But there isn’t a birth of Jesus without the birth of his cousin John. John is the one who gets us prepared and ready to welcome a Savior into our lives, by helping us recognize how much we need saving from our sins. Six months before the Archangel Gabriel comes to Mary to inform her she will have a child, Gabriel appears to Zechariah to let him know that his wife Elizabeth will finally have a son, in spite of their old age and Elizabeth’s barrenness. Zechariah doesn’t believe the angel. Zechariah asks, “How can this be?!” Gabriel sounds indignant as he presents his credentials to Zechariah: “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God and I have been sent to you to speak to you and bring you this good news!” Because Zechariah doubts the good news, Gabriel renders Zechariah unable to speak - the sign of an encounter with the divine - until John is born. Only when Zechariah writes on a tablet “His name is John” to resolve the family squabble over what name to give the child, is Zechariah able to speak - because “John” is the name the angel Gabriel gave the child, and Zechariah’s agreement with Gabriel is the sign he now believes the good news the angel brought him. The power of Zechariah to speak again is the sign that God has broken this world’s silence to speak His word of good news in Jesus - the Word made flesh. The birth of John is celebrated near the summer solstice, when the days begin to grow shorter until the winter solstice around the birth of Jesus when the days begin to grow longer, to recall what John said: “I must decrease, he must increase”.

The Nat iv i ty of St . John the Bapt i st 24 June 2018

Do you skip over the story of the birth of John the Baptist to get to the “good” story - the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus?

I stand in the presence of God and I have been sent to you to speak to you and bring you this good news!” Because Zechariah

doubts the good news, Gabriel renders Zechariah unable to speak - the sign of an encounter with the divine - until John is born.

PASTORAL COUNCIL CORNER

We are delighted to let you know that we have three trained Question of the Week Volunteers who can be identified by yellow badges. They look forward to getting to know your hopes and dreams for our parish through the Question of the Week. If you are interested in learning about being a volunteer for the Question of the Week on Sundays after Mass, please let one of the Pastoral Council members know. We have a few parishioners waiting to attend the 45-minute training and we would love to have you join us. Please use the Response Boxes for your response to the Question of the Week. If you fill out a card, be sure to include your name before putting it in one of the two boxes (breezeway and hall). If you have other topics you would like the council to address, please contact a council member directly. Thank you. We look forward to hearing your responses to the new Question of the Week and sharing a cup of coffee with you.
