The God Who is Revealed in Christmas

Christmas is God’s answer to human longing, God’s response to the

centuries of prayers that lay hidden in our groaning, in our sighs, each of

them a plea, mostly silent, for a divine intervention.

But God’s answer didn’t exactly meet our expectations even as it

surpassed them. What was born with Jesus’ birth wasn’t exactly what the

world expected.

Why would God choose to be born into the world in this way?

Because you can’t argue with a baby! Babies don’t try to compete, don’t

stand up to you, don’t try to best you in an argument. And that is the

Saviour who was born in Bethlehem, and that is how God is still basically

in the world. The power of God revealed in Christmas is the power of a

baby, nothing more, nothing less.

The power of Christmas is like the power of a baby, it underwhelms in

such a way as to eventually overwhelm. There is a greater power than

muscle, speed, charism, unstoppable force. But we have always been

slow to understand this. Even John the Baptist expected the messiah to

come with that kind of power.

When he heard reports of Jesus gently inviting sinners in rather than

casting them off, John was scandalized. John hadn’t wanted a gentle,

vulnerable, peace-preaching messiah. But, to his credit, once he saw how

Jesus’ power worked, he understood, accepted a deeper truth, stepped

back in self-effacement, and pointed people in Jesus’ direction with the

words: He must increase and I must decrease. I’m not even worthy to

untie his scandal strap!

We too are slow to understand. We want the kind of messiah we see at

the end of every Hollywood thriller. But that’s not the Christmas story, nor

the power revealed in it. An infant lying in the straw in Bethlehem didn’t

outgun anyone. He just lay there, waiting for anyone good or bad to come

to him, see his helplessness, feel a tug at his or her heart strings, and then

gently try to coax a smile or a word out of him.

That’s still how God meets us.

REFLECTION

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“You may have to fight a battle more than once

to win it.”

National Prayer for Drought Eternal God, in wisdom & love You created our

earth to sustain us & give us life. We turn to

You in faith, hope & love, asking You to look

with favour on our drought-stricken land, on

our starving animals, on our failing crops.

Strengthen, sustain & give new heart to our

farmers & all who are affected by drought; be

with those who support them. In Your loving

providence, send abundant rain & restore our

parched earth. Father of all compassion, hear

our prayer, through Jesus Christ Your Son, in

Whom the promise of new life has dawned, &

through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord

the giver of life; Renew the face of the earth.

Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Mary Help of

Christians—Pray for us. St Mary of the Cross

MacKillop—Pray for us. Amen.

GOD’S KINGDOM IS NEAR. John the Baptist urged

the people to prepare for the coming of the kingdom

by repenting of their sins. Their baptism by John in

the Jordan river was an important ritual act of

sorrow. But they also had to express their sorrow by

reforming their lives. The sacrament of

reconciliation, and right living , are excellent means

through which we can prepare for the feast of

Christmas.

Communion/Visits to Aged Care Facilities If

you would like your relative/s, in these facilities, to

receive Communion or be visited by our Parish

Priest/Parishioners, please advise the Parish Office

and arrangements will be made accordingly.

We wish the ten members of our

Youth Group and their two leaders our

best wishes for their trip to WA to

attend the Australian Catholic Youth

Festival this weekend. Please keep

them all in your prayers.
