Pastor’s Weekly Message
Word of Life
P. 2
Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 2018
Today is fifty days after Easter, the feast of Pentecost when we
Christians celebrate the coming down of the Holy Spirit on the
apostles, and the birth of the Church. After receiving the Holy
Spirit, the apostles began to speak with boldness the truth about
Jesus and shared the good news with all those they met.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they shared their gifts
with the community. The Spirit was a sign of unity and oneness
in the community. They all spoke a language that everyone
could understand. This language is love, the first fruit of the
Holy Spirit. Love is the greatest of the three things that lasts as
St. Paul says: “There are three things that last, faith, hope and
love, the greatest of this is love” (1Cor. 13:13).
In Genesis 11:1-9, we read about the story of “the tower of
Babel,” how humanity was united with one voice but decided to
do things apart from God. The plan was to build a city and a
tower that will exclude God. Their thoughts were: “Let us make
a name for ourselves.” They were going to build a paradise for
themselves but God was not going to be acknowledged. This
was a great mistake and misunderstanding of what paradise
really means. What is paradise without God? At the end, their
pride led to disunity which resulted into confusion and failure.
Through the Holy Spirit, God has united the human language
once again. The apostles spoke with one mind and one heart
after they received the Holy Spirit (Act 4:32). The Spirit of God
within them helped each one to appreciate the contribution of
the other. It was no longer about the interest of the individual
but rather that of God and the community. The human spirit
tends to yield to things of the flesh: selfishness, greed, lust,
impurity, drinking bouts, orgies and the like (Galatians 5:18-
20). However, the spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, prompts us to
make room for the Kingdom of God yielding love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, self-control (Galatians 5:22). St.
Paul says, “if we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the
Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). In following the Holy Spirit, we are
able to work with others to build up the kingdom of God on this
earth. May the Holy Spirit come into our hearts today and help
us to live our lives as ordinary people in extraordinary ways.
Amen.
MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH: Monday after
Pentecost is now declared the memorial of Mary, Mother of the
Church (Mater Ecclesiae). This day was recently added to the
liturgical calendar of the Church by Pope Francis. Tomorrow
will be the first time to celebrate this memorial even though the
litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary has included this title of Mary
as the Mother of the Church. It is fitting that this day comes
right after Pentecost when we celebrate the birth of the Church.
Mary was there on Pentecost day (Acts 1:14) not so much to
receive the Holy Spirit but to support the apostles in their new
mission. Mary already received the Holy Spirit during the
annunciation as the scriptures attest: “The Holy Spirit will come
upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you;
hence, the holy offspring to be born will be called Son of
God” (Luke 1:35). Just as mothers pray for their children, so it
is with Mary our Mother. She intercedes for us all as a church,
the body of Christ and also as individuals. May her prayers
guide the church as she strives to evangelize our world!
PRIESTS’ CONVOCATION: The priests of the archdiocese
will gather in Galveston from May 21-24 for their bi-annual
convocation. This is a time for prayer, fellowship and
communion among priests working in the archdiocese. The
theme of the convocation is “the spirit of the priesthood in the
wake of trauma: recovery, renewal, rebirth.” Due to the
convocation, there will be no Mass on Tuesday through
Thursday of this week (May 22, 23, and 24) neither will
there be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on those days.
Please keep Fr. Tony and I and all your priests in prayers during
these days. Pray also for more vocation to the priesthood.
EXHIBITION OF THE EUCHARISTIC MIRACLES: Bring
your families and friends to the exhibition of the Eucharistic
Miracles to be held in our parish next weekend. The exhibition
highlights the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
This is an important part of our Catholic faith. It will be held in
St. Mary’s Hall for our English speakers, and in St. Joseph’s
Hall for our Spanish speakers on Saturday, May 26th from Noon
to 9pm, and on Sunday, May 27th from 8:30am to 7:30pm. My
sincere gratitude to the Adoration Ministry for helping to
organize this exhibition.
CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION: Our parish will hold our 3rd
Annual Corpus Christi Procession after the 5pm Sunday Mass
on June 3rd, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. We will carry
Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament around our parish in public
veneration. Our children who received their First Communion
are invited to be part of the procession by wearing their First
Communion attires that day. These children will be throwing
flowers on the pathway in adoration of Jesus during the
procession. There will be a rehearsal for the children next
Sunday after the 11am Mass. I am grateful to Sr. Maria Makuo
Dunu, DDL for accepting to coordinate the children. We also
invite different prayer groups and organization in the parish to
join us for this solemn procession – our Knights of Columbus,
Catholic Daughters, ACTS group, Movimiento
Familiar Cristiana, Youth, Legion of Mary and
others. Let us all come out to proclaim that
Jesus is Lord!!

