Farming and Faith—Hopefully you’ve been attentive to the intercessions each week when we “gather” for Mass. In addition to praying for the medical
folks and supply people, the sick and the hospitalized, we have been praying for all who are in danger of losing their livelihood and dignity due to crushing financial issues. Not only do we pray for shorter term solutions but also to learn and maybe reorganize our supply chains in the future. It is heartbreaking not being able to get livestock to market while there are shortages on shelves in other places. And stories and photos of milk being dumped while cheese is being trucked across country to be sold in Wisconsin. We pray the intercession of St. Isadore for guidance, protection and solid solutions in this time of crisis.
Join the Novena to St. Isidore, hosted by Catholic Rural Life. It is being held from Thursday, May 7, through Friday, May 15, the Feast of St. Isidore. Feel free to join now even if you missed the first couple of days. VIDEO ROSARY HOLY HOUR—In conjunction with the Rosary Warriors, each parish will host a Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Days for Rosary are: ○ Monday—Sacred Heart ○ Tuesday—Saint Patrick ○ Wednesday—Saint Mark ○ Thursday—Saint Mary ○ Friday—Saint Joseph See www.vibrantcatholic.com Our Sympathy and Prayers to~ w Julie and Rick Dengler on the death of
Julie’s mother, Jacqueline (Jackie) Reiter, who passed away on April 30, in Grundy Center, Iowa.
Radio Sponsorships—The Emmaus Pastorate broadcasts Mass on KOEL AM and KMCH FM each Sunday. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast in memory of or in honor of a loved one, please contact the Pastorate office (563-928-7200). Radio Mass time is 11:00 a.m. Stewardship—“Those who have faith in Me will do the works I do, and far greater than these,” Jesus tells His disciples. That’s quite an assignment for us as Christian stewards!
Salt for the Week “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?” These powerfully comforting words are often chosen as one of the readings for a funeral. Indeed, this personal approach
is very attractive… but there is something we might miss along the way.
As we heard in last week’s gospel about the sheep recognizing the voice of the shepherd, Christ certainly calls each of us and prepares a place for us—but that place is in communion with the Father and with other believers. We might get the impression that Jesus gets me my own cabin all to myself, and nothing could be farther from the truth. We must decide if we’re to be in the Father’s house in the first place! Our fundamental option in life is either “for” Christ or not. At times, faith has been presented in such a “me and Jesus” manner as to exclude the rest of those He came to save. There are many dwelling places in the Father’s house. This is about relationship, about community, ultimately it is the Body of Christ—for which there is never just “one” member.
Times such as these can cause us to go inward, take care of me and my concerns, and develop a very private, individualistic understanding of faith. Yet the first reading from Acts 6:1-7 demonstrates that what attracted people to the early Church was how they cared for the poor and vulnerable. The disciples were creating disciples by BEING disciples. What am I doing to build up the Body of Christ these days?
We are EASTER people and ALLELUIA is our song!
Points to Ponder… 1. Do I believe Jesus has prepared a place
for me? 2. What are ways in which I isolate and “go
inward”? 3. How do I look to Jesus as the “way, the
truth and the life?” 4. What current challenges are stressing me
and my faith? 5. How am I being called to grow out of
darkness into the wonderful light of Christ?

Faith vs. Fear—We are now experiencing the highest number of Covid-19 cases since it started in Iowa. The businesses are opening up and the trees and flowers are beginning to blossom. We are living
through an unusual time. Are you looking for something different to do?
Father John suggests that this is a good time to read the Book of Job. This book belongs in a grouping called wisdom literature. The Book of Job differs from other books of the Bible in its attention to daily struggles of ordinary human life. Life’s challenges give rise to reflection. Job is merely going on with his daily life when disaster overtakes him and these events lead him to reflect on his faith.
We will be offering a discussion group on the Book of Job starting Thursday, May 22, at 4:00 p.m. using Zoom. The class is one hour for three Thursdays. You will receive takeaways and discussion questions each week. You can put your supper in the oven and it will be ready when we finish at 5:00. Contact Fran Zichal to register (563-880-0873; [email protected])

May is the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The American bishops renewed the Consecration of the United States to Mary on May 1. During this month of May, we continue to pray to Mary to ask that she intercede with her Son for all those who are affected in any way by this pandemic. Special prayers for the month
of May are available on our website.
A Mother’s Day Prayer I thank you, Creator of us all,
for my mother. I thank you that she gave me life and
nurtured me all those years. She gave me my faith, helping me to
know you and to honor Jesus and His ways.
She taught me how to love and how to sacrifice for others.
She taught me that it was okay to cry and that I should always
tell the truth. Bless her with the graces she needs and
which you want to give her today. Help her to feel precious in your eyes
today and to know that I love her. Give her strength and courage,
compassion and peace. Bless her this day with your love.
Amen.
Mother’s Day Greetings to all Mothers of the Emmaus Pastorate from the Pastorate Knights of Columbus—Traditionally the Knights of Columbus Council #2209 at St. Joseph and Sacred Heart
Parishes have honored our mothers by giving each mother a flower after Mass on Mother ’s Day. Since our Mass is celebrated on-line with no congregation in Church due to the Coronavirus pandemic restrictions, we cannot honor this tradition this year. Be assured that the Knights of Columbus wish to remember and honor ALL mothers who are part of the Emmaus Pastorate and thank you for all you do supporting our Parishes.
