COLLECT OF THE DAY

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 32:22-31

The same night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.” The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.

PSALM 17:1-7,16 Exaudi, Domine

1 Hear my plea of innocence, O LORD;

give heed to my cry; * listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.

2 Let my vindication come forth from your presence; * let your eyes be fixed on justice.

3 Weigh my heart, summon me by night, * melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.

Refrain

4 I give no offense with my mouth as others do; * I have heeded the words of your lips.

5 My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; * in your paths my feet shall not stumble.

6 I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; * incline your ear to me and hear my words.

Refrain

7 Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, * O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise up against them.

16 But at my vindication I shall see your face; * when I awake, I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

Refrain

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 9:1-5

I am speaking the truth in Christ-- I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit-- I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless Hymnal 343 vss. 1 and 4

THE GOSPEL Matthew 14:13-21

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Priest The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

GOSPEL RESPONSE

THE SERMON The Rev. Christian Hawley

THE NICENE CREED BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Form III, BCP 387

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

Grant the members of our Rector Search Committee your discernment and wisdom, That by your guidance we may call a faithful pastor to shepherd our community.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

Silence. The People may add their own petitions.

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.

CONFESSION OF SIN BCP 359

The Celebrant says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

ADULT FORMATION IS BACK: FALL FOCUS ON FAITHFUL CONVERSATIONS, STARTING AUGUST 2 (9:15-10:15 AM) How can we use scripture, reason, tradition, and Christian charity as our primary sources of authority to practice healthy and meaningful conversations around race, politics, and violence? Join internationally known mediator, Jeff Jury; New Testament Scholars, Rodolfo Estrada, Ray Jordan, and Andrew Benko; Episcopal Clergy, Christian Hawley and Rhonda Rogers; Travis County Veterans Court Judge, Brad Urrutia; and many other special guests as people of faith struggle together to seek the mind of Christ in this volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. BACKPACK SUNDAY OUTREACH PROJECT Mark your calendars for Backpack Sunday on August 16 and our socially distanced Backpack Outreach Project on Saturday, August 15 from 9:00 am-12:00 pm! Backpack Sunday is an annual event where the congregation comes together during the Sunday School hour and packs backpacks, donated by parishioners, with school supplies for students in need at nearby Wooldridge Elementary. The backpacks are placed on the altar, and, during our combined service, they are blessed along with the backpacks of our children in preparation for a wonderful school year. This year things will be a little different! Our August 15 backpack packing outreach event will take place outside in the courtyard with social distancing protocols in place and masks required. To learn more about our plans for Backpack Sunday and how you can help with our outreach project, please visit https://tinyurl.com/BackpackSunday.
