of
getting cookies on Sunday,
December 11th to be used
as a gift (or for yourself)
you may want to consider
pre-ordering. We
understand that it takes a
little of the fun out of the
Cookie Walk, but we
cannot guarantee how
many cookies will start the
day on Sunday. The best
selection is Saturday and
the pre-order team does a
phenomenal job!
An order form is attached
and there are extras near
the bulletin board!
WE WILL BE ROLLING COOKIES and making dough this afternoon. Please plan on joining right in for an
afternoon of rocking and rolling! Bring your apron! (kids – yours are waiting for you)
HOW CAN I HELP THE COOKIE WALK?
1) Right now, the best thing that all of us can do is to talk
to our neighbors, colleagues and friends and invite them to
the Cookie Walk or see if they would be interested in
buying a box (or two!) of cookies. Attached to this bulletin
is the CW order form. We are also receiving orders
through the church website at:
www.stnicholaschurchnyc.org/order-cookies.html. It
works beautifully either way and we have a team who will
fill the orders to give to you to deliver the next week.
2) Sign-up to help over the next two weeks and to volunteer at the event on
Saturday and Sunday. There are sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the Main
Hall. We now need over 50 people, to make sure we have the crowds, the
cookies, the crafts and the concessions covered on Saturday! There are fewer
demands for Sunday so 25 is manageable.
3) Next Saturday, December 3rd
, we will be making doughs to roll for the next
day. Can you spare a few hours? We could use your help.
4) DECEMBER 4TH
IS THE COOKIE WALK HALL PREPARATION
DAY We transform the Main Hall into our Cookie Wonderland. Please plan on
staying for a little while to help unpack, unwrap, decorate and get ready for our
big event the next weekend. It is really a fun day and gets you into the holiday
spirit as the aroma of fresh baked cookies wafts from the kitchen and Christmas
decorations are scattered about. It will be a rolling day for all of the kids, young
and young at heart. Every pair of hands makes a big difference.
5) Also on the bulletin board is the list for a week of baking prior to the Cookie Walk. For all of you that signed
up – thank you! It will be a busy week. If you have been waiting to see what your schedule is for that week,
please sign up now. There are slots in the morning, afternoon and evening. We have fun and work hard!

CONCERT AT 10th
STREET CHURCH
By God’s Grace, parish family and friends are
invited to enjoy reserved space in our choir loft at
the Christmas Concert this Dec 9th
& 11th
.
Space is limited. Because we have set our focus on
providing for the North Rockland Food Pantry
through this event, we are asking concert attendees
from our parish to simply provide a donation of at
least three non-perishable food items in exchange
for their ticket. If you are interested in attending
one of these days, please contact Fr. William at
212-254-6685 during the week. Please bring your
donated food to church.
THANKSGIVING FOOD DONATION
UPDATE
Bob Zizik volunteers at the North Rockland Food
Pantry and transports the collected food at St.
Nicholas to the food pantry. Bob reports that there
were two Thanksgiving food distributions on
Monday, Nov. 21st in the morning and evening. All
together food was distributed to over 340 people,
approximately 114 families. Every family was
provided a turkey with all of the trimmings,
potatoes, vegetables, greens, bread, even desserts.
We were truly blessed to have been able to help so
many people in such an elaborate way.
The number of families will increase as there will
also be deliveries to shut-ins but this is an
overview of the effort St. Nicholas has been
supporting this past six weeks. God bless all those
who generously contributed!

- ST NICHOLAS DAY LUNCHEON –
Our annual St. Nicholas Day luncheon will be held on
December 18th
. We will sing carols, drink hot chocolate,
have a rousing game of musical chairs, and as always,
enjoy a visit from St. Nicholas. We will also have a
raffle of fun items to help defray the ingredient costs of
the Cookie Walk.
LUNCHEON COST: $15 for adults;
$5 for ages 13 – 15 and
FREE for children 12 and under
It is very important that if you are planning on being at
the luncheon that you let us know by signing up on the
sheet located on the bulletin board. We need to get a
good estimate of the number of people and specifically
the number of children. Thank you for your cooperation
and we look forward to seeing you at this fun day at 10th
Street.

KERMEŠ THANK YOU
First and foremost, let us thank His Grace, Bishop Gregory of Nyssa for traveling to New York to celebrate
Liturgy with us and attend the luncheon. Thank you for your words of guidance, inspiration and giving the
football score updates to the many sports fans in the audience!
Kermeš takes many hands to make it a success and voices to sing in joyful unison. Let us all give a big thank you
to Nick Timko, Bob Zizik and the choir who sang beautifully during Liturgy with more thanks to Kevin Rusinak
for inspiring all of us with his reading of the Epistle during Liturgy. We know that you took the reading very
seriously Kevin and you did a magnificent job!
Also, our warmest appreciation to George and Justina Chobor. Without them, Kermeš
would not be the wonderful event it is and we are grateful for their generosity of time
and talent for 42 YEARS! There are many people that look forward to the pumpkin
soup all year long. The food was spectacular! Much appreciation to the men and women
who worked behind the scenes and who helped prepare, serve and work in the kitchen.
A big thank you to our organizers, Magda Matlak, Doreen Clemente, Helen Gajdos and
Justina Ryan for all their work to create flyers, sell tickets and accomplishing the
difficult task of seat placement. There were over 160 people at Kermes this year so you
know what a great job they did!
Special mention to our four young members of this year’s First Confession class as you
presented the flowers to His Grace, Bishop Gregory. You showed all of us the power of
teamwork and synchronized walking.
Everyone loves good bartenders so a big thank you goes out to Lubos Matlak, Mike
Derevjanik, and Bharat Kumta and the other valuable members of the bartending team
including Mike and Evelyn Kormanik and Kathy Matlak for selling drink tickets.
Thank you to so many people who baked and brought in desserts for us all to enjoy and
end the day on such a sweet note! Thanks who started their morning coordinating and
plating the desserts, unraveling the centerpieces and assisting in table preparation.
And finally, speaking of sweet notes, let's give another round of applause to all of the St. Nicholas Church youth,
young adults and women who sang so beautifully, also including Ruslan who brought tears to many eyes with
his tribute song to the Mothers in the audience. Also, a big thank you to our very talented “house band” -
Stephanie Salony on her accordion, Nicole Hubka on the violin (and gave a fantastic solo performance as well)
and Mr. Koss playing the clarinet. What a wonderful performance, everyone!
Enjoy the following pictures that so perfectly capture the joy of the weekend with His Grace, Bishop Gregory,
and the beautiful Annual Kermeš celebration, with thanks to Paul Krzyzanowski. There will be copies of the
pictures in the Main Hall to look view and take home thanks to Fr. William.
HIS GRACE, BISHOP GREGORY VISIT TO ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH On Sat., Nov 19th - Bishop Gregory and the 10th Street Youth enjoyed a Luncheon together and afternoon Board Game Challenge. At Vespers, St. Nicholas presented His Grace with a specially made and engraved walking stick.
