“LETTER FROM THE RECTORY” We are all immensely grateful to Elizabeth Parish and Donald Yonge, who
have been contributing monthly pieces for this page every month.
This is a tale of two young women: both gave birth to one who was to
become a king; both found themselves unexpectedly in positions of huge
significance. Both demonstrated devotion to their calling and showed
remarkable examples of faithfulness and devotion to duty. Who were they?
Well, two days in April provide the clues.
The first young woman was born on 21st April; she is our Sovereign
Majesty Queen Elizabeth, who turns 90 this year. Few would quibble with
her steadfastness and example of duty following the early death of her father
– and for more years than any other of our monarchs. Long may she continue
to reign.
Who was the second (very) young woman? She was Mary, the
mother of Jesus! In the Church year, which compresses so much
extraordinary life and events into 365 days, 4th
April will be the Feast of the
Annunciation, which commemorates the time when, in stark contrast to the
Queen, this girl living in very humble circumstances in a small corner of a
small obscure land heard the astonishing news that she would be the bearer of
the Saviour of the world. Yet in common with our Queen gave, and still
gives us an example of obedience to her God and to her calling.
For thanks to her, we can rejoice at this season of Easter; no, not
because we love chocolate, but because of what her son, Jesus, did for us. He
took all the pain and suffering that the evils of this world can throw at us and
nailed them to the Cross; through his death and glorious Resurrection, he is
now King of Heaven - and we may be assured that through our faith in him
we are now citizens of that kingdom – but also his friends.
Elizabeth and I hope you had a blessed and happy Easter, and may
know the love of the Risen Christ in your lives.
Donald Yonge

Churchwardens’ Notes – February On Mothering Sunday we welcomed Bishop Martin of Chichester
who celebrated Holy Communion and distributed posies of spring flowers to
the children and adults to present to their mothers. Many thanks to the ladies
who spent Saturday morning tying the beautiful bunches of flowers for
distribution at this service.
At the end of the service the Bishop announced the appointment of
the Reverend James Campbell as our new Rector. James comes to us from a
five parish benefice at Lavington near Devizes. He has had many years'
experience of ministry in rural parishes, was the Rural Dean of Alton for six
years and an Honorary Canon of Winchester Cathedral. His service of
induction will take place on Wednesday, 6th July at 7.30pm. We look
forward to welcoming James and his wife Mary to Withyham and ask for
your prayers for the success of his ministry among us.
At the time of writing we are in the midst of the Holy Week and once
again would like to express our gratitude to Elizabeth Parish and Donald
Yonge for all their tireless work in organising our services both now and
throughout this interregnum. It is a great credit to them that so many have
continued to attend our church.
Please note the date for the annual fete has been changed to
Saturday, 23rd July, a week later than originally planned.

WITHYHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY April 2016
We have two events on the programme in April. One of course is the
Spring Show on Saturday the 9th
April. There still may be some late
narcissi to be had so please think about entering them. If you would like a
schedule of all the classes to be shown please contact me (01892 661940) or
Helen (01892 771044) and we will get one to you. It is an open show which
means you do not have to be a member to enter.
The next event is our 20% off all plant buys (excluding sale items) at
Royal Mires on Saturday the 16th
April from 9am to 12 noon. You will
have to bring along your membership card to get the discount of course.
The committee and I are hoping that some of you are thinking about helping
out on the committee. I can tell you that we have someone who has offered
to take over the duties of Treasurer but we still need a new chairman.
The list for the first trip to Waterperry gardens on Saturday the
4th
June is now open so make sure you get your name down. The cost will
be £20 which includes the entrance fee.
Garden tips for this month:
1. Lawns have taken a beating this winter, so now is the time to sow
lawn seed to cover the bare patches, simply loosen the soil removing
perennial weeds, flatten the soil and water, then sprinkle over the seed, rake
to spread the seed evenly and cover with netting.
2. If your plants suffer from vine weevil, now is the time to get
some nematodes. Nematodes are a natural predator of vine weevil that you
mix with water. Water the compost around the plant and the nematodes will
search for the vine weevil grubs and destroy them.
3. Remove any moss growing on the surface of containers and
garden and clean off patios and paths with a high powered hose to stop them
being slippery.
There are a million and one things to do in the garden at this time of
year but we hope that you will put by some time for the Spring Show and
future events.
For any further information please ring either myself on 01892
661940 or Helen on 01892 771044 or Em ail at [email protected].

