The Assumption of the Virgin Mary to Heaven

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church.

We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In the following centuries, the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However, by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names—Commemoration, Domitian, Passing, Assumption—from at least the fifth or sixth century.

Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God’s people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testaments, her Assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman’s victory.

Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul speaks of Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus’ life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to believe in Mary’s share in his glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven.

والتسبيح هلل دائما.Brothers and sisters,

Concerning spiritual gifts, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and

led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever

says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but

the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same

God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is

given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to

another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another

prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

Praise be to God always!

The evangelist writes,

They brought to Jesus a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak

and see. All the crowds were amazed and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” But when the Pharisees heard it, they said,

“It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons that this fellow casts out the demons.” He knew what they were thinking and

said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.

If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by

whom do your own exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out

demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property,

without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be plundered. Whoever is not with me is against me, and

whoever does not gather with me scatters. Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blas-

phemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever

speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

This is the truth! Peace be with you.

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary August 15

This feast commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into

Heaven, before her body could begin to decay—a foretaste of our own bodily

resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing

into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts .
