Dear St. Matthew Parish Community,
November and the “Last Things”
Each year during the month of November the Church’s liturgy and popular devotion turn our attention to the Four Last Things: death, judgment, heaven and hell. This is no morbid fascination, but a so-ber reminder of the transitory nature of this world and an annual call to Christian hope. We begin the month celebrating the saints in glory on the Solemnity of All Saints. On Nov. 2, we observe the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) and later in the month, on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, we cele-brate the triumphant Solemnity of Christ the King. Though we may rarely ponder these realities, they are inescapable for each of us. Trying to live in denial of them is impossible and it only shrouds our live in a dark shadow. However, on the contrary, the traditions of November remind us of the eternal destiny of joy that God has prepared for us in Christ and the eternal consequenc-es of turning our back on God’s love. St. John of the Cross wrote, “In the evening of our life, we shall be judged on our love.” Perfect love will make possible our immediate entrance into heaven. Imper-fect love will require purification. The ultimate rejection of divine love will mean eternal separation from God. God has made us for heaven, where we will enjoy the perfect ful-fillment of all human longing in supreme and eternal happiness. We are called to this blessedness. (Continued on page 2)

November and the “Last Things” (cont’d)
We are summoned to be saints. We cannot even begin to imagine the joy God has prepared for us in heaven. The bible uses images such as a wedding banquet to offer us a glimpse of the joy and happiness of heaven. We know that in heaven we will enjoy perfect communion in love with the most Holy Trinity and all of the angels and saints. Jesus has opened the gates of heaven for us by his death for our sins and his resurrection from the dead. To assist us in focusing our sights on this joyful end and in our prayer that loved ones reach it along with us, the Church has gathered various traditions into the month of November and into early Advent of December. Here are some that we have scheduled at St. Matthew’s this year. All Soul’s Offertory Envelopes: Beginning this weekend and throughout the month of November, the faithful are invited to write the names of our beloved dead and place them in the box provided near
the pulpit. These individuals will be included in the prayers of the parish throughout the month.
The Names of Those Who Have Died in the Past Year: A scroll with the names of those who were buried from St. Matthew’s Church during the past 12 months will solemnly be placed at the Baptismal Font, where we are reminded of St. Paul’s words: “We were indeed buried with Christ through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life” (Romans 6:4)
All Saints Day: November 1 (A holy day of obligation): Thursday, November 1st. at 6:30am, 8:15am, 12:05pm and 6:00pm in English and 7:30pm in Spanish.
All Souls Day: November 2 (Not a holy day of obligation): Friday, November 2nd: 6:30am and 12:05pm in English and 7:00pm in Spanish.
Mass and Reception for the Families of Those Who Died during the Past 12 Months: Saturday, November 3rd at 12:05pm.
Life Care Planning Resources: Saturday November 10 from 3:30pm – 5:00pm. Professionals will be available to speak with you individually about Estate Planning, Advanced Care Directives, Funeral Arrangements, and Bereavement. Everyone breathes easier and more gracefully when these arrangements are made in advance. November and these special events should remind us to prayerfully contemplate the direction of our lives by considering eternity and where our lives are leading us: toward God, or away from Him? What changes in the direction of my life and my planning need to be made? November truly is a month of the "Last Things," but because it so profoundly reminds us of the love and mercy offered us by God – it truly is, a month of hope!

Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor
