God’s gift... we often use that phrase as a put down: “that person thinks they’re Gods gift. “ I’ve been reading John 17 lately and something surprised me. Did you know that Jesus thinks of you as ‘God’s gift’ to him? We often wonder what God thinks of us, does he love us? can he love us? What does he really think when I come to

him - anger, annoyance, boredom? Well Jesus says it: 6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me” Jesus loves us as a treasured possession; a gift to keep and cherish. Sometimes we may question it, but we need to remember, Jesus never questions it, he gave up everything he had, because he loves us who have been given to him. Have a blessed one Pastor Fin Klein

Uniform - Winter The chilly mornings are heralding the news that winter is coming! The uniform ‘changeover’ period is complete and students should now be wearing their winter school uniform each day. If there is some reason why a child cannot meet the expectations of the uniform policy, this should be communicated to the school and approval for a short -term exemption should be sought. Students are asked to be mindful that any jewellery they wear meets the uniform requirements and all students (boys or girls) whose hair reaches their shoulders or long fringe covers their face, must tie their hair back. If you have questions about uniform requirements please look at the policy on our school website under ‘News/Publications’, or contact the school office.

COVID-19 Update With the news of zero active cases in South Australia, hope continues to build that we will be able to get back to a ‘normal’ way of functioning soon. For now though, access to school buildings and classrooms continues to be restricted to staff and students only. We thank parents

for their cooperation with this and acknowledge that it makes impromptu communications with teachers more difficult. Teachers are very aware of this and will respond to emails and calls as soon as possible. Our school is taking advice from the Association for Independent Schools who are in daily contact with the SA Department of Health. School restrictions will be revoked once we receive specific advice from the Department of Health allowing it. While it is easy to become complacent, we ask families to continue to be mindful of social distancing, particularly in the playground at the end of the day. Teachers are now able to meet with families after school hours as long as we maintain room density and social distancing requirements. Some teachers have also been conducting ‘zoom’ meetings with parents who do not wish to come into the school. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need to set up a meeting with a staff member.

IB Learner Profile As an IB World school we promote and support the development of ten “Attributes of the Learner”. The encouragement of working on these attributes are woven through our learning opportunities and celebrated verbally and with certificates at assembly. Over the coming terms we will share more about these attributes through the newsletter.

I know that I don’t spell well, so I have a range of strategies that I use to help me when I am attempting a new word, or trying to edit one that looks wrong. Each of us have different strengths and abilities in learning. We need to provide ourselves and children time to be reflective about learning. Reflection can be useful in the classroom setting, at home or around relationships within a social setting. When working through social differences, using the following questions can aid the reflection process.

• What happened?

• What were you thinking at the time?

• What have you thought about since?

• Who has been affected by what you did? In what way? • What do you think you need to do to make things better?

(Centre for Restorative Justice) These questions allow the person answering to think and come to conclusions themselves about how they could improve their behaviour and learning; but always with encouragement and support. Where have you been reflective lately? How can we are parents and teachers model reflective behaviour for the children in our care?

Active Travel Day Friday 15 May Despite the frosty morning, almost 150 of our students walked, rode or scooted to school for Active Travel Day. Active Travel Day is something that we do each term to encourage students to commute to school in active ways. This term the day coincided with National Walk to School Day, an annual event designed to raise awareness of safe travel to school. Since St Michael’s partnership with Way2Go began last year, we have noticed a considerable increase in the number of students who travel to school actively.

Exclusion from childcare, preschool, school and work The spread of certain infectious diseases can be reduced by excluding a person, known to be infectious, from contact with

others who are at risk of catching the infection.

The following are recommended minimum periods of exclusion from school, preschool and childcare centres for cases of,

and contact with, infectious diseases, based on guidelines issued by the National Health and Medical Research Council in

2005 and the online Australian Immunisation Handbook.

These guidelines can also be applied to the general community and most workplaces. A childcare worker with gastroen-

teritis (also known as ‘gastro’: inflammation of the intestinal (bowels)), should not return to work for at least 24 hours

after vomiting or diarrhoea have stopped.

Exclusion Periods

The need for exclusion depends on:

The ease with which the infection can be spread

The ability of the infected person to follow hygiene precautions

Whether or not the person has some immunity to the infection (either vaccination or past infection)

To a lesser extent, the severity of the disease.

Definitions

Exclusion periods are based on the time that a person with a specific disease or condition might be infectious to

others.

Non-exclusion means there is not a significant risk of transmitting infection to others. A person who is not excluded

may still need to remain at home because he or she does not feel well.

Disease or condition Exclusion of case

Chickenpox Exclude until all blisters have dried (usually 5 days)

Cold sores

herpes simplex type 1, fe-ver blisters

Young children and others unable to comply with good hygiene practices should be excluded while lesion is weeping. Lesions should be covered by a dressing where possible.

Common cold Exclusion is not necessary, but a person with a cold should stay home until he or she feels well.

Conjunctivitis Exclude until discharge from eyes has stopped (unless a doctor has diagnosed non-infectious conjunctivitis).

Diarrhoea (no organism identified)

Exclude until no diarrhoea for 24 hours.

Hand, foot and mouth dis-ease

Exclude until all blisters dry.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection

Head lice Exclude until appropriate treatment has commenced.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses

Exclude until well (at least 5 days for adults and 7-10 days for children).

Measles Exclude until 4 days after the onset of the rash.

CHALLENGE “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly”

Robert F Kennedy

Junior Learning Community In Christian Studies the JLC classes have begun unpacking the central idea: Christians are called to love and serve all

people. Whenever we want to find out about God or Christianity (or anything really), we check out the Bible! We worked

together to look up a whole bunch of verses from different parts of the Bible and shared our verses with each other. The

Bible is God’s Word, and he certainly does have a lot to say to us like:

• Love your enemies and pray for those who hurt you (wow, that can be hard!)

• Give cheerfully

• Christians will be known by their love for others

• If anyone wants to be first, they need to actually put themselves LAST and act like a servant to everyone

• Don’t just talk about love – put your love into action

• Value others more than ourselves

• If we serve even the least important person it is like we’re serving God himself

• Be humble, just like Jesus was when he was on earth (he washed his disciples’ feet like a servant and then died

on the cross).

And that’s just the start!

We’ve had a lot of fun getting to know how to use our Bibles and finding out how God wants people to treat each

other. We can’t wait to see what’s next…and maybe even put our love into action (perhaps even secretly so that no one

knows what we’re doing!). It could even happen to you!

Worship in the Cloud During Covid-19 we are ‘Worshiping in the Cloud’. Through our weekly Worship Offering money is donated to ALWS & the creation of a watering well for people in Cambodia. The challenge is to see which class can raise the most money. If every student donated .10c each week for the remainder of the year we would raise $465.60. Lets see if we as a School Community can surpass this goal. Check the office display and each newsletter for our progress
