Those who are shielding should not come to mass until advised it is safe to do so by the Scottish Government. Those in other health categories should follow the Government’s advice in coming to their decision to attend mass or not. If you have symptoms of coronavirus or have been in contact with someone who has please stay at home. For those in the above categories and anyone who cannot currently make it to Mass, please be assured we always remember you in our prayers. Clerical Changes: There have been several changes of personnel throughout the diocese and some retirals: Fr. Hugh Kelly who so very generously celebrated mass in St Mary Magdalene’s, Forth is retiring. We sincerely thank Fr. Kelly for his generous care and ministry in St Mary Magdalene’s and wish him a long and happy retirement. Fr. Thomas Doyle has been appointed Parish Priest of the Most Blessed Trinity (Holy Trinity and All Saints Coatdyke and St Stephen’s Sikeside) from 29 th September. Fr. John Paul McShane has been appointed Parish Priest of St Mary’s Lanark and St Isidore’s Biggar (including St Mary Magdalene’s Forth) from 29 th September.

SundayReflectionToday’sFirstReadingcatchestheprophetJeremiahinamomentofweakness.HisintimatelamentationcontainssomeofthestrongestlanguageofdoubtfoundintheBible.FollowingGod’scall,hefeelsabandoned.PreachingHisWordhasbroughthimonlyderisionandreproach.ButGoddoesnotdeceive—andJeremiahknowsthis.Godteststhejust(seeJeremiah20:11–12),anddisciplinesHischildrenthroughtheirsufferingsandtrials(seeHebrews12:5–7).WhatJeremiahlearns,Jesusstatesexplicitlyintoday’sGospel.TofollowHimistotakeupacross,todenyyourself—yourpriorities,preferences,andcomforts.Itistobewillingtogiveitallup,evenlifeitself,forthesakeofHisgospel.AsPaulsaysintoday’sEpistle,wehavetojoinourselvestothepassionofChrist,toofferourbodies—ourwholebeings—aslivingsacrificestoGod.ByHisCross,JesushasshownuswhatIsrael’ssacrificesofanimalsweremeanttoteach:weowetoGodallthatwehave.God’skindnessisagreatergoodthanlifeitself,aswesingintoday’sPsalm.Theonlythankswecanofferisourspiritualworship—togiveourlivestotheserviceofHiswill(seeHebrews10:3–11;Psalm50:14,23).Peterdoesn’tyetgetthisintoday’sGospel.AsitwasforJeremiah,thecrossisastumblingblockforPeter(see1Corinthians1:23).Thistooisournaturaltemptation—torefusetobelievethatoursufferingsplayanecessarypartinGod’splan.That’showpeoplethink,Jesustellsustoday.Butwearecalledtotherenewalofourminds—tothinkasGodthinks,towillwhatHewills.IntheMass,weonceagainofferourselvesasperfectandpleasingsacrificesofpraise(seeHebrews13:15).WeblessHimaswelive,confidentthatwewillfindourlivesinlosingthem,thatwiththerichesofHisbanquet,oursoulswillbesatisfied.

SaintGregorytheGreat:GregorywastheprefectofRomebeforehewas30.Afterfiveyearsinofficeheresigned,foundedsixmonasteriesonhisSicilianestate,andbecameaBenedictinemonkinhisownhomeatRome.Ordainedapriest,Gregorybecameoneofthepope’ssevendeacons,andalsoservedsixyearsintheEastaspapalrepresentativeinConstantinople.Hewasrecalledtobecomeabbot,butattheageof50waselectedpopebytheclergyandpeopleofRome.Gregorywasdirectandfirm.Heremovedunworthypriestsfromoffice,forbadetakingmoneyformanyservices,emptiedthepapaltreasurytoransomprisonersoftheLombardsandtocareforpersecutedJewsandthevictimsofplagueandfamine.HewasveryconcernedabouttheconversionofEngland,sending40monksfromhisownmonastery.Heisknownforhisreformoftheliturgy,andforstrengtheningrespectfordoctrine.Whetherhewaslargelyresponsiblefortherevisionof“Gregorian”chantisdisputed.GregorylivedinatimeofperpetualstrifewithinvadingLombardsanddifficultrelationswiththeEast.WhenRomeitselfwasunderattack,heinterviewedtheLombardking.Hisbook,PastoralCare,onthedutiesandqualitiesofabishop,wasreadforcenturiesafterhisdeath.Hedescribedbishopsmainlyasphysicianswhosemaindutieswerepreachingandtheenforcementofdiscipline.Inhisowndown-to-earthpreaching,GregorywasskilledatapplyingthedailyGospeltotheneedsofhislisteners.Called“theGreat,”GregoryhasbeengivenaplacewithAugustine,Ambrose,andJerome,asoneofthefourkeydoctorsoftheWesternChurch.AnAnglicanhistorianhaswritten:“Itisimpossibletoconceivewhatwouldhavebeentheconfusion,thelawlessness,thechaoticstateoftheMiddleAgeswithoutthemedievalpapacy;andofthemedievalpapacy,therealfatherisGregorytheGreat.”