“Even among terminally ill patients, a request to die is nearly always a cry for help. … The patient requesting assisted suicide is
often asking, ‘Does anyone want me to be alive, or care enough to talk me out of this request and support me through this difficult
time?’”

“Summer Study” Program:
The “Summer Study” CCE intensive provides an
opportunity for students, grades Kinder through High
School, to complete an entire year of CCE in two short
weeks!
The program dates are Monday - Friday, June 18 - 22 and
June 25 - 29 from 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm.
We are still looking for about 10 adult or young adult
catechists to help us lead our grade-level classes. Free
training is provided in early June… you just need to be a
confirmed Catholic who loves their faith and likes kids!
Please contact Mike Smith for more details.
“Early Registration” for CCE:
This spring, we have had an overwhelming turnout at the
two “priority” registrations in April and May…
670 students were registered for CCE and sacraments (590
of them for the two-week summer program; last year
we had 485 students in “Summer Study”). The only
grade-levels still open for the two-week intensive are
Kindergarten and 1st grade… ALL OTHER GRADES
ARE NOW FULL, AND CLOSED!
If you are the parent / guardian of a student (entering
Kinder - 11th Grade) that would like to register for CCE
and / or Sacramental Preparation classes during the
2018 - 2019 catechetical year, please plan to attend either
our “priority” registration event on Saturday, June 2nd from
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm in the FLC, or the “regular”
CCE registration event on Saturday, August 18th from
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm in the FLC. We will not conduct
registrations in the Parish Office; parents MUST attend to
one of the registration events. Please bring a parish offering
envelope so we can verify your membership status.
“Late” registrations will be accepted beginning the week of
Sunday, September 30th during our regular CCE sessions.
Please note that space will be extremely limited at that
point, if we have any space at all. Absences will accrue for
student.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
As a policy, no one will ever be turned away due to an
inability to pay CCE tuition… however, those families
MUST speak with Fr. Felix PRIOR to the family registering
for Formation classes to get a waiver from him. You may
e-mail him at [email protected], or call 281-446-8211.
Again, full payment of CCE tuition is expected at the time
of registration. If you do not pay on the day of registration,
you will lose your spot in class.

Breaking Open the Word for Families for The Feast of Pentecost By Ginger Herrington Reading 1: Acts 2:1-11 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit. The promised gift of the Holy Spirit descended upon Mary and the Apostles after they obeyed Jesus, remaining in prayer for nine days. Catholics today who pray novenas are honoring this ancient tradition. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. Do you pray daily? Ask the Holy Spirit for His help in praying. He inspires our prayer and He prays for us even when we’ve lost the words to say.
Reading 2: First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 There are different kinds of gift but the same Spirit. St. Paul teaches us that we are all members of the mystical Body of Christ by virtue of our baptism. Every member of the Body is important, and each member contributes something. Thank the Lord for your gifts and talents and use them for the good of the community!
Gospel: John 20:19-23 Jesus said: “Peace be with you.” The apostles were locked in the Upper Room where Jesus celebrated the Last
Supper, but locked doors cannot keep Jesus out – only locked hearts. Open your heart to the Lord and receive His Spirit of peace. The
disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Do you rejoice when you see Him?
A great big THANK YOU to the catechists who volunteered their time to share their faith with our Elementary CCE students. We truly could NOT have done it without you! Your generous stewardship gift is deeply appreciated. May God bless you abundantly!

Pauli Murray, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Struggle for Social Justice. “A finalist for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, and longlisted for the National Book Award, The Firebrand and the First Lady is a riveting history, two decades in the making of how a brilliant writer-turned-activist and the first lady of the United States forged a special friendship that helped to alter the course of racism and race in America.” (Amazon.com). This excellent book will allow us to learn and discuss the teachings of Social Justice, in light of events in our time. Meeting Dates: 6/21, 7/12, 7/26, 8/2, 8/16. Mensaje del Párroco
P. 13
