From Father Mike’s Desk

On this Divine Mercy Sunday, we give thanks to our wondrous God that, while He loves justice, He loves mercy more. Imagine if it were otherwise! Of course, as we are reminded with every recitation of the Lord's Prayer, this mercy that we so cherish for ourselves must be generously provided to others as well. Extending mercy to our brothers and sisters is just another way of being Christ to those we meet today.

Tomorrow night (Monday, April 29, at 7:00 p.m.), Bishop Boyea will be at our parish for the Confirmation of our students, along with those of Saint Mary in Williamston and Saint Therese of Lisieux in Lansing. Please pray for our students, and those being confirmed with them. There are always some mistaken folk who see Confirmation as the end of Catholic formation, but we know that, instead, it is the doorway to full participation in the Church. These young people are now ready to step forward and fill such roles as Lector and Eucharistic Minister, and we look forward to welcoming them into these adult ministries.

Please pray also for the seventh and eighth graders who are leaving at the end of this week on a class trip to America's great city, Chicago. There is so much to see and do and learn there! Please ask the Lord to keep them safe and to open their minds and hearts to all that they will encounter during their days away.

Finally, it would be good to follow the request of Pope Francis and resume the venerable practice of saying the Saint Michael prayer at the conclusion of Mass. In a week or so, we'll start saying it after our daily Masses. You'll find it in the back of all the hymnals, though it is quickly learned by those who are new to this powerful request for intercession --

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

"Those who sincerely say ‘Jesus, I trust in You’

will find comfort in all their anxieties and fears …

There is nothing more man needs than Divine Mercy - that love which is benevolent, which is compassionate,

which raises man above his weakness to the infinite heights to the holiness of God."

Sister Anita’s Corner Second Sunday after Easter: Mercy flowing as we are formed into being Easter people. From the empty tomb - neither death nor life is found in the tomb -- to the encounters with a disciples who find her name being called … to freeing conversations with confused disciples … to each who had to hurry and tell of their real experience of being in the presence of the risen Jesus -– we are formed anew! Hearts are changed … lives are changed … souls are changed. Using the image of the new Easter fire, what if we put at Jesus’ disposal all our Lenten self-disciplines without trying to allow regret to have its way “it was so little”. All of our self-disciplines, combined to be set on fire as we place our offerings together within the Easter flame, change us as we go forward. Some of self-disciplines might now become continuously woven into our lives with our focus, choices and living: Be God’s light! A flame which grows as it is both provided a source to be its transforming energy and divided to be spread out is our symbol of Easter light; lighting up the darkness where fear and selfishness are being replaced with love and mercy.

“Peace be with you” is the greeting we are given rather than judgement or shame. We are asked why we are troubled? We are shown wounds that no longer hold pain and terror for Jesus, yet he is willing to hold our pain. We need to place our open hands into the hands of Jesus that were once so wounded. We have within us the power and the peace of the resurrection: Be God’s hope! Mercy flows from Christ’s wounds, not a tidy grace but a rich, unruly grace flowing out to us; touching our wounds as we then touch others. We have both been invited and directed to go out to others; to the wounded still present in the body of Christ: Be God’s Mercy! If you want to know me, says Christ, … as you are daily drawing close to me; as you are in this new time and space;

… as you are on a living journey because you have allowed your heart to be rent - broken-open … because of accepting grace connecting to grace - touch me; be touched by me. Receive my joy! Receive my peace! Grasp each other, that each of you might grow in your realization that it is I in whom we live and move and have our being. Be God’s peace!

God of extravagant, creative love, you are making us your own. Increase in us the grace flowing into our hearts and hands, voice, energy and hope to rightly live as resurrection people who know we must hurry to live and spread this Good News. Be God’s vision!

Intercessory Prayers: We Pray For All Who Are ...

We humbly offer these prayers in the name of Your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Please notify us if you have lost a loved one so that we can add their soul, and your family, to our Prayer list.

Faith Formation

“As the Family goes, so goes the Nation and the Whole World in which we live.” Saint John Paul the Great

We still have Eight Spots left for the Steubenville conference this summer from June 28 through 30! We will be taking a bus from Lansing Catholic with other youth groups to travel to the conference. Steubenville has been a major life changing moment for countless High School teens with over 25 conferences and 50,000 participants expected this year alone.

The theme is Belong: what it means to have authentic relationships beyond the isolation we feel when we don't have the necessary meaningful relationships. You can check out the official website for more information and to see the weekend’s awesome speakers and music, and to watch videos of past conference’s powerful speakers at https://bit.ly/2InPkea.

To reserve your spot: email, call, or stop by and talk to Jarrid!

Parish Pastoral Council Vacancies Are you interested in becoming more involved in Saint Martha Parish or do you know a fellow parishioner that would be? The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) will have two upcoming vacancies soon. Active, participating members of Saint Martha Parish are urged to prayerfully consider serving the parish in this volunteer role. One new member of the PPC would fill an open partial-term vacancy that expires in June 2021. The person filing this role would generally be asked to serve a second term of 3 years with a second term expiration of June 2024. The other new member of the PPC would fill an open full-term vacancy that would expire in June 2022, with an expected additional 3 year term to expire in 2025. The PPC meets bi-monthly for approximately 2 hours and advises the Pastor on items pertinent to the parish. This is an advisory committee. Persons considering this position should be collaborative, outgoing, and willing to engage their fellow members in productive conversation that will lead to a more Christ-centered community. The new members will be drawn by lot of all interested parties in keeping with Diocese of Lansing norms and the new member would be expected to attend the August 2019 meeting. Persons wishing to be considered for this role should contact Jim Collom at 517-381-1769 or [email protected] prior to Sunday, May 19.

New Procedure: The North Parking Lot will be Closed

from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm Monday through Friday.

No cars are allowed to be in the parking lot during that time. School students use that area during the day for a variety of activities. Anyone arriving during that time frame has to park in the south lot and walk a little way to the school entrance. This is for the safety of our students. After 3:15 pm, parents are again allowed and should park in the north lot to pick up their children. If you must use that parking lot, make arrangements with Don Morgan, Director of Operations.

THIS Tuesday, April 30

6:30 to 8:30 pm in our Conference Room Are you an adult experiencing grief and sadness following the death of someone close? If so, our Grief Ministry invites you to attend the 2nd of 5 evenings of healing, hope, and comfort. Our March topic is “The Journey of Grief”, facilitated by the Grief Ministry Leadership Team featuring a video, discussion, and fellowship. Questions? 517.449.3485 or [email protected]
