PARENT PRAYER

Loving God, help us to be good parents. Let us love with a love that sees beyond all selfish aim. Help us learn to look to You each

moment of our lives for guidance in this great task You have given us. Lord, may we always feel it is not only a great task but also a wonderful

privilege to be A PARENT!

Assist us with Your grace that we may fulfill this sacred duty with competence and love. Teach us what to give and what to withhold. Show

us when to reprove, when to praise and when to be silent. Make us gentle and considerate, yet firm and watchful. Keep us from the

weakness of indulgence and the excess of severity. Give us the courage to be disliked sometimes by our children when we must do necessary things which are displeasing in their eyes. Give us the imagination to

enter their world in order to understand and guide them.

Grant us all the virtues we need to lead them by word and example in the ways of wisdom and piety.

Amen

Philosophy

The Nature of Purpose

St. Mary’s School is a community dedicated to creating an atmosphere of love and understanding in which the students can grow, learn and develop moral responsibility toward themselves and others.

Religious Attribute We are a partnership of believers–parents, teachers, students-whose lifestyles reflect the teachings of the Gospel. We believe that we are witnesses of Jesus Christ’s teachings and as witnesses, it is our mission to continue to propagate these traditional teachings to future generations for the purpose of the betterment of the world. We educate the “whole child” spiritually and academically. Each child is equipped to meet the challenges of society with values and attitudes which flow from their belief in God and the dignity of each person. This is done through the reaffirmation of basic Catholic doctrine and its implementation by celebrating the Eucharist, receiving the sacraments and prayerful experiences. St. Mary’s School strives to teach what we believe and, as a result, live what we teach. This concept is put into practice by presenting ourselves as living examples of Jesus Christ’s word and through Christian service activities.

Academic Attribute St. Mary’s sets the stage for life by offering each student the opportunity to acquire a basic knowledge of objective truths and an ability to make personal adaptations in daily life. We recognize that maturation is a continuous process. This growth is developed through flexibe programming such as basic skills, critical thinking, grouping and extracurricular activities. Therefore, each student is afforded the opportunity and encouraged to reach his/her potential. Through these positive experiences, we hope to reinforce each student’s self-esteem.

NATURE OF THE STUDENT

Intellectual Attribute St. Mary’s is dedicated to making the student a productive, responsible and concerned member of society. This is achieved through intellectual development in the primary years by presenting problem-solving activities in a social manner through gratification of curiosity and personal satisfaction. On the intermediate and upper levels, the intellectual development is further enhanced through critical-thinking skills, activities promoting motor and sensory skills, mastery of logical operations and encouraging the growth and discipline of rational powers.

Religious Attribute Reinforcement of moral and spiritual values, which originate in the home, are fostered on each level. This is developed by encouraging student participation in educational, spiritual and social activities that commensurate with each level of maturity.

Page 7: St. Mary's Parent Handbook 2017-2018 · PDF fileIntroduction Parent Prayer ... Oral and written quizzes, classroom discussion, homework, projects and ... In conclusion,

Personal Attribute Recognizing that each child is unique, St. Mary’s encourages self-respect and the development of self-control. This is done by the reinforcement of positive behavior and creating a climate for healthy rapport and personal relationships.

Physical Attributes Realizing that the human body is God’s gift, through the classroom and physical education curriculum, we foster a respect for individual health, others’ well-being, a spirit of leadership, teamwork and good sportsmanship, which is supplemented by extracurricular offerings.

NATURE OF PROCESSES

Administrative Attribute The primary guidelines followed by St. Mary’s School are those proposed by the Diocese of Paterson. The faculty and staff then adapt and develop individual educational and managerial policies. This is implemented through whole-faculty meetings, individual grade-level meetings and Professional Learning Community meetings. Policies are communicated through Back-To School-Night meetings, Parent and Student Handbooks, the website, individual teacher communications and newsletters.

