FED BY THE LORD Jesus’ words “This is my body” and “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” were only part of his table blessing. Jesus twice said: “Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25).

This is the good news of today’s solemnity. Like the five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord. This is not food that satisfies for only a short time, until the next meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is food for sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek did when he brought bread and wine to the returning Abraham. As children of God’s reign, we are blessed to be able to receive and share God’s gift. And we do so in the way most appropriate to our state in life—as parents, children, husbands, wives, or religious.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Once the early Christians realized that Christ’s coming in glory was delayed, there was a need to provide for the governance and everyday needs of the church. The various “orders” within the church carried forward the apostles’ ministry, but also allowed for a measure of creativity. The sacrament we call “holy orders” evolved somewhat slowly. At first, it made sense for Christians to use the forms they knew, adapting them to new situations. Synagogues, for example, were administered by a board of “elders,” translated into Greek as presbyteros. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that a system of presbyters was a normal feature of church life from earliest days. They stood in relationship to another order, that of “overseers,” translated into Greek as episkopos, giving us the English “bishops.” The bishop was the shepherd, the faithful tender of the flock, one who offered the Eucharist, forgave sins, and maintained the bond of charity. Just as the deacons were the chief advisers for the charitable life of the church, so were the presbyters meant to advise the bishop on the spiritual life of the faithful. They were trusted advisers at first, not pastors or priests as we understand those terms today. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SUMMER SATURDAY SCHEDULE Just a reminder for parishioners and visitors about the upcoming schedule change. As frequently publicized in our bulletin since last Labor Day Weekend, and as noted on the 2016 Parish Calendars, there will be a change in our Saturday schedule. In response to input received at the listening session held by the Parish Pastoral Council last summer, as well as conversations that took place at various parish functions, the Liturgy Committee, Parish Pastoral Council and Staff agreed that it would be beneficial to have the Saturday Mass held at 5 pm during the summer months, between Memorial Weekend and Labor Day Weekend. Several factors influenced the decision to try this change for Summer 2016. While many people had previously preferred the 5:30 Mass from several years ago, the change to 4 pm had been made in part to assure the comfort and safety of parishioners and visitors who were experiencing difficulty driving after dark. During the summer, when darkness is not a factor, a later Mass offers the opportunity for people to complete the work day or to enjoy seasonal activities for a longer period before getting ready for Mass. In addition, with the return of seasonal parishioners and visitors, our 5 pm Mass will offer another option to people in our immediate area, since the Saturday Mass at Most Holy Trinity is at 4 pm.

ST. MAX /OLQP DAY AT KNOEBEL’S: JULY 28 We have reserved a pavilion for Thursday, July 28th for our Parish Outing at Knoebel’s Amusement Park in Elysburg. Our altar servers will be guests of the parish; the altar servers and parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace will join us for this day of fun in the sun. There is no admission charge for the park, and you can pack or buy the food for the day. Hope you can join us—the more, the merrier! Watch for more details in future bulletins.
