Dear Parishioners,

I am giving my column space this week to Carol Frahm, who will be completing her service here at St. Mary on January 31st. Dear Good People of St. Mary:

My words today are two-fold: to thank you and to challenge you.

First, the thank you:

In five plus years I have asked many, many times through the bulletin, emails, phone calls and in-person chats for your help to meet a wide variety of parish needs. The responses were an overwhelming “Yes.” Thank you. Thank you for making my job easy. More importantly, thank you for stepping forward to serve.

Any time I turned up at a Catholic event in the Fox Cities, the people of Greenville were there … Divine Mercy Sunday … CIA/FMO presentations … the March for Life send-off Mass … daily masses at other parishes … citywide education events. It made me proud to work for you and to represent you. It inspires me. Thank you for your extraordinary example.

You opened a window to your lives for me. I have helped to facilitate celebrations -happy and sad. I have received your prayer intentions and linked you up to the pastor, the team member or parishioner who could support you. Thank you for allowing me to become part of your lives.

Now for the challenge:

In my website staff bio in August of 2013, I concluded by saying: “I am striving to grow stronger in my Catholic faith.” I didn’t know then what that would mean, but let me share some high points of the journey.

In the summer of 2014 I was invited to commit to a weekly holy hour. I accepted but was wholly uncertain that I could do it. As I started, I struggled. What should I do? How could I pray alone for a whole hour? How could I make time each Monday to do this? The first months were a challenge. The next July I could have bowed out, but I was hooked. The hour flies by now. In retirement, I am looking forward to spending more time before the Blessed Sacrament. If you think you can’t do it, please talk to me … you can … and you should. St. Mary makes it easy. Come Tuesdays or Thursdays (5 to 6), Wednesdays (9 to noon), Saturdays (after 2:30). Come before morning Masses and join Father Michael when he is here. Come anytime the church is open.

For a long time, I aspired to establish a relationship with a regular confessor. I have finally managed to do that, and it has made the Sacrament of Reconciliation more meaningful and more beneficial. Part of it was finding a convenient time and that turned out to be Saturday afternoon. I also strongly recommend a stop at St. Patrick’s to pick up some inexpensive booklets with examinations of conscience or surf the web and search some out.

I made a New Year’s resolution to take back Sunday as the Lord’s Day three years ago. This was hard. (This became a continuing resolution for the next year and the year after.) Re-training myself to plan household tasks and shopping and work outside of Sunday took time. As these tasks shifted, it opened up time for prayer and visits and service and reflection. I highly recommend taking back Sundays.

If those strategies aren’t for you, download the ibreviary app (Thanks, Fr. Michael. I might master liturgy of the hours because of this app.) and you can pray morning prayer, any of the daytime prayers and evening prayer anywhere you are.

On my journey, I have found much moral support by tuning in to Relevant Radio on the air or on-line. The witness of the priest contributors and the callers is outstanding reinforcement of the value of our Catholic faith.

Thank you for the inspiration to keep transforming myself as a disciple of Christ. It has been an honor to work on your behalf. You are in my prayers.

The tabernacle is the name given to the gold

box usually located at the front and center of

most Catholic Churches in the world. The

word 'tabernacle ' comes from Hebrew which

means ' a dwelling place' In the Old

Testament in Exodus, the second book of the

Bible, the word tabernacle was used in

reference to the ark of the covenant and later

to the tent in which the ark was kept. In a

more literal translation tabernacle meant to

pitch a tent with some one. It was someone

who went with you and stayed with you. The

tabernacle in every church has that same sort

of reference. Mary was considered a sort of

tabernacle as Jesus

mom. And in a real way

when we receive

communion we are

tabernacles of God in

the world when we

receive Communion and

go into the world after

Mass.

Weekly Stewardship Thought In today’s second reading , St. Paul tells the

Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are

from God and that they are given, not for

ourselves alone, but for the common good.

But the generosity of God knows no limits—the

miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we

faithfully do as God asks, He can change our

gifts of water into wine?

Day of Penance and Prayer January 22nd has been declared a day of PENANCE AND PRAYER to end abortion. All Catholics are called to make some act of

penance or prayer on January 22nd and to offer it up for an end to the great evil of abortion. Possible ideas: Skip a meal, offer a

rosary or even a decade of the Rosary, pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet, light a candle, pray in front of Planned Parenthood, or anything

else. Do something extra that day and offer it up to God to change the minds and hearts of lawmakers and those contemplating

abortion.