Curriculum Attribute Supporting the theory that reading is fundamental, St. Mary’s primary grades use reading as the core of the curriculum. Structural analysis, vocabulary and comprehension are presented in a sequential and methodical process according to each child’s ability. New reading skills are introduced to incorporate the comprehension of other subject matter such as science and social studies. Curriculum guidelines are developed by the Diocese of Paterson in accordance with the State of New Jersey and reviewed by the administration and faculty. They are then implemented in the individual classroom according to each student’s needs.

Teaching Attribute Using basic Christian values as the nucleus of our being, we strive to instill these tenets into all teaching experiences. Constantly mindful of individuality and practicality, the higher possible potential and achievement of each student is continually encouraged. This program is accomplished through a partnership of parent and teacher working together in cooperation and mutual respect.

Evaluation Attribute It is the aim of the evaluation process to assess the achievement of each student. This is done formally and informally. Formal evaluation is achieved through standardized tests presented in conjunction with the textbook and teacher-prepared tests. Informal evaluation is done through daily observation. Oral and written quizzes, classroom discussion, homework, projects and special activities all give witness to each student’s growth.

NATURE OF RELATIONSHIPS

Teacher to School St Mary’s teachers promote student relationships which are Christian in manner, giving support and care and cooperating with each other when needed. This caring and cooperating among students enhances academic success and personal growth.

Teacher to Student St. Mary’s teachers strive to build a unique and special rapport with students by being a consistent role model, and by demonstrating and appreciating each other’s gifts. Together, we endeavor to establish reciprocal feelings of respect, regard, appreciation and affection for one another.

Teacher to Teacher As Catholic school teachers, we work together by integrating our skills, knowledge , cultures and spirit. We nurture a mutual and supportive respect, and benefit from each other’s experiences, resulting in professional and spiritual growth.

Teacher to Parent Cognizant of the fact that St. Mary’s School was chosen for its academic and religious excellence, parents are encouraged to participate in the many activities made available to their children throughout the school year. They are considered to play a vital role in their children’s well-rounded education, and therefore are considered to be in partnership with the teachers to enhance the quality of the education experienced.

In conclusion, the result of an education at St. Mary’s School is the channeling of Christian values into society. Ultimately, each child is provided with a spiritual and academic foundation to cope with daily life situations and to develop into adulthood with a realization and responsibility to spread the faith and Good News of Jesus Christ.

Page 11: St. Mary's Parent Handbook 2017-2018 · PDF fileIntroduction Parent Prayer ... Oral and written quizzes, classroom discussion, homework, projects and ... In conclusion,

Absence When a student is absent from school, a parent should call the office by 9:00 am each day of the absence. If the office does not receive a call, a parent will be contacted. This policy is for the protection of St. Mary’s students.

Students should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. Students who are sent home during the school day with a fever will not be allowed to return to school the next day as this would not allow for the 24 hour protection of the entire school community.

Students absent for three days or more are required to have a doctor’s note prior to returning to school.

The school calendar provides for extended weekends throughout the school year. Parents are encouraged to schedule trips or family outings during these times so as to eliminate the need to interrupt a child’s learning process. Missed assignments are the student’s responsibility upon returning from a scheduled trip. No assignments will be given in anticipation of the vacation. Trips should not be scheduled during TerraNova or Cumulative Review testing weeks.

Students who are absent due to illness have one day for each day of absence to make up the missed assignments, quizzes or tests. For example, a student who was absent three days would be given three school days to complete the missed work. Please contact the school office as early as possible if assignments and books are to be picked up for an absent student. Work can be picked up after 1:00 pm in the office.

Arrangements for regular classroom tests missed because of an absence are to be made with the individual teachers. These tests must be taken within one week of the original test date.

Excessive absence can be cause for a student to be retained in the current grade for another year.

Absence During the School Day Students needing medical appointments during school hours require a written note by the parent. Parents are required to sign-out their child. If the child returns to school during the same school day, he/she must be walked to the main office.

permitted to attend a field trip activity. A Field Trip permission slip is included at the end of this Handbook for your convenience. Verbal permission cannot be accepted. Permission slips and fees are due in the office forty-eight hours after receipt of the permission slip. Note: a fax does not take the place of an original signature.

