  • THIS WEEK IN THE RCIA: THE “INTERPRETATION OF MYSTERY” BEGINS Congratulations to Lindley and Tracy – again! – on their entrance into the full community of faith here at St. Mary of Vernon last Saturday. Over the next few weeks, we will continue to meet and to enter a period called mystagogia, a deepening of our understandings in the mysteries of our faith. We approach this period as a time for "shaking-up" and reaffirming our life in the Holy Spirit. The early Church understood that many of the mysteries of faith that had been entrusted to the new members needed time to "sink-in" and mature. Mystagogia is the seeping in period, in which all believers are able to take time and more deeply contemplate the Church's life and sacraments.

The RCIA team invites all our parishioners and guests to continue praying for our seekers – Emma and Hannah, who themselves are approaching a change from Inquiry to the Catechumenate – and our sponsors, teams of catechists and aides, our neighbors who are being called back to the Church, any friends or families who have strayed from the Church, and all those who are seeking to better understand their relationship with God.

Individuals who would like to know more about the Catholic Faith can connect with someone on our RCIA team for basic information or to set up an appointment to discuss specific questions or goals; contact Maureen Evers (847-362-1005 or [email protected]) or Mark Zwolski (847-644-7073 or [email protected]).

DAILY MASS DURING LENT We encourage the practice of Daily Mass during Lent. Even if you cannot attend every day, perhaps you can join us once or twice a week. The Mass schedule is as follows:

    7:00 AM—Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:00 AM—Tuesday & Thursday

    8:30 AM—Saturday Morning

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Stations are an old tradition in the Church, especially during Lent. The devo-tion began in the Middle Ages when Christians longed to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but found this impossible. Instead we trace the journey of Jesus along the Way of the Cross to Calvary and Resurrection in our own church by prayer and meditation. Stations will be on

Friday evenings at 4:00 PM & 7:00 PM in the Church.

LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meat is to be ob-served by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength ac-cording to one’s needs; but eating solid foods between meals is not per-mitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Ho-ly Saturday. “Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the Len-ten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both catechu-mens, by the various stages of Chris-tian Initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do pen-ance.” (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, #27)

YOU MAY HAVE WONDERED ABOUT . . . Mass Intentions read during the Prayers of the Faithful. Mass intentions can be reserved at the Narthex desk, or by visiting or calling the Parish Office. At weekday Masses and at the 5 pm and 7:45 am Masses, only one intention is allowed (although names of related family members can count as one inten-tion). At the 9:30 am and 11:15 am Masses, we can reserve more than one intention. We request a $10 stipend. Votive Candles (on the east side of the sanctuary) may be reserved at the Nar-thex desk or at the parish office during the week. Candles last @ six days, and are changed on Saturday mornings. The donation is $5.

  • Mini Parish Mission: Change, Transi ons and Spirituality

Homily at Sunday Masses on March 16-17, 2019

    ---------- Mission Reflec on

on Sunday, March 17 at 2 PM

Change: for some of us this is a threatening word; for oth-ers a very welcomed word. The reality is that St. Mary of Vernon parish community will experience its second change in pastors as Fr. Joe retires from his pastorate here as of June 30th. But there is more to change than the external events in our external world.

Transition: What will this change mean in our personal lives? Will we be sad? Will we be distrusting of the future? How can we best negotiate this transition? What are our strategies for negotiat-ing this transition?

Personal Transitions: Another level of “transition” is that it triggers our remembrance of our own personal transitions in life. Some will, perhaps, remember: their commitment to each other in marriage; becoming parents; experiencing children leaving home and then becoming adults; or becoming grandparents! Others will re-member changing jobs; moving to other cities or neighborhoods; tak-ing on new responsibilities.

Spirituality of Transition. How does any transition offer us an opportunity to deepen our commitment to and relationship to Christ? How are each of our life transitions simply rehearsals for our final transition, our death and transition to eternal life?

Two classmates of Fr. Joe will join us for presenting the mis-sion on that weekend. Fr. Bob Heidenreich will share his reflections on these topics in the homilies on the weekend Masses on March 15/16th. He will be joined by Msgr. John Canary, on Sunday after-noon at 2 PM, presenting reflections on the human and spiritual im-plications of St. Mary of Vernon’s upcoming transition of pas-tors. (Biographies will follow)

We hope you will join us.

SECOND COLLECTION TODAY For the Church in

Central & Eastern Europe This collection helps the people in countries like Georgia in the Caucasus region of Eastern Europe. After 70 years of oppression under the Soviet regime, the Georgian people declared independ-ence in 1991, and the Church entered a new era of freedom. Most Catholics there live in remote villages, where med-ical care is all but impossible to find. The elderly, disabled, children, and ex-pectant mothers suffer most. The Church in Georgia is working through the par-ishes there to improve access to nursing services, doctors and medication. Please be generous. You will bring the light of Christ and strength of his healing to people who need to know they are not forgotten. More information at www.usccb.org/ccee

