Many of you remember Fr. George Alberts, our priest at St. Nicholas for ten years. His daughter Sarah and son-in-law Chris Goldie and their two daughters survived a tornado that ripped through their Sandy Hook, CT home in the middle of May. They have been displaced due to extensive damage and have lost many of their belongings. If you would like to financially assist this family, please contribute through the GoFundMe account set-up for them @ https://www.gofundme.com/a3te74-tornado-relief-fund.

Summer is in full swing - a time for shorts, tank tops, and sandals. The question arises as to whether these types of clothes are appropriate for church services. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind when dressing for church:

Shorts should only be worn by children below the age of nine years old

Dresses should always be of a modest length

Backs and shoulders should be covered

Shirts and blouses should cover one's chest or cleavage

If you are going out to the beach or somewhere else after Liturgy, you are welcome to bring clothes to change into following the Liturgy.

The Divine Liturgy is a solemn offering to God of our very best.

This year's Parish Life Conference (PLC) is being held just hours away from GR in Sylvania, OH. This is a PLC that you won’t want to miss with great speakers such as Bishop Anthony, Philip Mamalakis (Marriage, Family Life, & Parenting) Michelle Moujaes & Anna Kallis, Archpriest Timothy Baclig (Teen & Teen Advisor Workshop), Mother Gabriella (Abbess at Holy Dormition Monastery, Robert Snyder (Christian Education), Fr. Michael Sakran (Teen SOYO speaker).

For the most updated PLC information, visit: www.mystelias.com.

Ridge Park Charter Academy, the school next door to our parish, has invited us to attend their World Party Open House, on Monday, June 18 from 5:00-6:30 PM. Ridge Park has immigrant and refugee children from over 40 countries that live in Camelot. This is a great opportunity for us to connect with the people in our community, so join in the celebration and learn about the heritage of their school families! Sample food from around the world. Bring your family and friends to enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, musical entertainment and much more!

We have the opportunity again this year to staff 20-25 volunteer positions at the “Let’s Go to Bat for Kids” baseball game fundraiser at Fifth Third Ballpark on June 21 at 5 PM. If you are not attending the PLC in Sylvania, please considering volunteering for this rewarding event, which benefits the foster care and adoption programs of Catholic Charities West Michigan, helping to build strong families in our community.

Our parish will paint foster care children’s faces, help run the raffle, do children's crafts and work at the registration desk. All volunteers will get a free dinner and an event T-shirt. This is an incredibly fun and rewarding event! Sign up on the volunteer roster located on the Parishioners’ table in the Narthex or email Greg Storey: [email protected].

There will be an engaging talk by Fr. Hans Jacobse, an Orthodox priest with decades of service, who will talk about his own pastoral experience with young men. He will talk about this crucially important topic that is for the entire family--with ample time allowed for audience questions. The speaking event takes place on Tuesday, June 19 from 7-8 PM at the Action Institute/WMCAT building (98 E. Fulton St.). Admission is free.

We will embark on Wednesday, August 15 for our yearly pilgrimage to Holy Dormition Orthodox Monastery at Rives Junction. We will need a count of those who will be traveling with us by Sunday, July 1 to determine transportation. There is a sign-up sheet on the Parishioners' table in the Narthex for you to reserve your spot. This is a great opportunity for families and for anyone wishing to visit the monastery.

Date: Wednesday, August 15 Departure: 8 AM from St. Nicholas Schedule: Divine Liturgy at 10 AM and the Holy Unction Service at 2:30 PM. The bookstore will be open as well as the prayer garden and grounds Lunch: Provided by the Monastery Cost: Depends on transportation Arrival: 6 PM at St. Nicholas

FELLOWSHIP GROUPS

On Thursday, June 28, the forerunners are doing a service project at St. Nicholas for The Kids’ Food Basket. We will have our usual noon luncheon and then work on this project. The project is simple so that everyone can participate. Please plan to attend and assist with this deserving cause. Mary K. Hoodhood will be in attendance as well! RSVP to Eileen Adolphson.

THIS WEEK’S ACTIVITIES

CONFESSION: HEALING FOR THE SOUL

Every Christian feels a natural yearning of the heart towards God, a true desire to taste the sweetness of communion, of being with Him as He created us to be. But the impurity of our hearts - full of the weight of passions, conflicts, and fears—bars the way. Yet, there is a cure for the weight of sin which burdens the heart and soul of each one of us and afflicts the conscience, keeping us from that longed-for inner peace and from peace with our neighbors and loved ones. That cure is the Mystery of Repentance, Holy Confession.

Our Faith prescribes a minimum of four occasions that the faithful should go to confession: During the Nativity Fast, Great Lent, the Apostle's Fast (now until June 29), and the Dormition Fast.

Confessions are heard after Saturday Vespers or by contacting Fr. Michael for an appointment Tuesdays-Fridays. Booklets to assist you in preparing for confession are available on the Parishioners' table or @ https://stnicholasgr.com/confession/