Every family enrolling children in St. Mary’s School is shown the actual cost of educating each student. St Mary’s registered parishioners, with children in grades Kindergarten through Grade 8 are eligible to respond with their own determination of their ability to pay a fair share of this actual per-pupil cost. For some the ability to pay may comfortably absorb the actual cost. For others, it will be a judgment set against other financial factors which beset their personal lives. If one asks you the question “What is the tuition at St. Mary’s School?”, your answer is “It is the amount of money that you can honestly pay toward the cost of educating your child(ren).” This Fair Ability to Pay Program is offered so all parents may have an opportunity to choose Catholic Education because of its value and not to be excluded from St. Mary’s School because of its cost. All information will be strictly confidential. Please note the following:

• Registration for all students is done through the school’s office, starting in March, and prior

to any tuition meeting with the Pastor. Registration fees must be paid, in full, prior to a tuition meeting with the Pastor.

• Parents paying full tuition (grades K-8) will receive a $500.00 discount on multiple registrants.

• Families participating in the Fair Ability Program will receive the discount based on the tier for which they qualify. This process begins with information given through an online private survey of income (Parents will receive a password from the office) and only after the financial/fundraising obligations have been met for the year and concludes with a meeting with the Pastor. Proof of eligibility (tax returns, etc.) is needed at this meeting.

Health and Wellness

1.Allergy Policy

St. Mary’s School recognizes that allergies/asthma are an important condition affecting many school children. All medications, including inhalators and/or Epi-Pens are kept in the Nurses Office. These medications will be transferred to the Gym for After-Care and will be taken on any Field Trips. It is the responsibility of the parent to provide medications to the school. Students will be permitted to self-administer medication only for life-threatening conditions (such as asthma). The parent/guardian must schedule an appointment with the Principal and School Nurse to discuss procedure.

Record Keeping At the beginning of each school year, or when a child joins St. Mary’s School, parents are asked to submit a child’s medical record. From this information the school keeps its asthma register which is available for all school staff. If medication changes in between times, parents are asked to inform the school. 2.The School Environment The school does all that it can to ensure the school environment is favorable to children with asthma or allergies.

3.Food Allergy Policy

St. Mary’s School recognizes that life threatening food allergies are an important condition affecting many school children and positively welcomes all pupils with food allergies. In order to minimize the incidence of life threatening allergic reactions, St. Mary’s School will maintain a system-wide procedure for addressing life threatening allergic reactions and maintain an Individual Action Plan for any student(s) whose parent/guardian, and physicians have informed the school in writing that the student(s) has a potentially life threatening allergy.

4.Classrooms Teachers must be familiar with the Individual Action Plan of students in their classes and respond to emergencies as per the emergency protocol documented in the Individual Action Plan.

In the event of a suspected allergic reaction (where there is no known allergic history), the school nurse will be called. The emergency medical services will be called immediately.

12

Information will be kept about students’ food allergies in the classroom and in the substitute emergency folder, accessible by teachers, substitutes or other responsible adults.

All teachers will be educated about the risk of food allergies. Teachers are certified yearly in Epi-Pen administration. The staff is also trained and certified in CPR and AED administration. As per Janet’s Law, an AED is located on every level of the school building.

A parent or guardian of a student with food allergies is responsible for providing all food for his/her own child. Snacks will be kept in a separate snack box or chest provided by the parent or guardian. Students are not permitted to share snacks.

MEDICATIONS St. Mary’s School strongly discourages the administration of either prescription or non-prescription medication in school or on field trips. However, if it is absolutely essential that a student receive medication while under school supervision, the School Nurse or Principal (or her designate) will administer the medication under the following conditions:

1. The medication must be sent in to the school nurse or Principal or Principal’s designee by the parent. Medications sent via backpack is strongly discouraged. All medication will be kept in a locked closet and administered by the school nurse or authorized substitute nurse or Principal’s designee.