  • THE LORD OUR JUSTICE: A FIVE-WEEK LENTEN SERIES Charlie Bold will lead a five week Lenten Series on the role of Justice in our lives, something that you might want to consider as a Justice Opportunity During Lent. In the first week of this current liturgical year, on the First Sunday of Advent, Jeremiah the prophet in Chapter 33:14-16 highlights 'Justice' in this way: "I will raise up for David a just shoot, he will do what is right and just in the land..."The Lord Our Justice." For our series,The Lord Our Justice, we will use John Heagle's excellent book, Justice Rising, (Orbis Books, Maryknoll, New York). Heagle posits in his book that Justice has been largely ignored among Christian traditions. On the other hand, the Jesus of the Gospels speaks out clearly and loudly about Justice, Justice, Justice and more Justice. You can register for the Justice Lenten Series by directly email Charlie Bold at ckekkm6 @aol.com, or by registering on the Saturday evening/Sunday registration days. By all means, bring your Justice issues, questions, articles, music, and ideas, and share your Justice experiences. This Justice Series will be offered on Tuesday evenings, 7:00 pm to 8:30pm, an hour and a half or so, on March 12th (Room 114), March, 19th, March 26th, April 2nd, and April 9th---all these sessions will be in Room 118 in the Finne-gan Center. This Justice series will also be offered on Thursday Mornings, an hour and a half or so, on March 7th, March 14th, March 21st, March 28th, and April 4th---all these sessions will be held in Room 118 in the Finnegan Center.

St. Casimir of Poland, 1458 – 1483 Feast Day: March 4th

Casimir was a Prince of Poland, born in the royal palace at Cracow on October 3, 1458. He was the grandson of Wladis-laus II Jagiello, King of Poland, who introduced Christianity into Lithuania, and the second son of King Casimir IV and Queen Elizabeth. The early training of the young prince was entrusted to Father Dlugosz, the Polish historian, a priest at Cracow, and later Archbishop of Lwów (Lemberg). Father Dlugosz was a deeply religious man, a loyal patriot, and well versed in statecraft. Casimir was placed in the care of this scholar at the age of nine, and even then he was remarkable for his ardent piety, he remained under Dlugosz’ tutelage until 1475. In 1479, his father, King Casimir IV went to Lithu-ania to spend five years arranging affairs there, and the young Casimir was placed in charge of Poland, and from 1481 to 1483 administered the State with great prudence and justice. Shortly afterwards he fell victim to a severe attack of lung trouble, which, weak as he was from fastings and mortifications, he could not withstand. While on a journey to Lithua-nia, he died at the court of Grodno, 4 March 1484. His remains were interred in the chapel of the Blessed Virgin in the cathedral of Vilna. St. Casimir was known for great piety, justice and chastity, an impeccable character and his great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. After his death he was venerated as a saint, because of the many miracles wrought by him. He was canonized by Pope Adrian VI, less than forty years after his death. His is patron of Poland and Lithuania.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP MARCH 12, 2019

St. Mary of Vernon’s Caregiver Support Group is designed to assist the

family members who provide care. Together we help find community resources, offer educational and spiritual support and a ‘listening ear’ in their Caregiver journey. This group is for general caregiving, not specific to a par-ticular health issue or age of care recipient. We meet the second Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the Rectory Meeting Room (lower level). Our gather ing this month is March 12. No pre-registration is required. Inquiries can be directed to Sr. Mary Barbara Hassler, Director of Ministry of Care, St. Mary of Vernon, at 847-362-1005 or Diane Cinnick, LCPC/CADC at 847-609-1826.

  • EXTRA COLLECTION FOR OUR SEMINARIAN MINISTRY

On the weekend of March 16/17 we will hold a second collection for our Seminarian Ministry (there is a special enve-lope in your packet). This collection is different from the annual Archdiocesan Seminary Collection that supports Uni-versity of St Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary. The donations we receive in next week’s collection will stay at the parish and be used to fund the outreach efforts of our parish’s Seminarian Ministry. Over the years we have shown our support to the seminarians through parties, congratulation cards, and welcome baskets for newly arrived international students. The Seminarians and the Seminary Faculty are so very grateful for the attention and support we give them. This ministry is very unique to St. Mary of Vernon—one of the special things we do well—and is highly recognized by the seminary community.

Last Christmas’ Ice Cream Social at the Seminary

The purpose of our Seminarians Ministry’s outreach efforts is to show support for the decision the men made when they entered the Seminary. Besides the men studying for the Archdiocese of Chicago, like Patrick Gorman, our parish’s own seminarian, several have traveled from their home country to study here and will return to be ordained for their own dio-cese, just like Sabelo Luthuli, who will return home to Eshowe, South Africa in May. Others are from neighboring states, studying for their home diocese, like Seth Lorenz, who is studying for Lubbock, Texas. These men will be our future priests. We hope you will be generous in next weekend’s collection so the ministry can continue to support the seminarians in their call to serve our Lord. If you would like more information about this ministry and ways you can show support for the Seminarians, contact Susan Gray at [email protected] or 847-362-1005.

