The fact that they were fishers, meant that they were in the business of feeding people. The other element of their profession, that probably appealed to Jesus’ sense of humour, was that they had to pit their wits against the fish. “Come I’ll make you fishers of people.” The other fishing story, comes from the book of Jonah. Chapter three begins with the fish rescuing Jonah. God had called Jonah to be a “fisher of people”. Jonah was unwilling to the point of stubbornly refusing to act. His disobedience was shown up, by the obedience of the fish. It reminds us of the storm story in Mark where the disciples say, “Who is this, that the wind and sea obey him?” Having run out of excuses for avoiding the call of God, Jo- nah embarks on his missionary journey. In spite of his half-hearted proclamaon ,the people of Nineveh listen and repent. The two stories share some themes. Water, is an important image in both stories. Jonah’s passage through water symbolises, both life and death. The followers of Jesus, are called from the water, which has sustained them, to the dryness of the life of an inerant disciple. Leng go, of a known past, for an unknown future, is also a theme. Jonah was asked to preach repentance to foreigners. He resented the fact that God was concerned about non-Jews. Some of his spiritual identy was ed up in being special. The disciples leſt, not only a good livelihood but also probably subjected their families, to life on the road. Discipleship has always had a price. Mark states ,that it has been this way from the beginning. The response from the disciples was wholehearted. In following Jesus they accept not only a share in his ministry, but the mandate to connue it. The calling of two sets of brothers, seems to point to the mission of going out two-by-two, in the spreading of the good news. Companionship is of the essence of the new community. Community discernment is necessary for discipleship. A group must think deeply, on what the “Call of God” means in their own me, their own culture and with their own giſts. Patricia Stevenson rsj. Reflection…

In the Gospel today, Jesus appeared in Galilee after John the Baptist had been handed over to Herod. We are given a statement of his mission. He has come proclaiming the ‘Good News’ of God. This is a graced moment the presence of God is discernible in the midst of humanity.

Further along, are two other brothers, working from a boat, Jesus summons them as well. Mark gives us a picture of a group of men, who were in a prosperous business. The fact that they were fishers, meant that they were in the business of feeding people. The other element of their profession, that probably appealed to Jesus’ sense of humour, was that they had to pit their wits against the fish. “Come I’ll make you fishers of people.”

The other fishing story, comes from the book of Jonah. Chapter three begins with the fish rescuing Jonah. God had called Jonah to be a “fisher of people”. Jonah was unwilling to the point of stubbornly refusing to act. His disobedience was shown up, by the obedience of the fish. It reminds us of the storm story in Mark where the disciples say, “Who is this, that the wind and sea obey him?” Having run out of excuses for avoiding the call of God, Jo-nah embarks on his missionary journey. In spite of his half-hearted proclamation ,the people of Nineveh listen and repent.

The two stories share some themes. Water, is an important image in both stories. Jonah’s passage through water symbolises, both life and death. The followers of Jesus, are called from the water, which has sustained them, to the dryness of the life of an itinerant disciple. Letting go, of a known past, for an unknown future, is also a theme. Jonah was asked to preach repentance to foreigners. He resented the fact that God was concerned about non-Jews. Some of his spiritual identity was tied up in being special.

The disciples left, not only a good livelihood but also probably subjected their families, to life on the road. Discipleship has always had a price. Mark states ,that it has been this way from the beginning. The response from the disciples was wholehearted. In following Jesus they accept not only a share in his ministry, but the mandate to continue it. The calling of two sets of brothers, seems to point to the mission of going out two-by-two, in the spreading of the good news. Companionship is of the essence of the new community. Community discernment is necessary for discipleship. A group must think deeply, on what the “Call of God” means in their own time, their own culture and with their own gifts.

PARISH ASSEMBLY 2018 The wonderful enrichment of our Church of St. Maximilian Kolbe, is that it is a community of many cultures. In that regard, it is an exact model of the early Church Community that, like us, was privileged to witness the advent of the Holy Spirit.

In the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2: 1,4), we read:-

“When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked, “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galile-

ans? Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, ‘what does this mean?’ ”

It is only a very short time, since the Society of the Divine Word, also known as the Divine Word Mis-sionaries, a missionary religious congregation composed of priests and brothers (the largest missionary congregation in the Catholic Church), arrived at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, in Marsden. For many years, the Parish survived mainly because of the high dedication of its wonderful parishioners, who took extraordinary care of its ailing priest, who struggled under the heavy cross of sickness.

With the arrival of the Divine Word missionaries, the presence of the Holy Spirit became more visible. Perhaps at times, there were those of us who asked: What was wrong with the way things were? Life was comfortable then!... But, was it as good as it could have been?? Were we completely satisfied with: The Church in which we were ministers of God’s Word; The ministers of education to the young children; The extent to which our youth were involved in their own faith journey; The preparation of those who attended the RCIA program; The ministry of service to the Altar & its surrounds (eg Altar Servers, Liturgy Symbols, Flowers, etc); The ministry of the Blessed Eucharist to the Sick and Dying; The extended courses that the Lay people were invited to participate (inc. IEF program, etc.); The workshops in the Bible Timeline studies and seminars/talks by many external presenters.

Every Parishioner is invited to bring the diversity of their gifts to our Parish Assembly which will be held as follows: Day/Date : Sunday, 11 February 2018 Time : 10.30am to 12.30pm

At this assembly we will consider our vocation which is to truly witnesses to the values of being Christ-like; a diversified people, spiritually nourished and moving forward as a Community fully alive and ac-tive in the mission of evangelisation. Community fully alive and active in the mission of evangelisation.