2. The medication must be in the original pharmacy labeled container and unopened. 3. Medications prescribed by a licensed physician may be dispensed only if:

An “Authorization to Administer Medication in School” form is filled out. Certification form completed by Physician is filled out, signed and dated. Form to be completed by Parent/Guardian is filled out, signed and dated.

4. Over the counter medications, such as Tylenol, aspirin, cough syrup, cough drops, Maalox, etc., may be dispensed only if:

An “Authorization to Administer Medication in School” form is filled out. Certification Form completed by Physician is filled out, signed and dated. Form to be completed by Parent/Guardian is filled out, signed and dated.

All medication is to be taken in the presence of the school nurse or designate. SCOLIOSIS State School Law mandates examination for scoliosis (deformity of the spine) in students ages 10-18. This will be performed by the school nurse biannually. A student may be exempt upon written request of the parent.

Home-School Communication In order to insure that all communication from school reaches home in a timely manner, St. Mary’s School uses a Tuesday Packet system. All important notices can be found online each Tuesday. It is highly recommended that parents read the valuable information each week.

Homework Formal home-study is assigned to help students become self-reliant and self-directed. Assignments are designed to reinforce daily lessons, to supplement and enrich class work, and to prepare for certain lessons through various experiences.

Since each student has different capabilities and interests, it would be difficult to denote the specific amount of time to be spent on an assignment. If a problem arises, the teacher should be contacted.

Library The school has a well-equipped automated library and media center. Students are encouraged to use the library for curricular enrichment and pleasure reading. The following rules are to be observed:

1. Borrowed books are to be returned on time and in good condition. 2. A fine of one canned good per day is required for overdue books with a maximum

fine of ten cans. (Canned goods are donated to St. Mary’s Food Pantry). Books damaged or lost must be paid for by the student before any other materials may be checked out.

Lost and Found Any items found in the school building or on the school grounds should be given to the school office to be placed in the Lost and Found container. Items placed in the Lost and Found remain there for 10 days. After 10 days, items are donated to charity. Students who lose a textbook or workbook must pay the replacement cost of the book plus shipping in order to receive a new copy.

Parent’s Role in Education

We, at St. Mary’s School, consider it a privilege to work with parents in the education of children because we believe parents are the primary educators of their children. Therefore, it is your right and your duty to become the primary role models for the development of your child’s life---physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically. Your choice of St. Mary’s School involves a commitment and exhibits a concern for helping your child to recognize God as the greatest good in his/her life.

Once you have chosen to enter into a partnership with us at St. Mary’s School, we trust you will be loyal to this commitment. During these formative years (Pre-K to 8), your child needs constant support from both parents and faculty in order to develop his/her moral, intellectual, social, cultural, and physical endowment. Neither parents nor teachers can afford to doubt the sincerity of the efforts of their educational partner in the quest of challenging, yet nourishing, the student to reach his/her potential. It is vital that both parents and teachers remember that allowing oneself to be caught between the student and the other partner will never have positive results. To divide authority between school and home or within the home will only teach disrespect of all authority. Evidence of mutual respect between parents and teachers will model good mature behavior and relationships. Students are naturally eager to grow and learn. However, sometimes in the process of maturation new interests may cause them to lose focus. As this natural process occurs, the student needs both understanding and discipline. At times, your child may perceive discipline as restrictive. However, it is boundaries and limits which provide a young person with both guidance and security.

It is essential that a child take responsibility for grades he/she has earned and be accountable for homework, long-term assignments, major tests, service projects, and all other assignments. This responsibility also extends to times of absence.

Together, let us begin this year with a commitment to partnership as we support one another in helping your child to become the best person he/she is capable of becoming.

Parent/Teacher Conferences Formal Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the end of the first marking period. Parents are encouraged to schedule conferences at any time during the school year should the need arise. In consideration for your child’s privacy, please do not confer with the teacher on the pavers and/or lunchroom before or after school.

