Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19). Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will (Psalm 40). Your bodies are members of Christ; glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20). Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home

Shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor!

Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine.

You, of comforters the best; You, the soul’s most welcome guest;

Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe.

O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours,

And our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought,

Nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew;

On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore

In your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

The Diocese of Palm Beach is sponsoring a virtual live retreat for middle and high school teens, and their families, on Saturday, January 30, from 9:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The theme of the retreat is “Encounter,” and will feature Paul J. Kim, an international speaker who will share his hope in Christ through music and motivational talks. The fee for the retreat is $15 per person or per family. Please call Suzanne at 966-8878 for more information, or to register for the retreat, please contact the diocesan office of youth and young adult ministry at 775-9559.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Ho-ly Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

You have prepared a table before me, and how precious is the chalice that quenches my thirst. Psalm 23(22):5

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

God our Father, you will all men and women to be saved and come to the knowledge of your truth. Send workers into your great harvest that the gospel may be preached to every crea-ture and your people, gathered together by the word of life and strengthened by the power of the sacraments, may advance in the way of salvation and love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

Prayer For Peace In Our Family

Lord Jesus, be with my family. Grant us Your peace and harmony, an end to conflict and division. Gift us with the compassion to better understand each other, the wisdom and love to assist each other, and the trust and patience to live peacefully together. Grant that, through the intercession of Your mother, Mary, and St. Joseph, our family too may become a holy family, accepting each other, working together in unity, and selflessly dedicated to one other and to You. Amen.

Lord, may Your healing love turn us from sin and keep us on the way that leads to You. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

THE SERENITY PRAYER

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Help me to live one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time. Help me to accept hardships as the pathway to peace, taking as Your Son did, this world as it is, not as I would have it. Let me trust that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will. May I be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.

PRAYER FOR OUR NATION God our Father, giver of life, we entrust the Unites States of America to Your loving care. You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people. Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.” Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

TAKE MY HAND, O BLESSED MOTHER

Take my hand, O Blessed Mother. Hold me firmly lest I fall. If I’m nervous when I’m walking, quickly heed my humble call. Guide me over every crossing. Watch me when I’m on the stairs. Let me know that you’re beside me, listen to my fervent prayers. Bring me to my destination. Keep me safe along the way. Bless my every undertaking, and my duties for the day. When the evening draws upon me, I do not fear to be alone. Once again, O Blessed Mother, take my hand and lead me home.

All the earth shall bow down before you, O God, and shall sing to you, shall sing to your name, O Most High! Psalm 66(65):45