SMV BOOK CLUB FRIDAY, MARCH 15 AT 11:00 A.M. IN PARISH CENTER ROOM 118

We will discuss The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey. Come join us for a dis-cussion of a new mystery unless you have given them up for Lent! “Massey...debuts a new series featuring a female lawyer in India. In partnership with her father, Perveen Mistry mainly processes paperwork, since in 1920s Bombay, women are dis-allowed from presenting in court. Her chance to meet actual clients finally arrives when she questions the disposition of an inheritance to three Muslim widows living in full purdah (seclusion), which prohibits their talking to men. Each widow has signed over her only ongo-ing source of income to charity. Perveen is determined to ask them why, and inadvertently sets off a chain of violence and recrimination. In addition to getting an unusual perspective on women’s rights and relationships, readers are treated to a full view of historical downtown Bombay—the shops and offices, the docks and old fort, and the huge variety of conveyances, characters, and religions—in an unforgettable olio that provides the perfect backdrop to the plot and subplots. Each of the many characters is uniquely described, flaws and all, which is the key to understanding their surprising roles in the well-constructed puzzle.” —Booklist

  • HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION LENTEN ALMSGIVING—2019

Our Catholic tradition encourages us to observe Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Almsgiving, is the act of helping the poor and performing acts of charity and mercy. The Human Concerns Commission is offering an opportunity for all parish-ioners to contribute to a specific charity over the six weeks of Lent. Each week a worthy charity will be highlighted. You can participate as often as you like by placing your do-nations in the blue box on the table in the center of the narthex. The six charities that were selected this year represent a cross section of needs in our local community, namely; support for mothers and children, and at risk children in our community and around the world. We hope that this opportunity to reach out to the poor and vulnerable and those in need will serve to bring you closer to the full observance of Lent.

Cash and checks made out to St. Mary of Vernon can be placed in the blue metal collection box.

LENTEN ALMSGIVING For Feed My Starving Children

    March 16/17, 2019

Feed My Starving Children is a Christian nonprofit organization based on the belief that Jesus Christ has called us to feed the hungry and serve those in need. They strive to follow his calling every day in all that they do.

Through God, FMSC strives to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in children throughout the world by helping to instill compassion in a generation that hears and responds to the cries of those in need until all are fed.

Feed My Starving Children partners with organizations around the world to reach God's neediest children. They donate meals to an exceptional network of missions and humanitarian organizations who work hard to get life-saving nutrition into the hands and tummies of those who need it most. By God’s grace more than 99% of FMSC meals have safely reached their intended destination. Every day they distribute FMSC food in schools, orphanages, medical clinics and feeding programs in 70 countries around the world to break the cycle of poverty.

Lent is about God’s infinite love for us and his great desire to bless us. It is a season of invitation from God in a deeply personal way. To fully accept God’s love requires not just intellectual knowledge, but a prayerful pondering. It is the perfect time to quiet ourselves and to seek ways to deepen our relationship with God. Come to the parish mission led by Monsignor Canary to reflect upon the deep divine love revealed in the Paschal mystery and hear the Lord call out, “Come back to me, with all of your heart.” (Joel 2:12). All are welcome!

  • The Unemployment Line Strategies for “Older” Job Seekers

Tell the truth -- and nothing but the truth -- in your resume In crime dramas, witnesses being sworn in are often instructed to “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” When it comes to your resume, telling the truth and nothing but the truth is critically important. For older workers, however, it may be preferable to omit the “whole truth” part of that oath.

Consider omitting the years of your graduation from high school, college, or graduate school and limiting your re-ported work experience and awards to those you’ve received in the past fifteen or so years. By doing so, you’re tell-ing the truth to your prospective employer and focusing on what are likely the most relevant parts of your work ex-perience, but you’re not directly revealing your age. You’ll still be seen as an experienced candidate, but you’ll re-duce the risk of being branded as “old” before you even start. The purpose of our Wellspring Employment Resource Community (WERC) ministry is to provide a safe and effec-tive forum for sharing work search tools and techniques which can enable unemployed, underemployed, and job-searching parishioners in their efforts to find meaningful and rewarding work. All are welcome – from recent graduates looking for that first job to the individual looking to make a change in their career or current role to the seasoned job hunter. Questions? Contact the WERC team at [email protected]. Upcoming “WERC” Events

Next Meeting: Monday, March 25th at 7:30 PM –WERC Support Group WERC members and guests will have the opportunity to meet to ask questions of our team and each other, network, share success stories and advice, and discuss some of the challenges of the job search. This meet-ing will take place in Rooms 110-112 of the Parish Center. All are welcome.

“Around the Corner…” St. Joseph Employment Ministry – next session: March 13, 2019 – Ask The Coach Where can you turn for answers to your job search questions? At our next meeting we will address your most press-ing questions, such as: What’s the most productive source of job leads in my field? How do I explain why I left my last position? How can I take advantage of social media to connect with potential employers? On March 13 we will hold an “Ask the Coach” Open Workshop to focus entirely on your questions and concerns. Meet and learn from career transition expert Dan Barber, along with your fellow job seekers.

Up next: March 27 Your Brand and Value Proposition

Meetings are held from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Formation Center (112 N Milwaukee, Libertyville 60048), Room C. Please enter from the rear of the building. All are welcome!
