Fr. Jerry’s Corner – April 5, 2020 – Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Similar to a saying about Lent that has surfaced on social media—“This is the Lentiest Lent I have ever Lented”—this may be the Holiest Holy Week we have ever Holied. I hope it is. And I hope you are still praying for our health care professionals who are on the front line: Dr. Scott Pottratz who is an ER physician, his daughter Sarah Henriquez who is a PA and also works in an Emergency Room, Jennifer Wagner who is an Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner, Betty Dixon who is Nursing Director of Public Health for all of coastal Georgia, Lerma Pierce, Jane Bock, Theresa Gorby, my niece, Maura Sweeney, who are all nurses and my nephew, Marc Mongeau, who is a pulmonary Doctor. This week I’ve also asked you to be mindful in your prayer of those who are at risk in our nursing homes, especially the Catholic residents at Oceanside Nursing Home: Jim Adams, Virginia Caceres, Brenda Helmey, David Bell, and Kathy Walls. For this coming week I’d like to suggest that you pray for those you are at risk in our grocery stores. We’d be in a real fix if they weren’t at their posts. So, Keep Mike Hosti and his crew at Tybee Market who do such a great job in your prayers. And remember too Blake Young who is at the Publix on Whitemarsh Island. The social butterflies in our faith community are especially in my prayers during this holiest of weeks. The extraverted among us no doubt are having a very hard time with the stay at home orders. So, I would really encourage them and us all to focus on our spiritual well-being this week. Use this downtime to get a better rhythm and consistency to your prayer life. I read a wonderful essay this week by Alan Lightman in which he observed, “the sunlight and soil that nourish my inner self are solitude and personal reflection. When I listen to my inner self, I hear the breathing of my spirit. Those breaths are so tiny and delicate, I need stillness to hear them, I need slowness to hear them. I need vast silent spaces in my mind. I need privacy. Without the breathing and the voice of my inner self, I am a prisoner of the frenzied world around me. I am a prisoner of my job, my money, the clothes in my closet. What am I? I need slowness and quiet to ponder that question.” Don’t be afraid of turning off all the sound and the things that distract us from our loneliness. God is with you in the silence. Be intentional about connecting with God this week so it may be the Holiest Holy Week we have ever Holied. Alan Lightman ended his essay with these words: “At some point, the coronavirus will pass, or at least recede into the haze of other viruses and ailments. There will be (and already is) staggering suffering and loss of life, enormous economic devastation. That tragedy cannot be overstated. For years, we will be trying to rebuild the broken world. But perhaps the slower lifestyle in these months can help put the pieces back together. And perhaps a more contemplative, deliberate way of living can become permanent.” Be deliberate about your prayer life this week. Pray the rosary or the divine mercy chaplet. Read a psalm or two each day or read the Passion or even an entire Gospel. St. Matthew’s Gospel is the one we encounter in most of our Sunday liturgies this year. Go online and subscribe to one of the many daily Catholic devotionals. Bishop Robert Barron or Fr. Richard Rohr are two popular ones. Or learn about one of our great spiritual traditions online. I am a “mutt” when it comes to my spiritual life. Blessed Charles de Foucauld and St. Ignatius of Loyola are the two strongest influences. But Benedictine, Carmelite, and now here on Tybee, Franciscan also play minor roles in my Spiritual life. Use this downtime wisely and prayerfully!

And while our living streaming numbers have been good, I hope more and more of you will figure out that you can go to the bottom of our parish website and simply by clicking on the image of St. Michael, you’ll be able to virtually attend Holy Week Services.

Holy Week Live Streaming Times

Palm Sunday – 9:30am Blessed Palms will be available outside church from 11am to 5pm. Please use good hygiene. If

you pick up too much, just keep it. Don’t put it back on the table.

Sacred Paschal Triduum

Thursday of the Lord’s Supper – 5pm Have a nice dinner afterwards to celebrate the end of Lent and the institution of the Eucharist.

Friday of the Passion of the Lord – 12pm Stations will start at noon and then until 3pm we have “slow” TV as I pray silently before the Crucifix with scripture and prayers at 1:30 and 2:30. Can you watch with me? Remember Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence.

Easter Vigil in the Holy Night – 8pm This our most important liturgy of the entire year! Please tune in. This year it will be abbreviated so if you’ve never experienced it, it’s a good time to Get a sense of its beauty and power. We’ll receive Jennifer Wagner into full communion with us at this Mass.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection 9:30am

End Lent with some good almsgiving. The Holy Father has postponed the Good Friday Collection for the support of Christians in the Holy Land until September, but I hope you can give the CRS’s Rice Bowl Collection this week. Catholic Relief Services carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas. They do so much good throughout the world and this collection helps in a big way to support their relief efforts. This week I’d ask you to count the money in your CRS Rice Bowl and make out a check to Catholic Relief Services and in the memo field put CRS Rice Bowl.

Mail to: Catholic Relief Services

CRS Rice Bowl P.O. Box 17090

Baltimore, Maryland 21297-0303

So many of you have been good about mailing in your offertory or putting it in the rectory front door mail slot. Thank you for supporting your faith community in these trying times. As I get a few years away from retirement, I trust you’ll be generous to the Priest Retirement Collection.

Salt Island is the Restaurant of the Week for take outs. They are closed on Tuesday.
