A T O R O N T O C H R I S T M A S T R A D I T I O N

O n the first day of school in 1937, eighteen boys gathered in a single

classroom in the diocesan office building at 67 Bond Street, Toronto, to study singing, piano, theory and academics under the tutelage of composer and Archdiocesan Director of Music, John Edward Ronan, a priest from Colgan, Ontario. They were the first pupils of the Schola Cantorum of St. Michael’s Cathedral, which grew year by year to become St. Michael’s Choir School: a full elementary and secondary school serving grades three to twelve. During its remarkable 81 years, the Choir School has earned an international reputation for its distinctive learning environment that integrates an enriched academic program with a lively ministry of sacred music.

St. Michael’s Choir School is a unique collaboration between the Archdiocese of Toronto and the Toronto Catholic District School Board. With an enrollment of 260 boys, the Choir School offers a complete curriculum

of academic studies, including extended French, language, social sciences, mathematics and science. In addition, through an engaging enrichment program, students can broaden their studies beyond the traditional curriculum and classroom setting. The boys are also encouraged to participate in the Choir School’s robust athletics program and have the opportunity to take on a variety of leadership roles in clubs and community service projects to foster a well-rounded educational experience.

Liturgical music is at the centre of the Choir School. St. Michael’s is one of only six choir schools in the world affiliated with the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome. Each student participates in one of the school’s four choirs. Every weekend for ten months of the year, the Junior and Senior Choirs (grades five through twelve) provide the service of music at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica. All students study piano and theory, and have an option to study other instruments.

St. Michael’s Choir School has been recording since the 1940s, presenting repertoire in a variety of styles, from Renaissance polyphony to 20th century Canadian music, in both sacred and secular genres. Eleven albums are currently available, as well as a concert DVD called Wonderful Peace and documentary,

Into the Mystery, which chronicles the Choir School’s history and its 2013 pilgrimage to Italy. Our boys can also be heard on alumnus Matt Dusk’s CD Old School Yule, and Heather Rankin’s Imagine.

It has also been an exciting year for the School’s Alumni Association, which built on the work done by the ad-hoc executive committee that was struck in 2012, developing new initiatives, expanding its social media presence and web presence, building an Alumni Association Choir, as well as hosting events such as June Jazz Jam, and the Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament in support of scholarships and bursaries. The Alumni Association continues to provide support to the School and a remarkable network of professional musicians continue to blaze trails in both sacred and secular music, including such well-known names as Stephen Hegedus, Michael Colvin, Matt Dusk, Robert Pomakov and Michael Schade. In fact, every time you attend a Canadian opera, concert, or stage presentation, chances are there is an SMCS alumnus among the performers, and alumni voices can be heard raised in song at Masses all over the country.

Touring has always been a key part of the St. Michael’s Choir School student experience. As far back as an overnight trip to Ottawa in 1946,

boys have performed in parishes and concert halls across Canada, the United States and Europe. In the spring of 2018, the Senior Choir visited London, Detroit, and Windsor where they had the privilege of singing Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and spent a day working and performing with the Amabile Choir of London. In July, the Junior Choir participated in Podium, Choral Canada’s National Conference and Festival in St. John’s, Newfoundland. They sang Mass at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, and performed at a number of venues in St. John’s. Tours allow the boys to share their gifts with diverse communities, and offer unparalleled opportunities for them to experience other cultures. In addition tours help strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that are built at St. Michael’s Choir School beginning with the earliest grades, and lasting throughout their lives as maturing students and alumni.

The Choir School has an excellent catalogue of recordings both for Christmas and other seasons, as well as two DVDs and a history book. These can be purchased in the foyer before and after the concert, and during intermission.

Personent HodiePiae Cantiones – 1582 arr. Lara Hoggard (1915–2007)

Let youthful voices resound today joyfully praising Him who is born for us, who is given unto us by the most high God, and brought forth from a Virgin. He is born in the world, is wrapped in swaddling cloths, and placed in a manger in a stable of beasts. He is the Ruler over all things. (The Prince of Darkness thus has lost his prey!)

Three wise men come, bearing gifts. They have found the babe by following a little star. Adoring the Lord, they offer Him gold, incense and myrrh. Let all the young choristers now sing as did the angels, praising Him who has come into the world: “Glory to God in the highest!”

—translation, Lara Hoggard

O Magnum MysteriumMorton Lauridsen (b. 1943)

O great mystery, and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord, lying in their manger!

Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

Pueri ConciniteJohann Ritter von Herbeck ( 1831–1877 )

Sing together, children, sing songs to the newborn King; in pious tones, say: He who was born of Mary appears. Now we see fulfilled the word of Gabriel: Eya, eya! The Virgin has given birth to God, as the divine mercy willed. Today, appears, appears in Israel. To the Virgin Mary is born the King! Alleluia.

Ave Maria Anton Bruckner (1824–1896 )

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen.
