New Initiative St. Monica Pre-K Program
For many years the Sisters of Presentation of Mary have provided a wonderful pre-school program for the children in Methuen and surrounding areas. As of this year, they can no longer do that, so the Presentation of Mary pre-school program will be ending. St. Monica School is happy to announce that they
will be opening a pre-k for 2016/2017 school year. We are excited to provide a Catholic based pre-k program for the residents of Methuen and surrounding areas. We would like to thank the Sisters of PMA for their service to early childhood education all these years. If you are interested in enrolling your child in the new pre-school program at St. Monica School, please contact Sharon Tully in the School Office at 978-686-1801.

FROM FR. Bill
Welcome Father Tom Gignac - Thank you for reminding us of our gifts It is with great joy that the Collaborating Parishes of Saint Monica and Saint Lucy welcome Father Tom Gignac to join us for two masses of thanksgiving this weekend and next. Father Gignac is celebrating the 11:30 am Mass this weekend at Saint Monica and the 4pm on Saturday, May 28th at Saint Lucy Parish. After each of these two masses there will be an opportunity to gather with Father Gignac for light refreshments, to receive a blessing from him and to thank him for his service to our communities. Father met with Cardinal O’Malley on Friday night to learn of his new priestly assignment and will be sharing that news with us this weekend. It is truly an honor for our parishes that Father Gignac was sent to us in the later stages of his seminary formation. It shows that the Cardinal and his assistants at the seminary have faith that our two parishes are a healthy place for a seminarian to grow in his vocation. We are greatly indebted to our former pastor, Monsignor Bill Fay, for accepting and welcoming Father Gignac and for the fine mentoring that he provided to Father Gignac. Going to the Cathedral to be with Father Gignac and his classmates was a beautiful reminder for all priests of the day that each of us laid down our lives in service to God and his people. It always feels new again, saying mass and hearing confessions, after being present for the ordination of new men with the oils still fresh on their hands. The ordination is a special day for each priest to be thankful for the gift he has received from God and to look back over the years with a spirit of thanksgiving. On Saturday, August 10, 2013, I attended mass with my parents and my siblings at St. Lawrence Church in Brookline on the 50th anniversary of their wedding. It was a Saturday just as it was in 1963. Even the priest was the same! Fr. John Nichols, fresh out of the seminary in those days, was back to lead us in prayer and bless my parents again. Every time I preach at a wedding mass, though the spotlight is on the bride and groom, especially the bride, I am keenly aware that I am preaching to many couples who have been married for years. In any committed life challenges come, days can seem long and heavy and we can be tempted to let our difficulties crowd out our consciousness of the gift we have received. When I sit after delivering those homilies I don’t think of the bride and groom, I pray for those couples that may be struggling, that perhaps they heard something that will encourage them to invest in their marriage and appreciate the spouse and family God has given them and to forgive one another with a humble spirit. This weekend, Father Gignac reminds me that I am blessed to be a priest. It feels new again this morning to say “this is my body” and “this is my blood.” I pray that regardless of our specific vocation each one of us will give thanks today for the life to which God has called us and that once again our love for each other, and our love for Jesus in the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist, will feel new again. May God bless Father Tom Gignac and God’s holy people who will be blessed to receive him. Fr. Bill
