“Building a Bridge to the Future” 2016-2018 Parish Pastoral Plan

For the last nine months, all parishes in the Diocese have been participating in a pastoral planning process, arising out of Synod 2014, building on the good works already present, responding to challenges to be ad-dressed, and laying out a roadmap for parish vitality. Members of our parish Planning Task Force have identi-fied priorities on which the parish will focus in the coming two years. Synod 2014 identified five pastoral challenges areas: Liturgy and Worship, Family Life, Evangelization, Leadership, and Catechesis and Education. In addition, Bishop Caggiano asked each parish to look at the following three administrative areas: Finances, Buildings and Facilities, and Community Life. Parishes were asked to choose two of the five pastoral challenge areas, and one of the three administrative areas. This week, I am pleased to present in the insert the priorities’ areas, rationale and action steps for the two pastoral challenges, identified by the Planning Task Force, and approved by Bishop Caggiano. Next week, I will present the priority area, rationale and action steps for the administrative area. Additional details about the pastoral plan for the parish are available through members of the Planning Task Force and will be available on our website next week. All pastoral plans across the Diocese will be posted in December on the Diocesan website: www.bridgeportdiocese/strategic-planning/home. In a special way, I would like to thank the Planning Task Force members who gave so generously of their time and effort over the last nine months to work on this plan:

Frank J. Gilbride, Chair Fr. Richard D. Murphy Terry Goodwin Carol R. James Michael Nedder Dorothy Riera Barbara Ripp Liza Sama John E. Schmeltzer III Roni Schmitz Mary Ellen Tiernan

We have great reason to hope for the future of our Diocese and Saint Michael the Archangel Parish. I urge all of us to become actively involved in efforts to fulfill the goals established by the Planning Task Force. Our plan is a work in progress. At the end of the first year, we will evaluate the goals and make revisions as ob-jectives are met and other needs arise. It is also envisaged that at the end of the first year, the parish Pastoral Council will then take over the contin-ued implementation and monitoring of the pastoral plan for the second year. However, so as not to duplicate the activities and meetings of the Pastoral Task Force in the first year, the current Pastoral Council will only next meet in May 2017 at the annual meeting to elect the new members of the Pastoral Council. The current Pastoral Council has, in the intervening time, approved and adopted an Amended and Restated Bylaws as of October 19, 2016 and which is available on our website. The Bylaws are to replace the Articles of Association for the Council previously in force. The Bylaws have been amended & restated in response to the recent activities of the Synod and to expand and define the Council’s objectives and responsibilities. In addition, membership has been expanded and provision is made to ensure broad representative membership on the Council. May God continue to bless this parish and all members of the parish community, Fr. Ian

Pastoral Plan for Saint Michael the Archangel Parish Pastoral Challenge #1 to be addressed: Family Life

Rationale: We recognize the need to augment and strengthen the spiritual bonds between the Parish and inactive Parishioners to evangelize parents to share their relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church, with their children, many of whom attend public and private non-Catholic schools. Parents must be afforded further education in their faith as the first catechists of their children.

Goal to be achieved: Expand the formation, education and evangelization of Parish families.

a. Action Step# 1 to achieve Goal: Mine the Parish database to obtain a better understanding of and to develop an in-house analysis of the Parish demographics, including the ages and ethnicity of Parish families, to assist in developing targeted family programs for the Parish.

b. Action Step #2 to achieve Goal: Based on mining the Parish data, determine interest in engaging other segments of the Parish, including the establishment of a Parish Men’s Association to strengthen the spiritual bond of unity among its members. Outreach to Parishioners and non-Parishioners in the Greenwich Community.

Pastoral Challenge #2 to be addressed: Liturgy and Worship

Rationale: We recognize the need to enhance a welcoming environment of prayer and worship for existing, new and returning Parishioners to create a more vibrant Faith Community rooted in Jesus, and to offset the exodus of Parishioners migrating from the Parish Community.

Goal to be achieved: Increase registered Parishioners by 5% over the next two years, maintain and increase participation in the Parish functions – augment, expand and strengthen Parish communications/outreach to be more welcoming and “invite” more people in the greater community to come to our Parish.

a. Action Step# 1 to achieve Goal: Enhance, maintain and supplement the upgraded

Parish Website. Establish a Welcoming Committee for outreach to new Parishioners and former Parishioners: including (i) a welcome packet for new families; (ii) personal invitations to former Parishioners and marginalized Catholics “to come back” to the Parish; (iii) have greeters at Sunday Mass and other Sacramental celebrations; and (iv) host coffees after Mass to encourage involvement, participation and volunteerism.

b. Action Step #2 to achieve Goal: Continue the revitalization of our liturgy and worship by our Pastor Father Ian and Father Richard by: (i) building an improved music ministry; (ii) encouraging continued involvement in liturgical ministries, with special attention to the diversity of our community; and (iii) collaborate with other Greenwich Parishes to foster an open, inviting and welcoming environment to the Greenwich Community to engage and participate in the life of our Parish.