LiturgicalGuidelinesforHolyMassRecognisingthatthevirusispredominantlycontagiousthroughthebreathinginofairdroplets,theseguidelinesarebasedontheneedtoreducethelengthoftimewhenparishionersaretogether.ThesearetentativestepsforreturningtoMassandmaybereviewedatanytime:-SingingofMasspartsandhymnsmaybeomitted.

-BoththeGloriaandtheCreedmaybeomitted.

-AtSundayMassthesecondreadingmaybeomitted.

-Thesermonshouldbebrief.

-Inplaceofthewords“BodyofChrist”foreachcommunicant,beforetheCelebrantreceivesHolyCommunion,hemaysaythewordsMaytheBodyandBloodofChristkeepusallsafetoeternallife,towhichthecongregationrespondsAmen.

-InaccordancewiththenationalprotocolonInfectionControl,itisrecommendedthatHolyCommunionbereceivedinthehandforthedurationofthepandemic.

-Thecommunicantshouldextendhis/herhandstoreceivethehostandthensteptwopacestothesideinordertoplacethehostonthetongue.

-HolyCommunionmaybedistributedaftertheFinalPrayer.ParishionersmaybedirectedtoleavetheChurchimmediatelyafterreceivingHolyCommunion.

Inkeepingwiththecurrentgovernmentadviceweremindyouofthecurrentguidelines:-WearafacecoveringintheChurch.-Observesocialdistancing.-SanitiseyourhandsatsanitizingunitsinChurch-EnterandexittheChurchusingthedooryouhavebeengivenonthetelephonewhenbookingforMass.Pleasebeassuredwehavedoneeverythingwecantocreateasafeenvironmentforyou,whenyouarriveapass-keeperwillmeetyouandguideyoutoayourseatandwillbeonhandtolookafteryouduringyourvisit.TheseguidelineshavebeensetbytheScottishGovernmentandareforyourwellbeingaswellasthatofyourbrothersandsistersintheparish.

SaintTeresaofCalcuttawhomweknowbetterasMotherTeresaofCalcutta,thetinywomanrecognizedthroughouttheworldforherworkamongthepoorestofthepoor,wasbeatifiedOctober19,2003.AmongthosepresentwerehundredsofMissionariesofCharity,theordershefoundedin1950,asadiocesanreligiouscommunity.Todaythecongregationalsoincludescontemplativesistersandbrothersandanorderofpriests.BorntoAlbanianparentsinwhatisnowSkopje,Macedonia,Gonxha(Agnes)Bojaxhiuwastheyoungestofthethreechildrenwhosurvived.Foratime,thefamilylivedcomfortably,andherfather’sconstructionbusinessthrived.Butlifechangedovernightfollowinghisunexpecteddeath.Duringheryearsinpublicschool,AgnesparticipatedinaCatholicsodalityandshowedastronginterestintheforeignmissions.Atage18,sheenteredtheLoretoSistersofDublin.Itwas1928whenshesaidgoodbyetohermotherforthefinaltimeandmadeherwaytoanewlandandanewlife.ThefollowingyearshewassenttotheLoretonovitiateinDarjeeling,India.ThereshechosethenameTeresaandpreparedforalifeofservice.ShewasassignedtoahighschoolforgirlsinCalcutta,whereshetaughthistoryandgeographytothedaughtersofthewealthy.Butshecouldnotescapetherealitiesaroundher—thepoverty,thesuffering,theoverwhelmingnumbersofdestitutepeople.