Parking and Drop-Off Parking and/or Drop-Off is not permitted on Pompton Avenue in the morning or at dismissal. In the morning, students may be dropped-off in the designated Drop-Off Zone located in the parking lot off Lenox Avenue. Please do not park or exit your car in this zone. Parents may park in the parking lot to walk their child to the pavers in the morning or in the afternoon at dismissal.

Parties

Class Mothers, in conjunction with the classroom teacher plan parties, according to grade level. A September meeting should take place to plan the parties for the year.

Pets on School Property

Pets are not permitted on the pavers at any time. Parents should not permit any child, with the exception of their own, to pet or touch an animal.

Promotion Policy and Retention Policy Advancement to the next grade in St. Mary’s School is based on a student’s daily performance, test results, recommendations of teachers, and the student’s ability to complete work successfully on a more advanced level. Promotion to the next grade depends on successful completion of all subject areas. The Administration may recommend the repetition of a grade, tutoring, or summer school classes as requirement for promotion when, after conferences with teachers and parents, it is believed that such action will better prepare the student academically or emotionally for the next grade. Frequent absences may be cause for retention.

Report Cards/Progress Reports Progress Reports will be given mid-way between each grading period. Teachers are required to send Progress Reports to all students the first marking period. Thereafter, students will receive a Progress Report if the teacher has a concern to share with the parent. Students are graded through Rediker, a web-based program. Parents of students in grades 4-8 will receive a password to view their child’s grades at any time. Parents are encouraged to do so often. Report Cards are important tools for communication. Report Cards will be given four (4) times during the academic school year or every nine (9-10) weeks for grades 2-8, three times a year for grade 1 and two (2) times a year for Little Friars through Kindergarten. Returning to School After Dismissal

For the safety of students, students are not permitted to return to the school building after the 2:40 PM dismissal.

Sacramental Program

The sacramental life of the children of the Catholic tradition is an important component of the religion program at St. Mary’s School. Preparations for two sacraments, Reconciliation and Eucharist, form the core of instruction in Grade 2. In accordance with the Diocesan guidelines, candidates for First Eucharist will receive the sacrament of Reconciliation prior to First Eucharist. Parents are required to be active partners in the preparation of their children for these sacraments. The sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are only conferred to students baptized in the Roman Catholic tradition. 18

School Hours and Tardiness A staff member begins morning duty on the pavers at 8:00 am. Students are not permitted to be on school property without being accompanied by an adult prior to 8:00 am. Students dropped- off prior to 8:00 am should go directly to Before-Care. On inclement weather days, a staff member will be at the side door to welcome the students at 8:00 am. Teachers will be in their classrooms to greet the children.

At St. Mary’s School, we work in partnership with parents to enable each child to develop as an independent learner. Parents should allow their child(ren) to enter the school building on their own each morning.

The first bell rings at 8:10 am. Teachers will meet their classes on the pavers at that time. Students are to line up with their class in silence. Teachers then lead students into the school building. The second bell rings and instruction begins at 8:15 am. Tardiness Arriving to school on time is essential for the start of a successful school day. A student’s late arrival can lead to a child feeling flustered and can also be disruptive to the learning process of other students. The school is aware that unforeseen circumstances can lead to a student being late. Therefore, a student will be permitted to accrue three (3) tardies in a marking period without consequence. A student arriving late for a fourth time (and each thereafter) in a marking period will be given a lunch recess detention. Tardiness will also affect a student’s eligibility to be placed on the Honor Roll. Students will not be marked late during situations of poor weather conditions or traffic due to accidents.

School Office Hours

The school office is open on all school days from 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM. School Property The parent of a child who carelessly destroys or damages any furniture, equipment, buildings, or anyone’s personal property will be obligated to pay the full amount of repairs and labor or replacement. Textbooks used by the student must have a proper book cover. No writing in textbooks is permitted. The student will pay the replacement cost for damaged or lost textbooks before any final reports, transcripts, or diplomas are presented.

School Safety and Security For the safety of our students and staff members, please follow these safety rules:

• Please ring the bell to enter the school building • Upon arrival, please go directly to the office • Bring all items being delivered to students (lunch, books, treats, etc.) directly to the