Choosing a computer Well-chosen machines should last you for up to 7 years. Here are the
key questions that should guide you to choose the right type for you.
Will you use the machine in one place? A desktop with its upgrade
potential may be for you. Otherwise choose a portable device: laptop or
tablet, or even a hybrid combination.
For Portable devices: what size of screen do you want?
Do you want to edit photos and create documents? If yes then
probably avoid a tablet as they are less good for extended typing.
Apple or Windows? Apple is much more expensive but generally
easy to maintain. Do check that it will run the software you want.
Budget: Good general-purpose Windows machines start around £350.
Superior components weigh-in at around £550. Bells, whistles and the
better screens arrive at £850+. Apple laptops begin at £750 and run to
£2,000+. Second hand machines need an article to themselves.

KEEP PRACTISING During a golf competition in about 1965, a member of the media had
the audacity to suggest to Gary Player that he had been “lucky” playing a
particular golf shot. Player replied: “You know it is quite amazing. I have
discovered that the more I practise, the luckier I get.”
Isn’t that so true of life? Have you ever thought that your and I
become, ultimately, what we practise?
Practise a certain pattern of thought and that becomes your prevailing
thought.
Practise thoughts of prejudice, and you will become a prejudiced
person.
Practise thoughts of hate – “I hate this…I hate that…I hate him
…I hate her” and you will become a hate-filled person.
Practise thoughts of criticism and you will find fault in everything and
everyone.
Practise thoughts of joy and always looking for the good in others,
rather than the bad. Then you will encourage joy and confidence in others.
The more we practise, the more successful we will be in the game of
life and it will have nothing to do with luck.
A little seed lay on the ground
And soon began to sprout.
Now which of all the flowers around
Shall I, it thought, come out?
The seed could be heard saying: “I don’t care to be a rose; a rose has
thorns. I don’t care to be a lily; a lily is too colourless. I don’t care to be a
violet; a violet is too small, and it grows too close to the ground.”
And so it criticised each flower,
That supercilious seed,
Until it woke one summer hour
And found itself a weed!
Paul writing to the Church at Ephesus said: “Be imitators of God and
live a life of love.” (Ephesians 5:1-2)
Begin today to practise, practise and keep on practising to live a life
of love. (with grateful thanks to Highland Reflections - Rev Jim Lamont's "Thought for the day" broadcasts)

WITHYHAM PARISH COUNCIL (WPC) – March 2016. GROOMBRIDGE POST OFFICE: The lady who runs the Post Office retires
later this year. There is a possibility that, after that, Groombridge may not have a
Post Office. WPC has been seeking ways of retaining a post office service in
Groombridge.
THE A 264 ‘MISSING LINK’: Young people from Blackham, walking or
cycling along a dangerous road without a sidewalk to use the sportsground and
pavilion in Ashurst (in which WPC has invested.) are putting themselves in
considerable danger. A proposal was put forward in July 2014 to lay a 600m
footpath alongside the A264 linking two footpaths that already exist to enable
youngsters to cycle and walk down to the sports pavilion and the youth club,
safely. It was agreed that WPC entered a Community Match scheme whereby the
community would share construction costs with ESCC. Costs were estimated at
£67,000, and a community contribution of around £32,000 would need to be
found. WPC identified £10,000 from its Reserves, £15,000 was secured through
grants and Blackham village began to raise the rest through quizzes, coffee
mornings, firework celebrations and the Raft race. However, unbeknown to WPC,
the Community Match scheme did not have a dedicated design engineer to carry
out the design but has been fitted in with other projects such as this within the
ESCC’s Capital programme. This has delayed the design by 8 months! ESCC
have only recently identified that the existing kerb stones along the A264 - which
has a national speed limit (60mph) – may not be high enough in terms of health
and safety for a footpath to be laid and are commissioning an independent safety
audit. If this risk assessment recommends higher kerb stones, the cost of the
project will rise from £67,339 to £105,580. ESCC are therefore considering
withdrawing support for this project after all the community’s and parish
council’s investment in time and energy. It might therefore be out of our reach
and a huge disappointment to the young people of Blackham. WPC have
approached Nus Ghani MP- who has agreed to support the exploration of
alternatives.
BROADBAND – WPC is aware that Blackham is one of the rural areas which
will not be covered by the eSussex Initiative from the Government and County
funded partnership with BT. Blackham residents are concerned that they will not
now receive an upgrade If this is the case, WPC wishes to support them in
considering other solutions. WPC has approached Nus Ghani MP to raise this
with County councillors, BT etc as she highlighted adequate provision of
broadband services to be one of her priorities.
These are just a few of the issues that WPC is trying to resolve on your behalf.
Thank you for your support – it spurs us on!
Diana Kelly: Chairman.
