August 30, 2020

Dear Friends in Christ:

On August 22, the Church celebrated “The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” Have you ever wondered how Mary received this title of Queen, as she has many other important titles? Have you had a non-Catholic Christian complain that this is not biblical and we put too much emphasis on Mary? Unfortunately, such people do not really even know the Bible since this is a biblical foundation. Yes, it is possible that some individual Catholics may put an extra emphasis on Mary. But the Church has consistently moderated an appropriate role of Mary in salvation history.

The Bible addresses since the time of King David (and other kingdoms of the Near East) that the mother of the king was called the Queen. Why was it the mother of the king and not his wife, as is our more common understanding? Well so many kings had multiple wives. King Solomon, son of David, had 700 wives (1 Kgs 11: 3). But every king has only one mother! The custom with the introduction of any new king, the queen mother was also mentioned. Plus, the mother always had a throne and a crown. (Jer. 13: 18, 20). Bathsheba’s role was “minimal” as the wife of King David (1 Kgs 1:16-17, 31), but her role was elevated to queen when her son, Solomon, became king (1 Kgs 2:19-20). The queen mother would sit to the right of the king, a place of special honor. Plus, the queen had a special intercessory role since the king would often listen to his mother (1 Kgs 2:17). So too, Mary has an intercessory role.

Jesus is both the Son of David and the King of the Jews. Mary is mentioned as “the mother of my Lord” (Lk 1:43) when visiting her kinswoman Elizabeth. A king was referred to as “Lord” in the royal court of 2 Sam 24:21. Plus Rev. 12: 1-2 states “A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.” This woman is understood to symbolize both God’s kingdom (people of Israel and now the Church) and Mary, with the child as Jesus.

Pastor’s Message p. 3

Early Church fathers and even the Council of Ephesus (431) referred to Mary as Queen, all based on this biblical practice of calling the mother of the king a queen. Artwork throughout history depicts Mary as a queen with a crown. Music also depicts the same language with the Salve Regina, Hail, Queen of Heaven, with its original text going back to about 1080. As with all Marian teachings, the truths of Mary always point back to her Son, Jesus. Mary’s role never takes away from the centrality of Christ. As Mary said at the wedding feast of Cana (Jn 2:1-11): “Do whatever he tells you.” (The above was summarized from an article “Is Mary’s Queenship Biblical,” written by Edward Sri on August 19, 2019.)

Perhaps you have noticed a reduced lighting setting prior to Mass? And the lights in the choir area are turned off for daily Mass and a reduced amount of choir lights during weekend Masses when we have no choir. Why? To be a better steward of your parish finances, especially with lower collections during this pandemic. And to extend the longevity of the light bulbs—no easy task to change the light bulbs in this church, with the necessity of renting a lift, etc. I guess I am hearing from my childhood my parents’ mantra to turn the lights out when I was not using them. So we have a few different pre-set lightings now. We believe there is sufficient lighting prior to Mass. And for many, reduced lighting encourages a more prayerful, reverent form of preparation for Mass.

Also, have you noticed anything different about the 6 altar candles in the sanctuary (altar area)? When I first arrived, I asked a few people if those 6 candles could be cleaned or something to be done to cover up the black soot lines that had formed over so many years of usage. Unfortunately, the candle wicks were all at different levels. To my great surprise, one of those people whom I consulted took the initiative to research and bought new candles since the old ones could not be cleaned. The candles appeared on August 15! These new candles are now all clean, and the wicks are now all at an equal height. Please say a prayer of thanksgiving for this very self-initiated and generous person. Thank you.

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING A bow signifies reverence & honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following: 1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being cele-brated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words “and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being un-wanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty. Mother Teresa

St. Maximilian Kolbe,

Pray for us!

Weekend Homilies are recorded & posted now on our parish webpage above the menu bar next to bulletins: https://stmaximilian.org/

Our parish logo in its sim-plicity, is rich in symbol-ism and meaning. The “M” represents Maximili-an; it also reminds us of Mary, the mother of Je-sus for whom Fr. Kolbe had such great love and devotion. It is red and white, to remind us of the

two crowns offered to the young Kolbe during a vision he had of the Blessed Virgin Mary. White represented purity and red represented martyrdom, he chose both crowns. In the cen-ter we see the triangle, representing the labels applied to the various categories of persecuted peoples during the Nazi Regime. As a political prisoner, Fr. Maximilian was made to wear a red triangle. The “M” reminds us of a martyr; a person who willingly gave up his life for the faith. St. Maximilian was a mar-tyr of charity by giving his very life for an-other prisoner. It reminds us of mercy, the virtue Fr. Kolbe showed to his fellow cap-tors at Auschwitz. The logo reminds us of an altar where our faith community gathers to partake in the celebration of the Mass. The Eucharist is the center of our Christian life -- the summit and font from which all else flows. Looking carefully, we can see the form of the flag of Poland. Fr. Kolbe’s native country. And perhaps you can see more sym-bols. It is filled with meaning. Written by Msgr. Adam McCloskey, former pastor

The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation Videos by Jeff Cavins

This 25-week study gives participants an overview of Salvation History by following 14 narrative books in the Bible. It also gives the tools to help understand the remaining books by helping contextualize where they belong in history and what was normal in the lives and culture at the time. An excellent study for beginners and people who wish to read the entire Bible. We will be holding meetings by Zoom on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm or—this is new!—on Monday mornings at 10 am. There are many useful materials to help understand the main points that come with the book. The cost of the materials is $35 but do not let payment stop you from joining us. Contact Molly Smith in the parish office or at [email protected] to register. It is still early in the study, we would love for you to JOIN US!

ATTENTION LECTORS

During this time of COVID-19, Lectors are be-ing scheduled for Masses on a weekly basis. If you are a trained Lector, and want to resume reading again at your selected Mass time, con-tact Sister Vinflora in the parish office at 281-955-7324 or [email protected].

THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramati-cally after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horri-ble, it was degrading. It was a penalty re-served only for the most wretched of crimi-nals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to vener-ate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Know Your Rights: Navigating Tenant Challenges during the Pandemic

Join this webinar for families and individuals who are facing the threat of eviction due to loss of income result-ing from the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-sponsored by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

That each of us may have the strength and courage to put Jesus first above worldly ways and material gains. “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” Matthew 16:26 St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

The parish offices will be closed next Monday, September 7th for the Labor Day holiday. May you all enjoy a safe and healthy Labor Day weekend.

Catholic Bishops’ Pro-Life Chair-man Praises Trump Administra-tion for Ensuring that U.S. Glob-al Health Assistance Does Not Promote Abortion

AUGUST 20, 2020 BY USCCB PUBLIC AF-FAIRS OFFICE

WASHINGTON–Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, chair-man of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, thanked and praised the Trump Administra-tion following the release of its second re-port showing successful implementation of an expanded Mexico City Policy aptly re-named, “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance.” The report shows that the vast majority of foreign NGOs—1,285 out of 1,340—have complied with this policy with minimal disruption of health services and no reduction in funding. “The Trump Administration deserves our praise for ensuring that U.S. global health assistance funding actually promotes health and human rights, and does not un-dermine them by promoting abortion. Kill-ing innocent and defenseless unborn chil-dren through abortion is not health care. Abortion violates an unborn child’s most basic human right, the right to life, and it also can wound the mother emotionally and physically. Americans recognize this injustice and an overwhelming majority of them oppose giving tax dollars to organiza-tions that are more committed to promoting abortion than providing health services.”
